Chapter 7: The Voice on the Recording
The recording was only six minutes long.
But those six minutes changed everything.
Detective Harper played it inside the investigation room while Officer Ramirez, Mrs. Collins, and I sat around the table.
The audio began with the sound of a classroom door closing.
Then footsteps.
A woman's voice followed.
Mrs. Parker.
"I told you this was becoming a problem.""
A man's voice answered.
"Then fix it.""
My body stiffened.
I didn't recognize the voice.
But I could hear something in his tone.
Cold.
Calm.
Like he was used to getting what he wanted.
Mrs. Parker sounded nervous.
"The father showed up early. He saw everything.""
The man sighed.
"Did he see the camera?""
"Yes.""
A pause.
Then the man spoke again.
"Then the footage cannot exist.""
I looked at Detective Harper.
She didn't react.
She was listening carefully.
Mrs. Parker continued.
"She is just a child. Why are we still worried about her?""
The man's voice became quieter.
"Because children talk.""
I felt my hands tighten.
Detective Harper stopped the recording.
Everyone sat silently.
"Who is that?"" I asked.
Mrs. Collins looked terrified.
"I don't know.""
I turned toward her.
"You recorded this.""
She nodded.
"I found the device hidden behind a cabinet in the office.""
"Why didn't you report it immediately?""
She looked down.
"Because I wanted proof.""
I almost couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"You had proof of someone planning to hide evidence.""
"I know.""
"And you still waited.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I was wrong.""
Detective Harper leaned forward.
"Mrs. Collins, this recording suggests Mrs. Parker wasn't acting alone.""
She nodded.
"I believe so.""
Officer Ramirez replayed the last few seconds.
The man's voice came through again.
"Remember why we chose that classroom.""
The audio ended.
Detective Harper looked at me.
"Did that mean anything to you?""
I shook my head.
"No.""
But deep inside, something felt wrong.
Why Sophie?
Why my daughter?
That afternoon, I picked Sophie up from my sister's house.
She ran to me like she always did.
But when she hugged me, I noticed something.
She looked over my shoulder.
Like she was checking if someone was watching.
"Sophie?""
She looked up.
"Yes, Daddy?""
"Did someone tell you to look out for someone?""
Her face changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
Fear.
"Sweetheart?""
She looked down.
"Mrs. Parker said grown-ups sometimes pretend to be nice.""
My stomach tightened.
"What else did she say?""
Sophie whispered:
"She said my daddy wasn't supposed to find out.""
I knelt down.
"Find out what?""
She hesitated.
Then reached into her backpack.
"I found this.""
She pulled out a small folded paper.
My heart started racing.
I opened it.
It was a drawing.
At first, it looked like a normal child's picture.
A house.
A family.
A classroom.
Then I noticed something strange.
In the corner, Sophie had drawn a man standing outside the classroom window.
A man wearing a dark coat.
I looked at her.
"Who is this?""
She swallowed.
"I don't know.""
"Have you seen him before?""
She nodded slowly.
"Once.""
"When?""
"The day Mommy's picture disappeared.""
The room went silent.
My chest tightened.
Sophie's mother, Emily, had died three years earlier.
It was an accident.
A painful memory we rarely discussed.
But now my five-year-old daughter was connecting something I didn't understand.
"What picture?""
Sophie looked confused.
"The picture in Daddy's office.""
I stared at her.
"What about it?""
She whispered:
"Mrs. Parker asked me about Mommy.""
A cold feeling moved through my body.
"She asked you what?""
Sophie grabbed my hand.
"She asked if Mommy left anything for me.""
I stood completely still.
Because that question made no sense.
Unless someone knew something I didn't.
That night, Detective Harper returned to my house.
When I showed her Sophie's drawing, her expression changed.
"Have you ever seen this man?""
"No.""
She studied the drawing.
Then looked at me.
"Mr. Bennett, there is something you need to know.""
"What?""
"We found another file connected to Mrs. Parker.""
I waited.
"It involves your wife.""
My heart stopped.
"My wife?""
Detective Harper nodded.
"Emily Bennett was mentioned in an old investigation.""
I felt the room spinning.
"Why?""
She placed a folder on the table.
"I don't know yet.""
Then she said the words that made my blood run cold.
May you like
"But whatever Mrs. Parker was searching for...""
"Your daughter may be the reason she never found it.""
