Chapter 14: The Promise Daniel Finished
I didn’t confront him immediately.
That surprised everyone.
Especially Ray.
But after a year of grief, betrayal, and secrets, I had learned something.
Anger makes people careless.
Daniel had never been careless.
So I wasn’t going to be either.
We made a plan.
Sarah would provide the evidence.
Ray would record everything.
Michael would help because, for once, he wanted to fix what he broke.
And I would do the hardest thing.
I would pretend I still trusted him.
His name was Thomas Reed.
Daniel’s best friend since college.
The man who gave the speech at his funeral.
The man who told everyone Daniel was the kind of person who “made the world better.””
The man who had been standing beside me while secretly destroying everything Daniel built.
When I invited him over, he didn’t hesitate.
That was the first sign.
Guilty people often avoid the places where their lies live.
Thomas walked into my house carrying flowers.
For Maisie.
Of course.
He always knew exactly what to bring.
“How is she?””
I smiled.
“She’s good.””
He looked toward the hallway.
“I’m glad.””
I watched him carefully.
“You always cared about her.””
His expression softened.
“Daniel would have wanted that.””
There it was.
Daniel’s name.
The weapon he always used.
I offered him coffee.
We sat at the kitchen table.
The same table where Daniel filmed his final message.
“I found something,” I said.
Thomas looked up.
“What?””
I placed a folder down.
Not the real evidence.
A copy.
A trap.
“I found documents about Daniel’s investigation.””
For half a second…
Just half a second…
His face changed.
Then it disappeared.
“What kind of documents?””
I noticed.
The fear.
The curiosity.
The calculation.
“You tell me.””
Thomas leaned back.
“Emma, grief can make people see patterns that aren’t there.””
I almost laughed.
Because that was exactly what Linda said.
Exactly what Victor said.
Exactly what everyone who wanted silence said.
“I don’t think I’m imagining things.””
Thomas sighed.
“Daniel always had a problem.””
I stared.
“What problem?””
“He thought he could fix everything.””
My hands tightened.
“That sounds like a compliment.””
“It wasn’t.””
He looked at me.
“Daniel didn’t understand consequences.””
The room went quiet.
“Neither did I,” I said.
Thomas frowned.
“What?””
“I didn’t understand how many people were willing to hurt him.””
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“You know about Michael.””
It wasn’t a question.
It was a confession.
I stayed silent.
Thomas looked toward the window.
“You shouldn’t have found out.””
The words were quiet.
But they were enough.
Ray, hidden in the other room, was recording everything.
I forced myself to stay calm.
“Why?””
Thomas looked at me.
“Because Daniel was going to ruin everything.””
“Your business?””
“My life.””
“By helping children?””
His jaw tightened.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
I leaned forward.
“I understand perfectly.””
Thomas stood.
“You think this is simple.””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“I think you made a choice.””
His face hardened.
“Daniel made his.””
“What does that mean?””
Thomas stared at me.
“He chose strangers over the people who loved him.””
My heart sank.
“You didn’t love him.””
His expression changed.
Anger.
Finally.
The real him appeared.
“I did.””
“Then why did you betray him?””
Silence.
Then he said:
“Because Daniel was going to expose everything.””
I waited.
“And?””
Thomas looked at me.
“And he would have destroyed my family.””
I froze.
“Your family?””
Thomas laughed bitterly.
“You think your mother was the mastermind?””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
He stepped closer.
“Daniel discovered the truth about who started this.””
“Who?””
Thomas looked directly at me.
Then whispered:
“Your father.””
I stopped breathing.
“My father died when I was ten.””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
Thomas shook his head.
“Daniel found records.””
The room felt unreal.
“You’re lying.””
“No.””
He pulled out his phone.
“There’s a reason your mother knew so much.””
I stared.
“Why?””
Thomas’s voice dropped.
“Because she didn’t create the system.””
A pause.
“She inherited it.””
The world tilted.
“And my father?””
Thomas looked at me.
“He created it.””
The words shattered everything I believed about my family.
Then Thomas smiled sadly.
“Daniel discovered the truth.””
I whispered:
“And you killed him?””
Thomas didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
The silence was the answer.
Then the front door opened.
Everyone turned.
Maisie rolled into the room.
And behind her…
Was Ray’s phone.
The recording had stopped.
Thomas looked terrified.
Because he realized one thing.
The person who had just walked in wasn’t supposed to hear anything.
But she had.
And she was holding something.
A small notebook.
Daniel’s notebook.
The one we thought was lost.
Maisie looked at me.
“Mom.””
May you like
Her voice shook.
“I found Daddy’s last page.””
