Chapter 6: The Man Behind the Lie

I read the sentence again.

Then again.

The words refused to make sense.

*Daniel Henderson was never the rightful owner of the company.*

I looked at Beverly.

“What is this?””

She smiled.

“Evidence.””

Fiona stepped forward.

“Mom, what are you doing?””

Beverly didn’t even look at her.

“Your fiancé deserves the truth.””

I laughed bitterly.

“The truth?””

“Yes.””

“You mean another story where my father gets blamed?””

Beverly’s expression hardened.

“You only know one side.””

She pushed the document closer.

“Read it.””

I looked down.

It was an ownership agreement.

My grandfather’s company.

My father’s signature.

And a section I had never seen before.

A transfer clause.

My heart raced.

“What does this mean?””

Beverly folded her arms.

“It means your father took control of a company that wasn’t his.””

I looked at her.

“Do you actually expect me to believe this?””

“I expect you to ask questions.””

That was the problem.

A small part of me already was.

I left the mansion with the document.

I didn’t say goodbye to Fiona.

I didn’t say anything to Beverly.

I went straight back to my father.

He was still in his office.

Still working.

Still carrying the weight of everything alone.

When he saw my face, he knew.

“You found out.””

I placed the document on his desk.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His eyes moved to the paper.

Then he closed them.

For a moment, he looked older.

Much older.

“Because I hoped you would never have to choose.””

“Choose what?””

“Between believing me and believing the evidence.””

My voice became quiet.

“Is it true?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

That was enough.

“Dad.””

He sat down.

“Your grandfather transferred the company to me.””

I stared.

“But Beverly says—”

“Beverly says many things.””

“Then why does the document exist?””

My father looked at the paper.

“Because Richard created it.””

“What?””

“He wanted legal control.””

My father stood and walked to an old cabinet.

He opened a drawer.

Inside was a stack of documents.

Old.

Yellowed.

Carefully preserved.

“I kept these for twenty-five years.””

He handed me the first page.

It was a letter.

Written by my grandfather.

I read the opening line.

*Daniel, if you are reading this, it means they finally tried to take what I gave you.*

My breathing stopped.

I looked at my father.

“What is this?””

His voice was low.

“The truth.””

I kept reading.

The letter explained everything.

My grandfather had known Richard was dangerous.

He had secretly transferred ownership of the company to my father because he trusted his son more than any business partner.

But there was one final paragraph.

One sentence that changed everything.

*If Richard and Beverly ever try to destroy Daniel, reveal the second agreement.*

I looked up.

“Second agreement?””

My father nodded.

“I never opened it.””

“Why?””

“Because I promised your grandfather I wouldn’t unless I had no other choice.””

I stared at him.

“Dad…”

Before he could answer, Marcus rushed into the office.

“Mr. Henderson.””

My father turned.

“What happened?””

Marcus looked at me.

Then at my father.

“The Whitmores just released a statement.””

My stomach dropped.

“What statement?””

Marcus handed over his tablet.

The headline appeared.

*“Henderson Global Holdings Founder Accused of Corporate Theft.””*

I looked at my father.

“They’re attacking you.””

My father didn’t look surprised.

He looked prepared.

Then Marcus said the words that changed everything.

“There’s more.””

He swallowed.

“Richard Whitmore has someone willing to testify against you.””

“Who?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then he answered.

“Your father’s former attorney.””

My blood went cold.

May you like

Because that man was the only person besides my father who knew the entire truth.

And he had just chosen the Whitmores’ side.
