Chapter 13: The Gun on His Desk

The gun was lying in the center of Rico Moretti’s desk like a final judgment.

Detective Sarah Collins stood beside it while two officers photographed every angle.

Clara remained in the doorway.

She had seen enough evidence in the past few days to understand one thing.

Whoever wanted Rico blamed had planned this carefully.

The murder weapon had not been left in a random room.

It had been placed where police would expect it to be.

His office.

His desk.

His fingerprints would be easy to explain.

His access would be undeniable.

It was almost too perfect.

Rico walked into the room with his hands at his sides.

Sarah immediately raised a hand.

“Stop there.””

Rico stopped.

“What is that?””

Sarah looked at him.

“A nine-millimeter pistol.””

“And?””

“And it matches the weapon used to kill Elena Moretti.””

Clara’s stomach dropped.

Rico’s expression barely moved.

“I’ve never seen that gun.””

One of the officers opened a small evidence bag.

“Serial number has been filed off.””

Rico looked at the weapon.

“Convenient.””

Sarah studied him.

“You understand how this looks.””

“Yes.””

“I need to take you into custody.””

Dante stepped forward.

“No.””

Rico lifted a hand.

“Dante.””

“But, boss—”

“Don’t.””

The entire room went silent.

Rico turned toward Clara.

For one terrible second, she saw the possibility that he might be taken away.

And Leo would wake up asking for him.

Her throat tightened.

Rico spoke quietly.

“Take care of Leo.””

Clara stared at him.

“I will.””

His eyes remained on hers.

“And don’t trust anyone who tells you this is over.””

The officers moved toward him.

Clara suddenly noticed something.

A tiny scratch along the desk.

Fresh.

Very fresh.

She stepped closer.

“Detective.””

Sarah looked at her.

“What?””

Clara pointed.

“That wasn't there yesterday.””

One officer frowned.

“A scratch?””

“No.””

Clara bent down.

There was a thin black line running along the lower edge of the desk.

Paint transfer.

She remembered the hidden room.

The boxes.

The old metal cabinets.

The same dark green paint.

“Someone moved the desk.””

Sarah stared at her.

“Why does that matter?””

“Because the gun was placed recently.””

Rico looked at Clara.

Then at the desk.

Sarah crouched.

She touched the mark without disturbing the evidence.

“Bag that section.””

The officer immediately complied.

Rico was led away.

As he passed Clara, Leo came running down the hall.

“Daddy!””

The officers stopped.

Leo grabbed Rico’s leg.

Rico crouched.

“I’m coming back.””

“No.””

Leo clung to him.

“You said.””

“I know.””

“You said Daddy always comes back.””

Rico closed his eyes.

Clara had never seen him look so vulnerable.

He touched his son’s hair.

“This time, I need you to be brave.””

Leo shook his head.

“I don’t want brave.””

Rico almost smiled through the pain.

“What do you want?””

“Stay.””

Rico looked at Clara.

Then at his son.

“I want that too.””

The officers gently pulled him away.

Leo screamed.

But this time, Clara caught him before he could run.

She held him tightly.

“Daddy!””

Rico stopped at the doorway.

He looked back.

Their eyes met.

Then he was gone.

An hour later, Clara sat in Detective Collins’s car.

The hidden recording played again.

Antonio’s voice filled the cabin.

“You should have taken the offer.””

Adrian answered.

“I’m not selling out my family.””

Then the fatal words.

“It was about removing people who didn’t belong.””

Sarah paused the audio.

“Where did you get this?””

Clara told her.

“An underground room.””

Sarah looked stunned.

“Does anyone else know?””

“Dante.””

“Good.””

Sarah restarted the recording.

The voice of Antonio came through.

“I corrected a mistake.””

Sarah stopped it again.

“That may not be enough for court.””

Clara stared at her.

“Then what is?””

“Something that puts him at the scene.””

Clara remembered the photograph.

Antonio behind Elena.

The old security footage.

Then something clicked.

“The photograph.””

“What photograph?””

“The one showing Antonio near Elena’s car.””

Sarah held out her hand.

“Where is it?””

Clara reached into her bag.

She had taken a copy.

Sarah studied it.

Then her eyes narrowed.

“Wait.””

She zoomed in on the image.

There was a reflection in the car window.

Not Antonio.

Someone else.

A second figure.

A man holding something.

Sarah’s face changed.

“Do you recognize him?””

Clara stared.

The image was blurry.

But she knew the shape of the face.

She had seen it before.

In Elena’s photograph.

In her mother’s letters.

In the hidden room.

She whispered:

“That’s my father.””

Sarah looked at her.

“But your father was dead.””

Clara’s heart pounded.

“I thought he was.””

Then Leo, who had been sitting quietly in the back seat, spoke.

“Daddy knows.””

Clara turned.

“What?””

Leo looked at the photograph.

He pointed to Adrian.

“Daddy saw him.””

Sarah frowned.

“When?””

Leo answered with perfect certainty.

“Before Mommy went away.””

Clara looked at the detective.

Rico had known Adrian.

But he had said Adrian was gone.

Now she had proof that he had seen him shortly before Elena's death.

And suddenly the biggest question was no longer who killed Elena.

It was why Rico had hidden the last thing he knew about Clara’s father.
