Chapter 11: The Secret About My Mother
My father didn’t speak.
Not a word.
Not an explanation.
Nothing.
And that scared me more than any accusation ever could.
“Dad.””
He looked away.
I had seen him face powerful men.
I had seen him lose everything and rebuild.
But this was different.
This wasn’t business.
This was personal.
“Who sent that?”” he whispered.
“I don’t know.””
His eyes stayed on the message.
Then he slowly sat down.
The boardroom around us faded.
The executives.
The documents.
Richard.
Everything disappeared.
There was only my father.
And the secret he had carried.
“What happened to Mom?””
His hands tightened.
“Ethan…”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“I deserve to know.””
He closed his eyes.
“I wanted to protect you.””
“That’s what you always say.””
The words came out harsher than I intended.
But they were true.
“You protected me from Richard.””
“You protected me from the company.””
“You protected me from everything.””
I looked at him.
“But who protected me from the truth?””
My father looked like I had hurt him.
Maybe I had.
But I was hurt too.
Finally, he spoke.
“Your mother didn’t die in an accident.””
The room went completely silent.
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
My father looked down.
“She was investigating Richard.””
My heart started pounding.
“No.””
“She discovered financial records.””
“Dad…”
“She found proof that Richard had been stealing from multiple companies.””
I shook my head.
“But the accident…”
My father’s voice became quiet.
“It happened the night she was supposed to give those records to authorities.””
I felt sick.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you tell me it was an accident?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Because you were six years old.””
I looked away.
“I was your son.””
“I know.””
“Then why didn’t you trust me with the truth?””
He whispered:
“Because I had already lost her.””
That stopped me.
My father wiped his eyes.
“And I couldn’t lose you too.””
For a moment, my anger disappeared.
Not completely.
But enough to see the pain behind his silence.
Clara stepped closer.
“Daniel.””
My father looked at her.
“Did you know?””
She nodded slowly.
“I helped your wife investigate.””
I turned.
“You knew my mother?””
“Yes.””
Clara opened her briefcase again.
She removed a small envelope.
“This was your mother’s.””
My hands shook as I took it.
My name was written on the front.
*Ethan.*
I stared at it.
“She wrote this?””
Clara nodded.
“She wanted you to have it when you were old enough.””
I opened it.
Inside was a single page.
My mother’s handwriting.
My eyes blurred as I read.
Ethan, if you are reading this, your father kept his promise.
He protected you.
But one day, you may need to know why.
I swallowed.
The letter explained everything.
My mother had discovered Richard’s crimes.
She also discovered something else.
Something about the Whitmore family.
Something nobody knew.
A hidden partnership.
A secret agreement.
A betrayal that went beyond money.
At the bottom of the letter was one final sentence.
Trust your father. He is the only person who chose you when he had nothing to gain.
I couldn’t hold back anymore.
I looked at my father.
“I’m sorry.””
He stood.
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I’m the one who should apologize.””
We hugged.
Not like a father and son trying to fix a problem.
Like two people who had both been carrying pain alone.
Then Marcus rushed back into the room.
“Mr. Henderson.””
We turned.
His face was serious.
“What now?”” my father asked.
Marcus held up a folder.
“We found Richard’s final move.””
I frowned.
“Final move?””
Marcus nodded.
“He wasn’t trying to take the company.””
My father looked confused.
“Then what was he trying to do?””
Marcus placed the folder down.
“He was trying to erase the Henderson name completely.””
I opened it.
Inside was a legal document.
A transfer agreement.
And at the bottom…
May you like
was my signature.
Except I had never signed it.
