Chapter 11: The Family Betrayal

I left the interview room feeling like the ground beneath me had disappeared.

Michael.

My wife's brother.

The man who stood beside me at Emily's funeral.

The man who held Sophie and promised her that he would always be there.

I couldn't make my mind accept it.

"There's no way.""

Detective Harper walked beside me.

"We still need evidence.""

I looked at her.

"But you believe it.""

She didn't answer immediately.

That was enough.

That evening, I called Michael.

He answered on the third ring.

"Daniel? Everything okay?""

His voice sounded normal.

Too normal.

I stared out my window.

"Where were you three years ago?""

Silence.

A small pause.

Then:

"What kind of question is that?""

"The week before Emily died.""

Another pause.

"I don't remember.""

My stomach tightened.

"You don't remember?""

"Daniel, what's going on?""

I almost laughed.

He was pretending.

"Did you ever go to Bright Steps?""

The silence lasted longer this time.

Then he said:

"Who told you that?""

My heart sank.

Because he didn't ask why I was asking.

He asked who told me.

I ended the call.

Ten minutes later, Michael arrived at my house.

He walked inside angry.

"What is this about?""

I stood across from him.

"You lied to me.""

His face changed.

"About what?""

"Bright Steps.""

He looked away.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

"You need to listen to me.""

"No.""

My voice shook.

"My daughter was hurt because of something connected to you.""

His expression softened.

"Daniel, I would never hurt Sophie.""

"Then explain.""

He said nothing.

"Explain why your name is connected to Mrs. Parker.""

His jaw tightened.

"Where did you hear that?""

"Answer me.""

He sat down.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

"I was trying to help Emily.""

"By hiding things?""

"No.""

"By letting her die?""

His face changed.

The pain was real.

But so was my anger.

"Daniel...""

"Get out.""

He stood.

"You don't understand.""

"Then make me understand.""

He looked toward the stairs.

Toward Sophie's room.

Then whispered:

"Emily wasn't investigating the daycare.""

I froze.

"What?""

"She was investigating me.""

The room went silent.

I felt like I couldn't breathe.

"Why?""

Michael closed his eyes.

"Because she found out I was involved.""

My hands shook.

"Involved in what?""

Before he could answer, there was a knock at the door.

Detective Harper.

She entered quickly.

"Daniel, we need to talk.""

She looked at Michael.

Then back at me.

"We found something.""

"What?""

She held up an evidence bag.

Inside was a small memory card.

"We found this hidden inside Emily's old car.""

My heart stopped.

"Her car?""

Detective Harper nodded.

"It was never recovered as part of the original investigation.""

I looked at Michael.

He looked terrified.

Detective Harper continued:

"We reviewed the contents.""

She paused.

"There is a video.""

I swallowed.

"Of what?""

She looked at Michael.

"Your wife's final conversation.""

Michael stepped backward.

"No.""

Detective Harper turned toward him.

"Yes.""

The room became silent.

Then she pressed play.

Emily's voice filled the room.

"If you're watching this, it means I was right.""

I felt tears in my eyes.

Her voice continued.

"Someone in my family is hiding the truth.""

Michael closed his eyes.

May you like

And then Emily said the words that destroyed everything.

"The person I trusted most is the person who betrayed me.""
