Chapter 5: The Man Who Came Back From the Dead

The next morning, I sat in a government conference room staring at a photograph of a dead man.

Except he wasn't dead.

Not anymore.

Captain Michael Reeves.

The person who changed my life.

The person who taught me that courage wasn't about having no fear.

It was about moving forward while carrying it.

And the person my family believed had died twelve years ago.

The general sat across from me.

“We confirmed the image.””

I looked up.

“Where?””

“An intelligence facility.””

My eyebrows lifted.

“He accessed my records?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

The general folded his hands.

“That is what we need to discover.””

I looked through the files.

“Captain Reeves wouldn't betray his team.””

“No one said he did.””

“Someone is trying to make it look like he did.””

The general studied me.

“You still trust him.””

I didn't hesitate.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

I remembered the night everything changed.

The fire.

The smoke.

The radio silence.

And Reeves pulling me out when everyone else thought I was gone.

“Because when everyone else saw a mission falling apart, he saw people worth saving.””

The door opened.

An officer stepped inside.

“General, we have confirmation.””

The general stood.

“From where?””

“Captain Reeves contacted us.””

My heart stopped.

After twelve years.

A person from my past had reached back into my life.

“What did he say?””

The officer looked at me.

“He requested to speak with Samantha Hayes.””

The room became silent.

The general nodded.

“Bring him in.””

I waited.

Every second felt longer than the last.

Then the door opened.

And there he was.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakably him.

Michael Reeves walked inside.

The man my family thought was dead.

The man I thought I would never see again.

He stopped when he saw me.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he smiled slightly.

“You got taller.””

I almost laughed.

“Twelve years, and that's what you say?””

His expression softened.

“I wasn't sure I'd ever get to say anything.””

My eyes burned.

“Why didn't you come back?””

Reeves looked down.

“Because I wasn't allowed to.””

The general watched him.

“Captain, explain.””

Reeves placed a small device on the table.

“A recording.””

He pressed a button.

My father's voice filled the room.

Everyone froze.

“Richard, you need to understand. If Samantha comes back, people will ask questions.””

My father's voice.

Twelve years ago.

My hands went cold.

The recording continued.

Another voice answered.

A voice I recognized.

My father.

“She’s my daughter.””

The first voice said:

“Then do what’s best for your family.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

The general looked at me.

“Who was the second voice?””

I already knew.

My father.

But I wanted to hear him admit it.

The door opened.

Because apparently the universe wanted answers before I was ready for them.

My father walked into the room.

He stopped when he saw Reeves.

His face lost all color.

“You.””

Reeves looked at him.

“Hello, Richard.””

My father backed away.

“You survived.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Reeves looked at me.

“Because Samantha saved me.””

The words hit harder than any accusation.

Daniel, who had followed my father inside, stared at me.

“You saved him?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

He looked confused.

“But Dad said you ran.””

Reeves turned toward Daniel.

“Your father was wrong.””

My father’s voice rose.

“You don't understand what happened!””

“No,” I said quietly.

“We understand exactly what happened.””

He looked at me.

For the first time in twelve years, my father looked afraid of me.

Not because I was angry.

Because the truth had finally arrived.

Reeves reached into his jacket and pulled out another envelope.

“I didn't come back just to clear your name.””

He handed it to me.

“There is something inside you need to see.””

I opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

My breath caught.

Because it showed me.

Not twelve years ago.

Not during a mission.

But recently.

Three weeks earlier.

Standing beside someone I never expected to see.

Someone connected to the reason my life was destroyed.

I looked at Reeves.

“Where did you get this?””

May you like

His answer made my blood run cold.

“From the person who ordered your disappearance.””
