Chapter 2: The File Hidden for Twelve Years

Nobody moved after the general's words.

The auditorium felt smaller.

The air felt heavier.

My father stared at the folder in my hands like it was a weapon.

Maybe to him, it was.

Because inside that folder was everything he believed about me.

And everything he was about to lose.

Daniel stepped forward.

“General, I don't understand.””

The general looked at him.

“You weren't supposed to.””

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means some missions are completed without applause.””

The words silenced him.

My mother walked toward me slowly.

“Samantha, what is happening?””

For the first time in years, her voice sounded afraid.

Not angry.

Not disappointed.

Afraid.

I looked at her.

“You told everyone I quit.””

Her lips parted.

“We received a letter.””

“You received a letter that said I was no longer active.””

“That means you left.””

“No,” I said quietly.

“It means someone wanted you to believe I left.””

My father's face changed.

“You're accusing the military of lying to us?””

The general answered before I could.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

“I'm saying your daughter was never a quitter.””

A murmur spread through the room.

Daniel shook his head.

“That doesn't make sense.””

The general looked at him.

“You graduated today after years of training.””

“Yes, sir.””

“Do you know what happens to people who operate outside the spotlight?””

Daniel didn't answer.

The general continued.

“They disappear.””

My brother looked at me.

For the first time, I saw uncertainty in his eyes.

I opened the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

Twelve years old.

The night my family thought I failed.

The night I was supposedly sent home.

The picture showed me standing beside three soldiers.

But not in a training field.

Not in a classroom.

In a destroyed building under a black sky.

The person standing beside me was someone my father recognized immediately.

His face went pale.

“No…”

I looked at him.

“You know him?””

My father's hands shook.

“That’s impossible.””

The general watched him carefully.

“Mr. Hayes, you seem surprised.””

My father stared at the photograph.

“That man died.””

The room went silent.

Because now everyone was listening.

The general's voice lowered.

“He was reported missing.””

My father swallowed.

“Same thing.””

“No,” the general said.

“It wasn't.””

Daniel looked between them.

“Who is he?””

Nobody answered.

I closed the folder.

“His name was Captain Michael Reeves.””

My father's expression collapsed.

I had heard that name before.

Not from him.

From the files.

Captain Reeves was one of the reasons my career changed.

One of the reasons I never came home.

One of the reasons my family was told a carefully constructed lie.

Daniel looked at me.

“You knew him?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

I looked at the graduation stage behind him.

The medals.

The uniforms.

The cameras.

Everything my brother had dreamed about.

Then I looked back at my family.

“I was sent to bring him home.””

My mother covered her mouth.

“You?””

The general nodded.

“She wasn't a trainee anymore.””

My father's voice became sharper.

“Then what was she?””

The general looked around the room.

Everyone was waiting.

But before he could answer, an officer rushed toward him.

“General, we have a problem.””

The general turned.

“What happened?””

The officer handed him a tablet.

The general read the screen.

His expression changed immediately.

My stomach tightened.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He looked at me.

“Samantha…”

The way he said my name told me everything.

Something had gone wrong.

“Someone leaked the disclosure files.””

My father stepped closer.

“Disclosure files?””

The general ignored him.

His eyes stayed on mine.

“And whoever leaked them included one more piece of information.””

I felt the room disappear.

“What information?””

The general hesitated.

Then he said:

“The person responsible for your disappearance twelve years ago was not an enemy agent.””

May you like

He looked toward my family.

“It was someone who knew you.””
