Chapter 10: The Legacy No One Expected
The name on the document changed everything.
*Thomas Whitmore.*
Richard’s father.
The man who had built the Whitmore family fortune.
The man everyone believed had been the rightful owner of every opportunity that came after.
Richard stared at the document like it was a ghost.
“That’s impossible.””
Clara Henderson looked at him calmly.
“No, Richard. What’s impossible is that you thought the truth would stay buried forever.””
Nobody moved.
The board members looked between Clara, my father, and Richard.
I watched Richard’s confidence disappear piece by piece.
A man who had spent his entire life controlling the room was suddenly standing in a room he couldn’t control.
My father looked at Clara.
“Where did you get this?””
Her expression softened.
“From your father.””
My father’s face changed.
“My father?””
She nodded.
“Before he died.””
I looked at my father.
“You knew her?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
Clara smiled sadly.
“That’s because Thomas made sure nobody knew.””
She placed another document on the table.
“My father was Thomas Whitmore’s personal attorney.””
Richard stepped forward.
“Lies.””
Clara didn’t even look at him.
“He hired me to handle his private affairs. Not his company affairs.””
She opened the folder.
“Because he didn’t trust his own son.””
The room went silent.
Richard’s face turned red.
“You’re talking about my father.””
“Yes,” Clara said.
“The man who discovered you had been stealing from his own company.””
Richard laughed.
“You expect people to believe that?””
Clara looked at my father.
“I expect Daniel to believe it.””
My father stared at the documents.
“Why didn’t he tell me?””
“Because he was afraid.””
My father frowned.
“Of Richard?””
Clara shook her head.
“Of what Richard would become.””
The words hung in the air.
She continued.
“Thomas knew Richard was obsessed with power. He knew he measured people by what they could give him.””
I thought about Beverly calling my father trash.
The wedding.
The humiliation.
Everything suddenly connected.
Clara pointed at the papers.
“This agreement proves that Thomas Whitmore transferred controlling authority of several assets to Daniel’s father before his death.””
I looked confused.
“But why?””
Clara answered.
“Because he believed your grandfather was the only person who could protect what he built.””
My father looked down.
“Not me.””
Clara smiled.
“Actually, Daniel, he chose you.””
My father was quiet.
I knew why.
Because my father had spent his entire life believing he was an outsider.
A man who was given a chance.
Not a man who was chosen.
Richard slammed his hand onto the table.
“This changes nothing.””
Everyone looked at him.
He pointed at my father.
“He’s still not blood.””
My anger rose.
But my father stopped me.
He looked at Richard.
“You still don’t understand.””
Richard laughed.
“What?””
“My father didn’t choose me because of my blood.””
My father stepped closer.
“He chose me because I had the values you never had.””
Richard’s face tightened.
“You think you’re better than me?””
“No.””
My father looked at him.
“I think I became better than you by refusing to become you.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Marcus’s phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“What happened?”” I asked.
He looked at my father.
“The media received another statement.””
Richard smiled.
“Finally.””
Marcus ignored him.
“Someone leaked the original financial records.””
Richard’s smile disappeared.
“What?””
Marcus turned the phone around.
The headline appeared.
*“Whitmore Family Accused of Decades-Long Corporate Fraud.””*
The room exploded.
Executives began whispering.
Richard grabbed the phone.
“No.””
He scrolled quickly.
His hands started shaking.
“This isn’t possible.””
Clara calmly closed her briefcase.
“It is.””
Richard looked at her.
“You.””
She nodded.
“I spent twenty-five years waiting for the right moment.””
I stared at her.
“Why now?””
She looked at my father.
“Because your wedding forced Daniel to stop hiding.””
My father looked confused.
“What do you mean?””
Clara smiled faintly.
“Richard never expected you to walk away.””
She looked at me.
“He thought you would choose wealth over your father’s dignity.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“And when I didn’t?””
“He panicked.””
She pointed toward Richard.
“He revealed himself.””
Richard backed away.
“No.””
But it was too late.
For the first time, the world was seeing him clearly.
Then my phone buzzed.
Another unknown number.
I opened the message.
One sentence.
*You think Richard Whitmore is the enemy? Ask your father why he never told you about your mother’s death.*
I froze.
My father saw my expression.
“What happened?””
I looked at him.
The question I had carried for years suddenly felt heavier.
“Dad…”
His face changed.
“What?””
May you like
I turned the phone toward him.
And the color disappeared from his face.
