Chapter 9: The Last Recording

The darkness lasted three seconds.

But three seconds is enough time for your imagination to destroy you.

Especially after everything I had learned.

The lights flickered back on.

The house looked exactly the same.

The couch.

The kitchen.

The hallway.

Nothing had changed.

Except me.

Because I no longer knew who was safe.

Ray stood near the window.

“Was that Michael?””

I nodded.

“What did he say?””

I hesitated.

And he noticed.

That hurt.

Because I realized I was beginning to question everyone.

Even him.

“Emma.””

I looked at Ray.

“He told me not to trust you.””

Ray didn’t react.

That bothered me.

“You’re not surprised?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because Michael has been afraid for months.””

I stared.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“Of course you did.””

My voice cracked.

“You know everything.””

Ray looked hurt.

But he accepted it.

“I know pieces.””

“Pieces that everyone keeps from me.””

He nodded.

“That’s fair.””

The agreement disarmed me.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

Ray reached into his jacket.

This time, he didn’t pull out a file.

Or a photograph.

Or evidence.

He pulled out a small memory card.

“This.””

I stared.

“What is it?””

“The final recording.””

My heart stopped.

“Daniel’s video?””

Ray nodded.

“Your husband gave me this the night before he died.””

“Then why didn’t you show me?””

“Because I never watched it.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

Ray looked at the memory card.

“Because Daniel told me the message wasn’t for me.””

A chill moved through me.

“It was for you.””

We connected the card to a laptop.

My hands shook as the screen loaded.

Then Daniel appeared.

Alive.

Smiling.

Sitting in our old kitchen.

The sight broke me.

I covered my mouth.

His voice came through the speakers.

“Hey, Em.””

I started crying immediately.

Not because he looked sick.

Because he looked like Daniel.

My Daniel.

The man who used to steal my fries.

The man who danced terribly.

The man who promised we would grow old together.

“If you’re watching this, then things didn’t go the way I planned.””

He smiled sadly.

“But knowing you, you’re probably angry.””

A broken laugh escaped me.

Because he was right.

Daniel continued.

“I need you to know something first.””

He leaned closer to the camera.

“I never wanted you involved.””

I whispered:

“I know.””

The video continued.

“But I also knew you would find out eventually.””

His expression changed.

“Because you’re not someone who lets people tell you half the story.””

I wiped my tears.

“Daniel…”

He took a breath.

“There are two people you need to protect.””

I froze.

Two?

“Maisie.””

I nodded.

“And yourself.””

The room became silent.

Then Daniel said:

“The person who caused all of this isn’t the person you think.””

I looked at Ray.

He stared at the screen.

Daniel continued.

“Ray is not the danger.””

My breath caught.

“He is the reason Maisie has a future.””

Ray looked away.

The video continued.

“Michael is not the villain either.””

I froze.

My brother.

Daniel’s voice softened.

“He made a terrible choice.””

My heart pounded.

“What choice?””

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“He chose fear over honesty.””

The screen flickered.

Then Daniel said the sentence that changed everything.

“The person behind this is someone I trusted more than anyone outside my family.””

A knock came from the front door.

Everyone froze.

Ray stood.

The video continued playing.

Daniel’s final words echoed through the room.

“Emma, if you’re watching this…”

The knock came again.

Harder.

Ray moved toward the door.

Daniel finished:

“…it means the person who betrayed me has finally realized you know the truth.””

The doorknob slowly turned.

I stopped breathing.

Ray reached for the handle.

May you like

And Daniel’s voice whispered from the laptop:

“Don’t open the door.””
