Chapter 14: The Price of the Truth

“Absolutely not.””

Rebecca's answer came before I had finished explaining Martin Vale's demand.

She stood beside the conference table, reading the message on my phone with a tight expression.

“We are not sending Eleanor anywhere. We are not meeting Vale without proper legal safeguards. And we are certainly not allowing him to dictate the terms.””

Eleanor sat beside me, pale but composed.

“He won't stop until he gets what he wants.””

“Then we make sure the evidence is protected,” Rebecca replied.

“And we let the appropriate authorities handle any threats or unlawful demands.””

I looked at the photograph of my father.

His letter had brought us this far. His records had helped expose the property scheme. But Daniel was still missing, and Martin Vale had made it clear that he intended to use him as leverage.

“I need to know whether Daniel is safe,” I said.

Rebecca nodded.

“We'll report him missing and provide the information we have. If Vale has made threats, we will preserve those communications and pass them to the authorities.””

Eleanor reached for my hand.

“I know where Daniel might have gone.””

Everyone turned toward her.

“Where?””

“An office building in Atlanta. Martin used to hold private meetings there when the clinic research program was being reviewed.””

Rebecca immediately wrote down the address.

“We can provide that information to the authorities. We won't go there ourselves.””

I hated waiting.

But I had learned what happened when people rushed into dangerous situations because they believed they could fix everything alone.

This time, I listened.

Within an hour, Rebecca had contacted the relevant authorities and provided the messages, the property documents, and the information about Daniel's disappearance.

Eleanor remained with us while her attorney arranged for the original consent agreement to be examined.

Then my phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered immediately.

“Where are you?””

His voice was faint and strained.

“Sarah, I'm sorry.””

“Are you safe?””

“Yes.””

“Where are you?””

“I can't tell you.””

“Daniel, people are looking for you. Your father is terrified. If Vale is threatening you, we can get help.””

He let out a bitter laugh.

“You still think everything can be fixed by telling the truth.””

“No. I think hiding it has made everything worse.””

He was silent.

Then he said, “Vale has the original laboratory records.””

“Not all of them.””

“What?””

“We have copies. Eleanor has her original consent agreement. Rebecca has the property documents.””

He exhaled shakily.

“Then you know.””

“I know enough to understand that you were prepared to trade my house and my medical privacy for the cancellation of your debt.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“By making decisions for me?””

“I thought I could settle everything before it hurt you.””

I closed my eyes.

“You keep confusing protection with control.””

He said nothing.

I continued.

“Daniel, I need you to come home safely. I need you to cooperate with the authorities and tell the truth about the transfer. I cannot promise to forgive you.

I cannot promise our marriage can be repaired. But you can still choose not to make things worse.””

His breathing became uneven.

“I don't know how to face you.””

“Then start by facing what you've done.””

A long silence followed.

Finally, he whispered, “I'm going to tell them everything.””

The call ended.

I immediately gave Rebecca the information.

She advised me not to contact him again unless instructed, and she passed the details to the authorities.

Hours later, Robert called.

“Daniel has been located,” he said.

I gripped the phone.

“Is he hurt?””

“He's physically safe. He's cooperating with the authorities.””

I closed my eyes in relief.

“What happens now?””

“He's agreed to provide records relating to the debt and the property agreement. He also says he has information about the clinic.””

I looked at Eleanor.

She nodded slowly.

“That's good,” I said.

Robert's voice broke.

“Sarah, I don't expect you to forgive my family. But I need you to know that I'm sorry.””

I swallowed.

“You didn't make Daniel's choices.””

“No. But I ignored signs that something was wrong. I thought he was stressed about money.

I thought Patricia was simply trying to keep the family together. I should have asked harder questions.””

“Then ask them now.””

He was silent for a moment.

“I will.””

The following morning, Rebecca arranged a formal meeting with Daniel's attorney and the investigators handling the matter.

Daniel appeared on a video call from a private room.

He looked exhausted. His shirt was wrinkled, and his eyes were red.

He didn't try to smile.

