Chapter 13: The Brother’s Secret

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Not the general.

Not Reeves.

Not even Kessler.

Everyone looked at Daniel.

My brother.

The person who spent twelve years standing on the winning side of a story that destroyed me.

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“What did you say?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“I’m the reason they found you.””

The words were quiet.

But they were louder than any explosion.

I stepped toward him.

“Explain.””

Kessler smiled from behind the officers.

“Yes, Daniel. Tell her.””

The general immediately looked at him.

“You’re done speaking.””

But Daniel raised a hand.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

“I need to.””

My chest tightened.

After all these years, after every lie, after every betrayal, he finally had something to say.

“Start talking.””

Daniel swallowed.

“When I was sixteen, Dad took me to his office.””

I stared at him.

“Your office?””

He nodded.

“He showed me files.””

My stomach turned.

“What files?””

“Yours.””

The room became silent.

“He showed me your mission reports. Your training records. Everything.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Because he wanted me to understand why you were different.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Different.””

The same word.

Always that word.

Daniel continued.

“He told me you were becoming someone dangerous.””

I shook my head.

“No. He told you I was becoming someone he couldn’t control.””

Daniel didn't argue.

Because he knew it was true.

“He asked me to help him.””

The general’s expression hardened.

“Help him do what?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Find out if you were going to come back.””

I froze.

“You tracked me?””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I tried not to.””

Tried.

That word.

Everyone had tried.

Everyone had failed.

“I was sixteen,” he said.

“I was scared of Dad. I thought he knew what he was doing.””

“And then?””

Daniel looked away.

“Then I saw the mission footage.””

My heart stopped.

“What footage?””

“The night you disappeared.””

Reeves stepped forward.

“Impossible.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Dad had access.””

The general’s face changed.

“He shouldn’t have.””

“He did.””

Daniel continued.

“I saw you.””

His eyes filled.

“You were injured. You were carrying Captain Reeves.””

Reeves looked stunned.

“You saw that?””

Daniel nodded.

“And I knew Dad was lying.””

I looked at him.

“Then why?””

His voice broke.

“Because I was afraid.””

There it was again.

Fear.

The excuse that built my entire family’s lie.

“You were afraid of him.””

“Yes.””

“You were afraid to tell me.””

“Yes.””

“You were afraid to lose your perfect life.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

Because now I couldn't hate him the way I wanted to.

The worst betrayals were always the ones committed by people you still loved.

Kessler laughed.

“How touching.””

Everyone turned.

He stood calmly.

“You all want to pretend this was about one villain.””

He looked at me.

“But Samantha, your family was never special.””

I glared at him.

“What does that mean?””

“It means people break when pressure is applied.””

The general moved closer.

“Enough.””

But Kessler continued.

“Your father broke. Your brother broke. Vale broke.””

He smiled.

“But you didn’t.””

I stared at him.

“That's why you were dangerous.””

The room went quiet.

Kessler looked almost impressed.

“You were supposed to become another damaged person controlled by fear.””

He shook his head.

“Instead, you became someone impossible to manipulate.””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked destroyed.

“I’m sorry.””

I wanted to say something.

Anything.

But twelve years of pain couldn't disappear because someone finally apologized.

So I said the only honest thing.

“I believe you’re sorry.””

His eyes lifted.

“But I don’t know if I can forgive you.””

He nodded.

“I understand.””

The general stepped forward.

“Kessler is being taken into custody.””

Officers moved.

For the first time, the man who controlled so many lives looked powerless.

But before they took him away, he looked at me.

“You think this is over?””

I didn't answer.

He smiled.

“You still don’t know the final reason you were chosen.””

My expression changed.

“What?””

He looked at Daniel.

“Tell her.””

Daniel went pale.

“No.””

Kessler laughed.

“Tell her why your father was so afraid of her.””

The officers dragged him away.

But the question remained.

I turned toward Daniel.

“What does he mean?””

Daniel didn't speak.

And that scared me.

“Daniel.””

He looked at me.

“The mission wasn’t random.””

I waited.

“You weren’t chosen because you were the best candidate.””

My heart sank.

“Then why?””

May you like

Daniel whispered:

“Because of Mom.””
