Chapter 12: Emily's Final Message
Nobody moved after the video ended.
The silence was unbearable.
Michael stood frozen.
Detective Harper watched him carefully.
I watched him too.
Waiting.
Hoping.
That somehow there was another explanation.
But deep inside, I knew.
Something had been broken.
Something that couldn't easily be repaired.
Detective Harper played the video again.
This time, we listened carefully.
Emily appeared inside her office.
She looked exhausted.
But determined.
"Daniel, if you're seeing this, I need you to know something.""
She looked directly into the camera.
"I tried to tell you.""
My chest tightened.
"I tried because Sophie deserves the truth.""
The video shook slightly.
Emily continued.
"Someone has been changing records at Bright Steps. They are hiding what happens there.""
She paused.
"But the daycare is only part of it.""
Detective Harper leaned closer.
Emily looked nervous.
"The person behind this has access to information about families. Private information.""
Then came the sentence that made me look at Michael.
"I trusted my own brother.""
Michael lowered his head.
I felt something inside me collapse.
Emily continued.
"Michael, if you ever watch this, I hope you understand why I did what I did.""
My eyes moved toward him.
He was crying.
Actually crying.
"I loved you. But I couldn't ignore what I found.""
The video stopped suddenly.
Detective Harper checked the file.
"That's all.""
I looked at Michael.
"You knew.""
He wiped his face.
"I didn't want it to happen.""
"That isn't an answer.""
He looked broken.
"I got involved because I thought I could fix it.""
"Fix what?""
He sat down.
"The company.""
I frowned.
"What company?""
Michael looked at me.
"The organization that owns several private childcare centers.""
My blood ran cold.
"Bright Steps.""
He nodded.
"I helped create the system.""
I stared.
"Why?""
"At first, it was supposed to improve safety records.""
"And then?""
His voice became quiet.
"People started using it differently.""
Detective Harper asked:
"Who?""
Michael hesitated.
Then said:
"Thomas Reed.""
I looked confused.
"What?""
Michael continued.
"Thomas was the one who turned it into something else.""
Detective Harper immediately focused.
"Explain.""
Michael looked at me.
"I tried to stop him.""
I shook my head.
"But Emily found out.""
He nodded.
"She found documents. She was going to expose everything.""
My voice became low.
"And then she died.""
Michael closed his eyes.
"I know.""
The room went silent.
Detective Harper stepped closer.
"Are you saying Emily's death wasn't an accident?""
Michael didn't answer.
That answer was enough.
I felt sick.
Three years.
Three years believing I lost my wife because of a tragic accident.
Three years raising Sophie alone.
Three years without knowing someone had been hiding the truth.
Then Michael said something that changed everything.
"Daniel...""
I looked at him.
"There is one more thing.""
"What?""
"Emily wasn't the only person who discovered the truth.""
My heart started racing.
"Who else?""
Michael looked toward the stairs.
Toward Sophie's room.
"Your daughter.""
I felt frozen.
"What are you talking about?""
Michael whispered:
"Before Emily died, she hid something.""
"Where?""
He looked at me.
"Somewhere only Sophie would know.""
I shook my head.
"Sophie was two years old.""
Michael nodded.
"I know.""
Then he said:
"But Emily knew someone would eventually come looking.""
My phone suddenly buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
You found Emily's message. Now find what she left your daughter.
And beneath the message was a photograph.
A photograph of Sophie.
