Chapter 6: The Woman Behind the Door
The next morning, Bright Steps Academy was closed.
Parents gathered outside the entrance, demanding answers.
Some were crying.
Some were angry.
Some were holding their children tightly.
I stood across the street watching.
Because I knew something they didn't.
This wasn't just about Mrs. Parker anymore.
The director who had promised safety had been hiding the truth.
When Detective Harper called me into the office, Mrs. Collins was already there.
She looked different.
Broken.
Not powerful.
Not in control.
She avoided looking at me.
"You knew," I said.
Her eyes closed.
"I knew something was wrong.""
"No.""
I stepped closer.
"You knew enough to stop it.""
She looked like she wanted to argue.
But she couldn't.
Officer Ramirez placed a folder on the table.
"We found your login information on the camera system.""
Mrs. Collins nodded.
"I deleted the footage.""
My fists tightened.
"Why?""
She looked at me.
"Because I was trying to protect the daycare.""
I stared at her.
"You protected a teacher who hurt children.""
Tears rolled down her face.
"I know.""
For the first time, she didn't make excuses.
She admitted it.
And somehow that made it worse.
"How long?""
She looked down.
"Eight months.""
The room became silent.
Eight months.
Eight months of parents trusting this place.
Eight months of children walking through those doors.
Eight months of someone choosing fear over protection.
Detective Harper asked:
"Why did Mrs. Parker have so much control over you?""
Mrs. Collins hesitated.
Then she reached into her bag.
She pulled out a flash drive.
"I kept copies.""
Officer Ramirez looked surprised.
"Copies of what?""
"Everything.""
She placed it on the table.
"Emails. Messages. Videos she sent me.""
My eyes narrowed.
"You had evidence and did nothing?""
Mrs. Collins looked away.
"I was scared.""
Detective Harper picked up the drive.
"We'll examine this.""
Before anyone could say more, Mrs. Collins suddenly looked at me.
"There is something you need to know about Sophie.""
My entire body tensed.
"What?""
She swallowed.
"Mrs. Parker wasn't interested in Sophie because of her behavior.""
"Then why?""
Mrs. Collins looked toward the door.
Like she was afraid someone might hear.
"Because of something she saw.""
I frowned.
"Sophie is five.""
"I know.""
"She doesn't know anything.""
Mrs. Collins shook her head.
"Children notice more than adults think.""
My heart started beating faster.
"What did she see?""
Mrs. Collins whispered:
"The night before you arrived...""
She stopped.
I waited.
"What happened?""
Her face turned pale.
"Mrs. Parker was in the classroom after hours.""
I stared at her.
"Doing what?""
Mrs. Collins looked at the floor.
"Looking through old student records.""
"Why?""
She hesitated.
Then said:
"Because she was searching for one specific child's file.""
I felt a chill.
"Whose?""
Mrs. Collins looked directly at me.
"Sophie's.""
And before I could ask why, Detective Harper's phone rang.
She answered.
Her expression changed immediately.
"What?""
A pause.
Then she looked at me.
"Mr. Bennett...""
I stood.
"What happened?""
She slowly lowered the phone.
"The flash drive wasn't the only thing Mrs. Collins kept.""
My heart raced.
"What else?""
Detective Harper's voice became quiet.
"She found a hidden recording.""
I stepped closer.
"Of what?""
She looked at me.
"A conversation between Mrs. Parker and someone else.""
"Who?""
Detective Harper hesitated.
May you like
Then said:
"The person she was really working for.""
