Chapter 5: The Child Who Remembered

I drove to my sister's house faster than I should have.

Every red light felt like an obstacle.

Every second felt dangerous.

When I arrived, Sophie was sitting on the couch holding a piece of paper.

She looked relieved when she saw me.

"Daddy.""

I rushed over.

"I'm here.""

She handed me the note.

The handwriting was small.

Careful.

Almost like an adult had forced a child to write it.

But the words weren't from Sophie.

They were meant for her.

If you tell anyone what happens in class, people will be upset with you.

My jaw tightened.

Someone had been manipulating my daughter.

I looked at Sophie.

"Sweetheart, did Mrs. Parker give you this?""

She looked down.

"Not exactly.""

"What do you mean?""

She twisted her fingers.

"She told me to keep secrets.""

My chest tightened.

"What kind of secrets?""

Sophie looked nervous.

"She said secrets make people special.""

I sat beside her.

"Did she ever hurt other children?""

Sophie became quiet.

Then she whispered:

"Sometimes.""

My entire body went still.

"Sometimes?""

She nodded.

"She made Noah cry.""

"Who is Noah?""

"A boy in my class.""

"What happened?""

Sophie looked toward the floor.

"Mrs. Parker said he was slow.""

I felt anger rising.

"What else?""

"She made him sit by himself.""

"For how long?""

"I don't know.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Daddy, I didn't tell because I thought she would get mad at me.""

I pulled her close.

"You should never be scared to tell me anything.""

That evening, Officer Ramirez came to my house.

He brought another investigator.

A woman named Detective Harper.

She listened carefully as Sophie explained what she remembered.

She never interrupted.

She never rushed her.

When Sophie finished, Detective Harper smiled gently.

"You did the right thing by telling us.""

Sophie looked at her.

"Will Mrs. Parker be angry?""

Detective Harper shook her head.

"No, sweetheart. Adults are responsible for their own choices.""

After Sophie went upstairs, Detective Harper opened her notebook.

"We found something else.""

I looked up.

"What?""

She placed a photograph on the table.

It was from inside the daycare.

A storage room.

Inside were several boxes.

Each box had a child's name written on it.

My stomach turned.

"Why are children's names on those?""

"We don't know yet.""

Officer Ramirez added:

"But we found handwritten notes inside.""

"From Mrs. Parker?""

"Some.""

He paused.

"Some were from other people.""

I looked at him.

"Other people?""

Detective Harper nodded.

"That's why we need to investigate further.""

She opened a folder.

"There may have been someone helping her monitor certain children.""

The words felt impossible.

"Monitor?""

She looked serious.

"Tracking behavior. Recording incidents. Keeping private notes.""

I stood.

"Why would someone do that?""

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

Then Detective Harper pulled out another document.

"We found one more thing.""

She placed it in front of me.

It was a staff schedule.

My eyes moved down the page.

Then stopped.

One name was highlighted.

A staff member who had access to the classroom cameras.

A staff member who had helped Mrs. Parker delete footage.

I looked at the name.

And my blood ran cold.

Because I recognized it.

It wasn't a stranger.

It was someone who had looked me directly in the eyes yesterday.

Someone who had pretended to help.

Someone who had told me she was on my side.

Detective Harper watched my reaction.

"You know this person?""

I slowly nodded.

"Yes.""

"Who is it?""

I looked at the name again.

May you like

Then whispered:

"Mrs. Collins.""
