Chapter 11: The Woman Behind the Curtain
I knew that voice.
Not because I heard it often.
Because I spent years trying to forget it.
Commander Elizabeth Vale stood in the doorway.
But she wasn't alone.
A man stood behind her.
Older.
Calm.
Confident.
The kind of person who had spent years believing consequences were for other people.
Daniel stepped backward.
“Samantha…”
I looked at him.
“You brought her here?””
“No.””
Vale answered.
“I did.””
My hand moved instinctively.
Not toward a weapon.
Toward control.
Because everything about this situation felt like a mission.
Unknown variables.
Unknown threats.
Unknown intentions.
The man behind Vale smiled.
“Still analyzing every room.””
I looked at him.
“Who are you?””
He smiled wider.
“You know who I am.””
I did.
But I needed him to say it.
“Director Thomas Kessler.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Wait.””
He looked at Vale.
“You brought him?””
Vale didn't answer.
Kessler stepped inside.
“I’m disappointed, Samantha.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
“You were always better at following orders than this.””
A strange calm came over me.
“Funny.””
“What?””
“I spent twelve years being called a failure because I supposedly couldn't follow orders.””
Kessler smiled.
“And yet here you are.””
“Here I am.””
The two words carried everything.
The missions.
The betrayal.
The years stolen.
Kessler looked at Daniel.
“You should have stayed quiet.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“No.””
Kessler raised an eyebrow.
“No?””
“I spent my whole life trying to be the son Dad wanted.””
His voice shook.
“But I won’t spend the rest of it protecting his lies.””
For the first time, Kessler looked annoyed.
“You don't understand what your father sacrificed.””
I laughed.
“No.””
I stepped forward.
“You don't understand what I sacrificed.””
Silence.
Kessler studied me.
“You think this is about revenge.””
“Isn’t it?””
“No.””
He walked closer.
“This is about control.””
I frowned.
“What?””
He smiled.
“Your family was useful.””
The words made my stomach turn.
“Useful?””
“Your father wanted a perfect son.””
He looked at Daniel.
“And he wanted a daughter who would never challenge him.””
Daniel looked sick.
Kessler continued.
“People like Richard Hayes are easy to manipulate.””
I felt anger rising.
“You destroyed my life because my father was weak?””
“No.””
He looked directly at me.
“I destroyed your life because you were dangerous.””
“Because I knew the truth.””
“Because you were capable of exposing it.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Vale.
“You knew?””
She looked away.
Kessler answered.
“Everyone knew.””
That hurt.
More than I expected.
Because even after everything…
A part of me hoped someone had been fighting for me.
Kessler stepped closer.
“You were supposed to disappear.””
“But I didn't.””
“No.””
His smile faded.
“You survived.””
I stared at him.
“Why come here?””
He reached into his coat.
My body tensed.
But he pulled out a small drive.
“Because I want to make a deal.””
I almost laughed.
“After everything?””
“Yes.””
“What kind of deal?””
He held out the drive.
“The truth.””
I didn't move.
“What’s the catch?””
His smile returned.
“There is always a catch.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Don’t take it.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because he never gives anything away.””
Kessler looked at my brother.
“You really are your sister’s brother now.””
Daniel ignored him.
The building suddenly shook.
A loud impact echoed outside.
Everyone froze.
Vale looked toward the window.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
Her face went pale.
“Kessler wasn’t supposed to come alone.””
The lights flickered.
My radio activated.
The general’s voice came through.
“Samantha, respond.””
I grabbed it.
“General, we have company.””
Static.
Then silence.
Kessler smiled.
“You should know something.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“The people outside aren’t here to arrest me.””
The door behind him started to open.
May you like
He whispered:
“They’re here to make sure nobody leaves.””
