Chapter 9: The Secret Behind Elena’s Smile
The mansion had never felt so quiet.
Rico stood beside the table.
The photograph of Elena rested between them.
Leo held Clara’s hand tightly.
“Mommy said bad things.””
Rico lowered himself.
“About who?””
Leo looked uncomfortable.
Clara immediately stepped in.
“Don’t ask him.””
Rico looked at her.
“I need to know.””
“No.””
Her voice surprised him.
“Look at him.””
Rico did.
Leo was trembling.
Not crying.
Not screaming.
Just afraid.
A feeling Rico knew too well.
He stood slowly.
“You’re right.””
Clara blinked.
“What?””
“I’m pushing.””
It was the first time she had heard him admit it.
“I keep doing that.””
Nobody responded.
Because everyone knew.
Rico Moretti had spent his life forcing answers from people.
But Leo was not a witness.
He was a child.
That evening, Clara stayed with Leo while Rico searched through Elena’s belongings.
Hours passed.
Then he found something.
A hidden compartment inside an old jewelry box.
Inside was a small key.
And a note.
For Clara.
Rico stared at it.
He did not open it.
He carried it to her.
“This was hers.””
Clara looked at the handwriting.
Her heart raced.
“Elena wrote this?””
“Yes.””
She opened the note.
Clara,
If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you.
Your mother wanted you far away from this world.
She was right.
But there is something you deserve to know.
Your father was not the man they told you he was.
And Rico Moretti is not the monster people believe.
But someone close to him is.
Someone who has spent years hiding behind loyalty.
Someone who will do anything to keep the truth buried.
Clara stopped.
A second page was missing.
“That’s all?””
Rico checked the envelope.
“There should be more.””
She looked up.
“Someone took it.””
They both knew what that meant.
Someone had been inside Elena’s things.
Someone had been searching.
Someone was still ahead of them.
Then Leo walked into the room.
He held something in his hand.
“Clara.””
She turned.
“What is it?””
He opened his small fist.
A silver necklace.
Clara recognized it instantly.
The same necklace Elena wore in every photograph.
“Where did you get that?””
Leo pointed upstairs.
“Mommy room.””
Rico froze.
“Elena’s room?””
Leo nodded.
Clara looked at Rico.
“You said nobody entered that room.””
“No one did.””
“Then how did he get this?””
Nobody answered.
Because the answer was impossible.
Unless someone had been there recently.
Rico moved upstairs.
Fast.
They followed.
Elena’s room remained exactly as it had six months ago.
Her books.
Her clothes.
Her perfume.
Everything untouched.
Except one thing.
The mirror.
Written across the glass in black ink were four words:
YOU NEVER KNEW HER.
Rico stared.
Clara felt a strange fear.
Not because of the message.
Because she understood it.
Someone wasn’t trying to scare them.
Someone was trying to tell them something.
Then Dante’s phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed.
“Boss.””
Rico looked over.
“What?””
Dante slowly lowered the phone.
“The police found a body.””
Nobody spoke.
“Whose?””
Dante looked at Clara.
And she knew before he said it.
“The victim was Michael Hale.””
The man who had told them the truth.
The man who knew about the recording.
The man who knew about her father.
Rico stepped forward.
“Who found him?””
Dante swallowed.
“Someone left a message beside the body.””
Clara’s voice shook.
“What message?””
Dante looked down.
“Your mother was right.””
A pause.
Then:
“She should have killed you too.””
Clara felt the room spin.
Because whoever was hunting them was no longer hiding.
May you like
And they were not afraid of Ricardo Moretti.
They were coming for her.
