Chapter 8: The Truth Hidden in the Dark

Darkness swallowed the room.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Then I heard it.

Footsteps.

Not one person.

Several.

Commander Vale grabbed my arm.

“Down.””

I reacted instantly.

Old habits.

Old training.

The same instincts my family never knew I had.

We dropped behind a concrete barrier as glass shattered somewhere across the room.

I looked at Vale.

“You knew this would happen.””

Her face tightened.

“I suspected.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

She looked genuinely afraid.

“It’s the truth.””

The emergency lights flickered on.

Red.

Weak.

The room looked like a battlefield.

Vale reached into her jacket and pulled out a small device.

“What is that?””

“Evidence.””

I laughed.

“Everyone seems to have evidence.””

Her eyes met mine.

“I deserve that.””

The honesty surprised me.

For twelve years, I imagined this moment.

I imagined screaming.

I imagined demanding answers.

I imagined her denying everything.

I never imagined regret.

“Why?””

My voice was quieter than I expected.

“Why did you destroy me?””

Vale looked down.

“Because I was trying to save you.””

I stared at her.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“No.””

My anger finally broke through.

“You don’t get to say that.””

She didn't move.

“I know.””

“You took my name.””

“I know.””

“You let my family believe I was a failure.””

“I know.””

“You made me disappear.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“And I have hated myself every day since.””

The words almost made me angrier.

Because regret didn’t undo damage.

Before I could answer, my radio activated.

The general’s voice came through.

“Samantha, report.””

I touched the communication device.

“I’m with Vale.””

A pause.

Then:

“Is she alive?””

“Yes.””

“Is she cooperating?””

I looked at Vale.

“I don’t know yet.””

Vale stepped closer.

“I can prove everything.””

She handed me the device.

“What is this?””

“A recording.””

I pressed play.

Her younger voice filled the room.

“I’m authorizing Samantha Hayes for Operation Nightfall.””

My breath caught.

Nightfall.

The mission nobody knew existed.

The one that officially never happened.

The recording continued.

Another voice spoke.

A man.

I didn’t recognize him.

“You’re certain she’s the right choice?””

Vale answered.

“She’s the best operative I’ve ever trained.””

The man laughed.

“That’s exactly why she’s dangerous.””

The recording stopped.

I looked at Vale.

“Who was that?””

She hesitated.

“The person who ordered your removal.””

“Name.””

She looked away.

“Director Thomas Kessler.””

The name meant something.

Not from my past.

From current intelligence files.

A powerful figure.

Someone untouchable.

Someone who had spent years above suspicion.

“He wanted me gone because I knew?””

Vale nodded.

“You discovered the leak.””

“And he blamed me.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you stop him?””

Her silence answered.

I felt my chest tighten.

“You helped him.””

Vale closed her eyes.

“For a moment.””

The words cut deeper than I expected.

“I was given an order.””

“And you followed it.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked at me.

“Because he threatened my family.””

The room went quiet.

A familiar pain.

A familiar excuse.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had a story.

But I was always the person who paid.

Vale continued.

“I tried to fix it afterward.””

“You wrote a letter saying I left.””

“I wrote a letter saying you were removed from active duty.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Someone changed it.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

She looked at me.

And then she said something I never expected.

“Your father.””

I froze.

“What?””

Vale swallowed.

“Richard Hayes changed the letter before it reached your family.””

“No.””

“He couldn't accept that you chose a life he couldn't control.””

The words hit harder because they sounded exactly like him.

A gunshot echoed outside.

Vale looked toward the window.

“They found us.””

I reached for my weapon.

“Who?””

Vale’s face went pale.

“The people who are trying to erase the evidence.””

The building shook.

My radio crackled.

The general’s voice came through.

“Samantha, evacuate immediately.””

I looked at Vale.

She looked at me.

And for the first time in twelve years, the woman who destroyed my life and the woman who survived it stood on the same side.

Then Vale whispered:

“They’re not here for the files.””

I tightened my grip.

“Then what are they here for?””

May you like

She looked directly at me.

“They’re here for you.””
