Chapter 12: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine
I stared at the document.
My name was there.
My signature was there.
But I had never seen the paper before.
“What is this?””
Nobody answered immediately.
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
“It’s a transfer authorization.””
I looked at him.
“Transfer of what?””
He swallowed.
“Your father’s shares.””
My stomach dropped.
Richard had found another way.
Not through the company.
Through me.
I turned to my father.
“Could this work?””
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“How?””
My father took the document.
“This requires your approval.””
“But I never approved anything.””
Clara stepped forward.
“Forgery.””
I looked at her.
“Can they prove it’s fake?””
She examined the signature.
“Yes.””
Her voice was certain.
“Your real signature is different.””
I looked at Richard.
He stood near the door.
Quiet.
Watching.
“You knew.””
Everyone turned.
Richard smiled.
Not the confident smile from before.
A desperate one.
“You’re finally understanding.””
I stepped toward him.
“You forged my signature.””
He shrugged.
“Your signature was easy to copy.””
My hands curled into fists.
“You tried to steal from my father through me.””
Richard laughed.
“Your father stole from my family first.””
My father stepped forward.
“No.””
Richard looked at him.
“You took everything.””
My father’s voice remained calm.
“Your grandfather gave me everything because he knew you would destroy it.””
That hit Richard harder than an insult.
“You think you’re better than me?””
“No.””
My father looked at him.
“I think your own father knew the truth.””
Richard’s face changed.
For the first time…
he looked wounded.
“You don’t know anything about my father.””
Clara spoke quietly.
“I do.””
Richard turned.
“You were never the heir.””
The room went still.
“What?””
Clara opened the folder.
“Thomas Whitmore’s final will.””
Richard’s expression changed.
“No.””
“He left the majority of his private assets to charity.””
Clara looked at him.
“And the company rights were transferred away from you because he believed you lacked integrity.””
Richard stepped back.
“That’s impossible.””
“It’s written in his own words.””
She read the final line:
My son has the intelligence to succeed, but not the character to lead.
Richard looked broken.
Not because he lost money.
Because he lost the approval of the one person he spent his life trying to impress.
Fiona appeared at the doorway.
She had been crying.
“Dad…”
Richard looked at her.
For a second, he looked almost human.
Then his expression hardened.
“You.””
Fiona froze.
“You ruined everything.””
I stepped between them.
“Don’t.””
Richard laughed.
“Look at you.””
He pointed at me.
“You destroyed your wedding because of your father.””
I stared at him.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I ended my wedding because I finally understood what family means.””
Silence.
Then police lights flashed outside.
Everyone turned.
Richard’s face changed.
Marcus looked out the window.
“They’re here.””
Richard whispered:
“No.””
Clara closed her briefcase.
“It’s over.””
But as Richard was led away, he looked back at my father.
And he smiled.
Not with victory.
With warning.
“You still don’t know everything.””
My father watched him disappear.
I felt uneasy.
“Dad.””
He looked at me.
“What did he mean?””
My father didn’t answer.
Because his phone had started ringing.
He looked at the screen.
Then his entire expression changed.
I saw the name.
And my blood ran cold.
It was a name I had never heard before.
May you like
But my father knew exactly who it was.
*Daniel Henderson’s biological father.*
