Chapter 8: The Man Everyone Blamed
Clara could not move.
The coffee shop continued around her.
People laughed.
A child dropped a spoon.
Someone ordered a latte.
The world kept going.
But her world had stopped.
“My father killed Elena?””
Michael Hale looked uncomfortable.
“No.””
The answer came so quickly that Clara almost missed it.
“No?””
“No.””
Rico leaned forward.
“Then explain.””
Michael looked between them.
“I spent twenty years investigating people like you.””
Rico’s expression hardened.
“People like me?””
“Powerful families. Criminal organizations. Men who believed money could erase consequences.””
Michael looked at Clara.
“But your mother was different.””
Clara swallowed.
“My mother knew my father?””
“Yes.””
“Who was he?””
Michael looked at Rico.
Then back at her.
“His name was Adrian Vance.””
The name meant nothing.
But Rico reacted.
Only slightly.
Enough.
“You know him,” Clara said.
Rico’s silence answered.
“Rico.””
He looked away.
“I knew of him.””
Michael gave a bitter laugh.
“Everyone knew of him.””
Clara sat straighter.
“Tell me.””
Michael sighed.
“Adrian Vance was once part of the Moretti organization.””
Rico’s face tightened.
“He wasn’t family.””
“No,” Michael agreed.
“But he was close.””
Clara looked at Rico.
“Did you know him?””
“Yes.””
The word hurt more than she expected.
“How?””
Rico looked down.
“Because he saved my life once.””
The revelation shocked her.
“You’re saying my father saved you?””
“Yes.””
“Then why is everyone acting like he was a monster?””
Michael answered.
“Because monsters are easier to understand.””
He took a sip of coffee.
“Adrian discovered something about the Moretti empire. Something dangerous.””
“What?””
Michael looked at Rico.
“He found evidence that someone inside the family was selling information.””
Rico’s eyes narrowed.
“Antonio.””
Michael didn’t confirm it.
He didn’t need to.
Clara felt overwhelmed.
“My mother knew all of this?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did she accuse Rico?””
Michael looked at her sadly.
“Because she had no choice.””
Rico’s voice became quiet.
“No choice?””
Michael nodded.
“The night Elena died, Margaret found evidence.””
“What evidence?””
“A recording.””
The room became silent.
“A recording of someone ordering Elena’s murder.””
Clara’s hands tightened around her cup.
“Who?””
Michael looked at Rico.
“That’s the problem.””
Rico stared back.
“Say it.””
Michael hesitated.
“The voice on the recording sounded like yours.””
Clara’s heart dropped.
Rico looked like he had been punched.
“No.””
“Margaret didn’t believe it.””
“Because she knew me.””
“Yes.””
Michael nodded.
“She believed someone was using your voice.””
Rico’s face went cold.
“Then where is the recording?””
“Gone.””
“Who had it?””
Michael looked at Clara.
“Your mother.””
The answer made no sense.
Her mother had spent years hiding from the truth.
But she had carried the proof.
“Where is she?””
Michael looked away.
“Margaret died before she could reveal it.””
Clara’s eyes filled with anger.
“So everyone just kept secrets?””
Michael didn’t deny it.
“That’s how people survive around powerful families.””
Rico stood.
“We need to find that recording.””
Michael grabbed his arm.
“Wait.””
Rico stopped.
“Someone killed Elena because of that recording.””
A pause.
“Someone killed Adrian because he knew too much.””
Clara looked up.
“My father was murdered?””
Michael nodded.
“Three months after Elena.””
The room felt smaller.
Two deaths.
One secret.
One missing recording.
On the way back, nobody spoke.
Rico drove.
Clara stared out the window.
Everything she knew about her life had changed.
When they reached the mansion, Leo ran toward her.
“Clara!””
She caught him.
For a moment, she forgot everything.
Then Leo whispered something.
Something that made Rico stop.
“Mommy said you’re not supposed to trust him.””
Clara looked at Rico.
“Who?””
Leo pointed.
Not at Rico.
Not at Dante.
At the photograph on the table.
The one of Elena.
“Her.””
Clara felt cold.
Because Elena was supposed to be dead.
May you like
And yet somehow…
Her son was afraid of her.
