Chapter 13: The Father My Father Never Knew

The phone kept ringing.

Nobody moved.

My father stared at the screen like it was something impossible.

Like a ghost had reached out from the past.

I looked at him.

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer.

The name on the screen meant nothing to me.

But it meant everything to him.

Finally, he pressed the button.

“Hello?””

The voice on the other end was old.

Weak.

But clear enough.

“Daniel.””

My father closed his eyes.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“You know who this is.””

My father stood completely still.

The room felt smaller.

Clara looked at him.

She knew.

I knew she knew.

“Dad,” I whispered.

He covered the phone.

“Ethan, I need a moment.””

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“I spent my entire life waiting for moments you said I wasn’t ready for.””

He looked at me.

“And every time, the truth got bigger.””

The phone remained pressed to his ear.

The voice spoke again.

“Daniel, please.””

My father turned away.

“Where are you?””

A long silence.

Then he answered.

“Saint Joseph Hospital.””

My heart stopped.

The call ended.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, I asked:

“Your biological father is alive?””

My father nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

I sat down.

“How?””

He looked exhausted.

“I was told he abandoned me.””

Clara stepped forward.

“Daniel…”

My father looked at her.

“You knew?””

She looked guilty.

“I suspected.””

That hurt him.

“You knew there was a chance?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

She looked down.

“I didn’t have proof.””

My father laughed quietly.

“Everyone had pieces of my life except me.””

I understood that feeling.

Because I had felt it too.

We drove to the hospital that night.

Nobody talked.

The city lights passed by the windows, but I barely noticed them.

All I could think about was my father.

The man who had raised me.

The man who had spent his entire life believing he had been abandoned.

The hospital room was quiet.

An elderly man sat near the window.

Thin.

Pale.

But his eyes were sharp.

When my father entered, the man started crying.

“Daniel.””

My father stopped.

The room became silent.

“I thought I would never see you again.””

My father didn’t move.

“You left.””

The old man lowered his head.

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

No excuses.

No lies.

Just one word.

“Yes.””

My father stepped closer.

“Why?””

The man looked at him.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

My father laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that.””

The old man closed his eyes.

“I know.””

He looked at me.

“And you must be Ethan.””

I nodded.

“How do you know?””

“Because I have followed your life from a distance.””

My father’s expression hardened.

“You watched?””

The man looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you come back?””

The old man struggled to answer.

“Because Richard’s father threatened me.””

My father froze.

“Thomas?””

The old man nodded.

“He knew I was Daniel’s real father.””

I felt confused.

“But why would that matter?””

The old man looked at me.

“Because your father wasn’t adopted by chance.””

My father went still.

“What?””

The man took a deep breath.

“Thomas Whitmore knew your mother’s family.””

I frowned.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

He looked at my father.

“Daniel, you were never just a child he chose.””

The room became silent.

“You were the child he protected.””

My father stared.

“From what?””

The old man looked at me.

“From people who wanted power.””

A chill moved through me.

“Who?””

He answered quietly.

“The Whitmores.””

My father stepped back.

“But why?””

The old man reached for a folder beside him.

“Because your mother knew the truth.””

My father looked at the folder.

“What truth?””

The old man handed it to him.

Inside were old photographs.

Documents.

Letters.

And one final paper.

A birth record.

My father read it.

Then looked at me.

“What?””

He handed it over.

I looked down.

My hands started shaking.

Because the document wasn’t about my father.

It was about me.

And the name listed under my biological lineage wasn’t Henderson.

It was another name.

A name connected to the Whitmores.

May you like

The old man whispered:

“Ethan, you are the last person who can stop what Richard started.””
