Chapter 12: The Room Nobody Knew Existed
Rico Moretti had searched his mansion hundreds of times.
Security checked every entrance.
Workers cleaned every room.
He knew every hallway.
Every staircase.
Every hidden camera.
But after Leo’s words, he realized something terrifying.
He did not know his own house.
“Under Daddy’s house.””
The sentence repeated in his mind.
Clara stood beside him.
“Where would something be hidden?””
Rico looked around the hallway.
“My father built this place.””
“That doesn’t answer the question.””
“No.””
He walked slowly.
“It answers it.””
They followed him downstairs.
Past the wine cellar.
Past the storage rooms.
To an old section of the mansion that had been closed for years.
Dante frowned.
“Boss, this area was inspected.””
“By who?””
The guard hesitated.
“Maintenance.””
Rico looked at him.
“Not good enough.””
At the end of the hallway was a wall.
Nothing unusual.
Except Rico stopped.
Clara noticed.
“What?””
“My father hated wasted space.””
He touched the wall.
“There should be a room here.””
Dante scanned it.
“There’s nothing on the plans.””
“Exactly.””
Minutes later, they discovered a hidden mechanism.
The wall opened.
Behind it was a narrow staircase.
Cold air came from below.
Clara looked at Rico.
“You knew?””
“No.””
For once, she believed him.
They descended.
At the bottom was a small room.
No furniture.
No decorations.
Only boxes.
Hundreds of documents.
Photographs.
Old recordings.
A lifetime of secrets.
Rico picked up one folder.
His father’s name was written on it.
Clara found another.
Adrian Vance.
Her hands shook.
Inside were letters.
The first one was from Elena.
Adrian,
If anything happens to me, give Clara the truth.
Rico deserves to know.
But not until she is ready.
Clara stopped.
“She knew about me.””
Rico came closer.
They read together.
Adrian,
The child cannot grow up knowing this world.
She deserves a normal life.
Promise me you will stay away.
Clara felt tears forming.
Her father had not abandoned her.
He had stayed away.
Because someone asked him to.
Then they found the final recording.
A small tape player.
Rico pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then a voice.
Antonio.
“You should have taken the offer.””
Another voice.
Adrian.
“I’m not selling out my family.””
Antonio laughed.
“You never understood. This was never about money.””
A pause.
“It was about removing people who didn’t belong.””
Rico’s face changed.
The recording continued.
“You killed Elena.””
Antonio’s voice.
“I corrected a mistake.””
Clara covered her mouth.
The truth was finally there.
But then Adrian said something that made Rico freeze.
“Rico will find out.””
Antonio answered:
“No.””
A pause.
“Because Rico is the reason everyone dies.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
The room felt suffocating.
Clara looked at Rico.
“What did he mean?””
Rico didn’t answer.
Because he already knew.
Then Dante’s phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed.
“Boss.””
“What?””
“The police just arrived.””
“Why?””
Dante swallowed.
“They found the murder weapon from Elena’s case.””
Rico stood.
“Where?””
Dante looked at Clara.
Then said:
“In your office.””
The room went silent.
Clara felt the world shift again.
Because whoever was framing Rico was not just trying to destroy him.
They were making sure the world believed he was guilty.