“I'll answer your questions,” he said.

Rebecca began with the property agreement.

Daniel admitted that he had signed documents promising to transfer the house into Carter Family Holdings. He also admitted that he had allowed others to use a copy of my signature without my authorization.

He claimed he had believed the transaction could be reversed before it was finalized.

Rebecca asked whether I had ever agreed to the transfer.

“No,” he said.

The word came out clearly.

I felt my shoulders loosen.

For once, he wasn't trying to make the truth sound more convenient.

Then she asked about the fertility treatment.

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“I knew the records were incomplete. I knew Sarah hadn't been given the full information about the embryo's origin. I told myself the clinic had handled the legal requirements, but I never verified that. I should have stopped the transfer until Sarah had been properly informed and had given whatever consent was required.””

“Did Sarah authorize the transfer through her father?””

“No. Her father had requested a review of the records. He did not authorize the procedure.””

I covered my mouth.

My father had tried to help.

Daniel continued.

“I also knew Eleanor was alive. I agreed to keep her location confidential, but I allowed Vale to use that secret to pressure me. I thought I could settle my debt and protect everyone. Instead, I made things worse.””

Rebecca asked about Vanessa.

Daniel admitted to the affair. He admitted that he had pressured Vanessa to remain silent about the clinic records. He also acknowledged that he had concealed financial information from me while moving money into Carter Family Holdings.

When the interview ended, I sat quietly for several minutes.

Eleanor looked at me.

“How do you feel?””

I considered the question.

“Angry.””

“That's understandable.””

“Exhausted.””

She nodded.

“And relieved that he finally told the truth?””

I looked at the screen where Daniel had appeared.

“Yes. But I don't trust him.””

“You don't have to.””

That simple sentence meant more to me than she could have known.

For years, I'd treated trust as something I owed the people I loved, even when their actions made it difficult to give.

Now I understood that trust had to be earned.

Later that afternoon, Rebecca called with an update.

The property transfer had been challenged, and the relevant authorities were examining the disputed signatures and financial records. The clinic had agreed to preserve its remaining files and cooperate with the review.

Martin Vale's company had been notified that the transaction was under legal dispute.

No one could promise an immediate resolution, but the transfer was no longer proceeding quietly behind my back.

Then Rebecca told me something else.

“Thomas Reed has been located. He's agreed to provide a statement about the laboratory records.””

I sat upright.

“What did he say?””

“He says the original records contain an entry that was removed from the electronic file. He believes it may help establish who authorized the disputed transfer.””

“Whose name is on it?””

“I'm waiting for the authenticated copy.””

I thanked her.

For the first time since the gender reveal, I allowed myself to imagine a future that wasn't controlled by Daniel's secrets.

I would protect my baby. I would fight to keep my father's house. I would let the lawyers and investigators do their work.

And I would decide what happened to my marriage in my own time.

That evening, Eleanor came to my house with a small envelope.

“I found this among the papers my father left me,” she said.

“It was addressed to you.””

I recognized my father's handwriting.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

Sarah, if the truth ever comes out, remember that you do not have to sacrifice your peace to preserve someone else's reputation.

I read it twice.

Then I held the letter against my chest and cried.

Not because I was broken.

Because, for the first time in days, I felt that someone had understood what I needed.

My phone rang.

Rebecca.

“I have the authenticated laboratory entry,” she said.

“Thomas Reed has confirmed that the original record was altered after the transfer.””

My heart began pounding.

“Who altered it?””

She paused.

“The entry identifies the person who requested the change.””

I gripped the phone.

“Who?””

Rebecca's voice lowered.

“Dr. Michael Bennett says the request came from Daniel's mother. But the original authorization bears another signature—someone who approved the transfer before Patricia ever became involved.””

“Whose?””

A long silence followed.

Then Rebecca said, “Your father's.””

I closed my eyes.

May you like

But before I could respond, she added one final sentence.

“Sarah, the investigators believe his signature may have been copied from an earlier document. They need to speak with you about what your father actually knew.””
