Chapter 9: The Son Nobody Knew About
I read the letter three times.
The words stayed the same.
*The truth about your birth.*
My entire life suddenly felt like a story someone else had written.
I looked at my father.
“Explain.””
He sat down on the basement floor.
For the first time, he looked like the man I remembered from childhood.
Not a chairman.
Not a businessman.
Just my dad.
“There are things I never wanted you to carry.””
I knelt in front of him.
“Dad, I need to know.””
He looked at the letter.
“Your grandfather wasn’t just my father.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“He adopted me.””
The room went silent.
I felt like the air disappeared.
“What?””
My father nodded.
“I was born Daniel Carter.””
I stared at him.
“Then why Henderson?””
“Because your grandfather gave me his name.””
I looked at the letter again.
“So Richard knew?””
My father nodded.
“Richard always believed I had no right to the company because I wasn’t his blood.””
“That’s insane.””
My father looked at me.
“To him, family was about inheritance.””
“And to you?””
He smiled sadly.
“Family is about who stays.””
That sounded exactly like him.
I looked at Fiona.
She was standing near the stairs, listening quietly.
Even she looked shocked.
“My parents knew all this?””
My father nodded.
“Richard found out years ago.””
Fiona covered her mouth.
“That’s why he hated you.””
“Yes.””
My father looked at the letter.
“He believed adoption made me less of a son.””
I felt anger rising.
“That’s why he tried to destroy you?””
“He believed he was correcting an injustice.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My father looked at me.
“He was trying to steal what he could never build.””
The next day, Marcus arranged a meeting with the company board.
We entered the room together.
This time, my father wasn’t walking in alone.
The executives looked nervous.
The news had already spread.
But before anyone could speak, the doors opened.
Richard Whitmore walked in.
He looked confident.
Too confident.
“Daniel.””
My father stared at him.
“Richard.””
Richard smiled.
“I’m surprised you’re still pretending.””
I stepped forward.
“You mean pretending to be the man who built the company?””
Richard looked at me.
“You don’t understand what’s happening.””
“I understand enough.””
He laughed.
“Your father has spent your whole life lying to you.””
My father didn’t react.
Richard placed a folder on the table.
“This proves everything.””
Marcus picked it up.
I watched his face change.
“What is it?””
Marcus looked at my father.
“A genetic report.””
My heart stopped.
Richard smiled.
“The company belongs to the Henderson bloodline.””
He looked at my father.
“And he isn’t one.””
The room became silent.
Richard turned to me.
“Your father stole a legacy that never belonged to him.””
I looked at my father.
Waiting.
Not for an answer.
For him to trust me.
My father simply said:
“Ethan.””
I nodded.
“I know who you are.””
Richard’s smile faded.
“What?””
I stepped toward him.
“You think blood created my family?””
I looked at my father.
“The man who raised me is my father.””
For the first time, Richard looked uncertain.
Then the boardroom doors opened.
A woman walked in carrying a briefcase.
Everyone turned.
Marcus looked surprised.
“Who is that?””
The woman approached the table.
“My name is Clara Henderson.””
My father froze.
Impossible.
I looked at him.
“Dad?””
His face had lost all color.
Because he recognized her.
And she was holding something that could destroy Richard Whitmore forever.
She placed the briefcase on the table.
Then she said:
“Daniel, it’s time you learned why your father chose you.””
She opened the case.
Inside was a document signed twenty-five years ago.
And at the bottom was a name.
The person who had secretly controlled everything from the beginning.
May you like
*Thomas Whitmore.*
Richard’s own father.
