Chapter 7: The Name Hidden in the Past
Clara Vance stared at the dead phone screen long after the call ended.
The hallway felt colder than it had seconds before.
A photograph was still clutched in her hand.
A photograph that should not exist.
She looked down at the image again.
Her mother.
Elena Moretti.
And a little girl with missing front teeth and messy hair.
Clara.
She remembered that day.
Or at least she thought she did.
A park.
A sunny afternoon.
Her mother laughing.
But there was something wrong.
She had always believed that memory belonged only to her and her mother.
Now Elena Moretti was standing in the background.
Smiling.
Watching.
Clara heard footsteps behind her.
She quickly hid the photograph.
Too late.
Rico stood at the end of the hallway.
His eyes immediately went to her face.
“What happened?””
“Nothing.””
He frowned.
“Clara.””
The way he said her name made lying feel impossible.
She looked away.
“Someone broke into your office.””
His expression changed instantly.
“Are you hurt?””
“No.””
“Where is Leo?””
“Asleep.””
Rico moved past her, checking every corner.
His priorities were obvious.
Not the missing documents.
Not the destroyed office.
His son.
Then he stopped.
He saw the envelope.
The one with Clara’s name.
His jaw tightened.
“Where did you get that?””
“It was on your desk.””
Rico picked it up carefully.
“Don’t touch anything else.””
Clara almost laughed.
“Really? That’s what you’re worried about?””
He looked at her.
“I’m worried about whoever left it.””
The honesty silenced her.
Dante arrived minutes later with two guards.
The entire mansion became a controlled storm.
People searched rooms.
Security reviewed footage.
Phones were checked.
But there was one problem.
The cameras had been disabled.
Whoever entered knew exactly where the blind spots were.
Dante returned to the office.
“Nothing.””
Rico looked up.
“Nothing?””
“No fingerprints. No cameras. No signs of forced entry.””
“That’s impossible.””
Dante nodded.
“Yes.””
He looked uncomfortable.
“Which means whoever did this had access.””
Clara felt a chill.
“Someone inside?””
Nobody answered.
That was the answer.
Later, while Leo slept, Clara sat in the kitchen drinking tea she didn’t want.
Rico entered quietly.
For a moment, they simply sat there.
Two strangers connected by a child and a secret.
“You should leave.””
Clara looked up.
“Excuse me?””
“This isn’t safe.””
“Because someone broke into your house?””
“Because someone is targeting you.””
She looked at him.
“They already targeted my mother.””
Rico went still.
Clara placed the photograph on the table.
“She knew Elena.””
Rico looked at it.
His face changed.
“Where did you find this?””
“Someone left it for me.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
Rico picked up the photo.
His fingers tightened.
“This was taken twenty-six years ago.””
“You know when?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Because Elena kept this picture.””
Clara froze.
“What?””
Rico looked at her.
“She kept it in a box.””
“With my mother?””
“With someone else.””
“Who?””
Rico hesitated.
That hesitation scared her.
“Rico.””
He finally answered.
“Your father.””
The kitchen went silent.
Clara stared at him.
“My father is dead.””
“That’s what you were told.””
Her chair scraped against the floor as she stood.
“No.””
Rico didn’t move.
“Your mother changed your last name when you were six.””
Clara’s face drained.
“How do you know that?””
“Because Elena helped her.””
The pieces started moving.
Not fitting.
Not yet.
But moving.
“My mother never talked about him.””
“Maybe because she was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
Rico looked toward the dark hallway.
“Your father.””
Clara felt anger rising.
“You keep saying things like you know everything.””
“I don’t.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
Rico looked back at her.
“The truth is I don’t know who your father was.””
A pause.
“But Elena did.””
The next morning, Rico made a decision.
He would take Clara to the one person who might know the truth.
Someone who had worked with Elena.
Someone who disappeared after her death.
A former investigator named Michael Hale.
The meeting took place in a small coffee shop outside Brooklyn.
Clara expected a dangerous man.
Instead, she found an exhausted older man with tired eyes.
When he saw Rico, his expression hardened.
“You should have stayed away.””
Rico sat across from him.
“Someone is trying to expose secrets.””
Michael looked at Clara.
Then his face changed.
“Who is she?””
Rico answered:
“Margaret Vance’s daughter.””
The man went pale.
“No.””
Clara leaned forward.
“What?””
Michael looked at her.
“Your mother spent years trying to protect you from the Moretti family.””
Clara’s heart sank.
“Why?””
May you like
Because Michael’s next words changed everything.
“Because your real father was the reason Elena Moretti died.””
