Chapter 14: The Truth Emily Protected
The name on the screen changed everything.
Not because I understood it.
But because Detective Harper did.
She stared at the laptop like she had seen a ghost.
"Who is it?""
She didn't answer immediately.
"Detective?""
She finally looked up.
"The person listed here is someone who shouldn't be connected.""
"Meaning?""
"Meaning this person had authority over the entire investigation.""
My stomach dropped.
"Someone in law enforcement?""
She nodded.
I felt anger rising.
"So the people who were supposed to find the truth helped hide it?""
"We don't know that yet.""
"But you recognize the name.""
She looked away.
That was enough.
Officer Ramirez stepped closer.
"Harper.""
She sighed.
"The name belongs to Deputy Chief Alan Whitmore.""
The room went silent.
I knew the name.
Everyone in Dallas knew the name.
A respected official.
Someone who appeared on television whenever there was a major case.
Someone people trusted.
Detective Harper immediately called her department.
But before she could finish, another notification appeared on my phone.
Unknown number.
A message.
Stop searching.
Then another.
You don't understand what Emily sacrificed.
I stared at it.
Then came one more.
Ask Michael what he promised her.
I slowly looked at Michael.
His face changed.
"You know something.""
He didn't answer.
"Michael.""
He sat down.
"I made a promise.""
My voice became cold.
"To who?""
"Emily.""
"What promise?""
He looked at me.
"That I would protect Sophie if anything happened.""
I shook my head.
"You didn't protect her.""
"I tried.""
"You lied.""
His eyes filled with tears.
"I was trying to keep her alive.""
The room went silent.
"What does that mean?""
Michael looked at the floor.
"Emily knew she was in danger.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"She knew?""
He nodded.
"She asked me to make sure Sophie never learned the truth until she was old enough.""
I stared.
"Then why didn't you tell me?""
"Because Emily believed you would go after the people responsible.""
"And?""
He looked at me.
"She was right.""
I didn't know whether to be angry or relieved.
Maybe both.
Then Detective Harper's phone rang.
She answered.
Her expression changed.
"What happened?""
She listened.
Then looked at me.
"They found Thomas Reed.""
I stood.
"Where?""
"At his office.""
"Is he arrested?""
She hesitated.
"No.""
My eyebrows tightened.
"Why?""
"Because he was found unconscious.""
The room went quiet.
"Is he alive?""
"Yes.""
"What happened?""
Detective Harper looked at Michael.
Then at me.
"Someone tried to silence him.""
The meaning was clear.
Whoever was behind this was getting desperate.
That evening, Thomas Reed woke up under police protection.
I met him in the hospital room.
He looked exhausted.
But alive.
When he saw me, he whispered:
"Emily was right.""
I stepped closer.
"About what?""
He looked toward the door.
Then lowered his voice.
"The person controlling everything doesn't want money.""
"Then what?""
He looked at me.
"Control.""
I waited.
Thomas swallowed.
"They collect information about families. Secrets. Weaknesses.""
My stomach turned.
"And Sophie?""
His eyes filled with regret.
"Your daughter was never the target.""
I frowned.
"Then why?""
Thomas looked at me.
"Because Emily hid the evidence somewhere nobody would search.""
I looked confused.
"Where?""
Thomas whispered:
"Inside the only person she knew everyone would protect.""
My heart stopped.
"Sophie.""
He nodded.
"But there's one problem.""
"What?""
Thomas looked terrified.
"The person behind this knows that now.""
At that exact moment, my phone rang.
I answered.
No one spoke.
Then I heard a child's voice.
"Sophie?""
My blood froze.
It was my daughter's voice.
May you like
But she wasn't calling me.
The person on the other end had her.
