Chapter 11: The Brother Who Wanted Everything
Antonio Moretti had always been good at pretending.
That was what made him dangerous.
He smiled when people expected anger.
He offered help when people expected suspicion.
He stood beside Rico for years, letting everyone believe loyalty was the same thing as love.
But Clara now understood something.
Some people stood beside you because they wanted to protect you.
Others stood beside you because it was the closest place to put a knife.
Rico watched the frozen image on the screen.
Antonio behind Elena.
His cousin.
His brother in everything except blood.
“No.””
The word came quietly.
Clara looked at him.
“You still don’t believe it?””
Rico didn’t answer.
“He could have been there.””
“Could have?””
Rico looked angry.
Not at her.
At himself.
“I trusted him.””
The admission sounded painful.
Dante entered the room.
“Boss.””
Rico turned.
“What?””
“We found something else.””
Dante handed him a folder.
Inside were financial records.
Transfers.
Hidden accounts.
Antonio’s name appeared repeatedly.
Clara watched Rico read.
Every page made him colder.
“How long?””
Dante looked down.
“Years.””
Rico laughed once.
A bitter sound.
“Years.””
He closed the folder.
“He wasn’t trying to take my business.””
“No,” Dante said.
“He was trying to take my life.””
Before they could act, Antonio called.
Rico answered.
“Where are you?””
Antonio laughed softly.
“Not even hello?””
“You know why I’m calling.””
A pause.
Then:
“I assume you found Elena’s little surprise.””
Clara’s eyes widened.
Rico’s grip tightened.
“You knew?””
“I knew she was stubborn.””
“You killed her.””
Silence.
Then Antonio sighed.
“Still dramatic.””
Rico’s face changed.
“You’re admitting it.””
“No.””
Antonio’s voice became colder.
“I’m admitting your wife made a mistake.””
Clara stepped closer.
Rico put the phone on speaker.
“What mistake?””
“She trusted people who didn’t deserve it.””
“Like you?””
Antonio laughed.
“Like you.””
The words hit harder.
“You think Elena loved you?””
Rico said nothing.
“She loved the man she thought you could become.””
Antonio continued.
“But she knew the truth.””
“What truth?””
“That you were always going to become your father.””
Rico’s eyes darkened.
“My father was nothing like me.””
“No?””
Antonio’s voice sharpened.
“Then why did Adrian Vance die?””
Clara froze.
Rico looked at her.
Antonio knew.
“You don’t know, do you?””
Rico’s voice became dangerous.
“Where are you?””
Antonio ignored him.
“Your father killed Adrian.””
Clara felt sick.
“What?””
Antonio continued.
“Ask Rico why your father disappeared.””
The call ended.
Nobody moved.
The silence was unbearable.
Clara looked at Rico.
“Is it true?””
Rico looked away.
That was enough.
“Rico.””
“I didn’t know everything.””
Her expression changed.
“What does that mean?””
“It means your father was involved in something dangerous.””
“And?””
“And my father ordered things I couldn’t stop.””
Clara stepped back.
“You knew something happened.””
“Yes.””
“You knew my father was gone.””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
Rico looked broken.
“I didn’t know you existed.””
The answer stopped her.
“What?””
“After Adrian disappeared, Margaret left. Elena tried to find her.””
Rico swallowed.
“We thought she ran because she was afraid.””
Clara stared.
“My mother spent twenty-five years raising me alone.””
“I know.””
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“You don’t.””
Rico had no defense.
Because she was right.
The next morning, Clara packed her bag.
Rico found her near the front door.
“Where are you going?””
“Home.””
“This is not safe.””
“Neither is this.””
He went silent.
“I can protect you.””
Clara looked at him.
“That’s the problem.””
“What?””
“Everyone around you thinks protection means keeping secrets.””
The words hurt because they were true.
Before she left, Leo ran downstairs.
“Clara?””
She turned.
The little boy looked terrified.
“No go.””
Her heart broke.
“I have to.””
Leo shook his head.
“Mommy said.””
Clara stopped.
“What did she say?””
Leo whispered:
“Don’t leave before you see what’s under Daddy’s house.””
Rico froze.
Clara looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
May you like
But Leo was already crying.
And for the first time, Rico looked afraid of his own home.
