Chapter 8: The Man Who Saved Me
I didn’t leave Linda’s house immediately.
That was my first mistake.
Because I should have.
Every instinct told me to walk away.
To get Maisie.
To call Ray.
To lock every door.
But curiosity is dangerous.
Especially when grief is involved.
Because grief makes you desperate for answers.
Even when answers hurt.
“Who is protecting me?”” I asked.
Linda looked like she wanted to say something.
Then stopped.
“Emma.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You don’t get to stop now.””
Her eyes filled.
“I’m trying to keep you alive.””
The words should have scared me.
Instead, they made me angry.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I pointed at the document.
“You all keep making decisions for me.””
Linda looked down.
“Because Daniel asked us to.””
My anger disappeared.
“What?””
She sat slowly.
“Before he died, Daniel knew things were getting dangerous.””
I stared.
“Then why didn’t he tell me?””
“Because you were pregnant.””
I froze.
“What?””
Linda looked at me.
“Emma.””
My heart started racing.
“I wasn’t pregnant.””
She looked away.
“You don’t remember?””
A strange pressure built in my chest.
I remembered everything about that year.
The hospital.
The accident.
The funeral.
Maisie.
But pregnancy?
No.
That was impossible.
Linda whispered:
“You lost the baby.””
The room went silent.
I grabbed the edge of the table.
“No.””
“Emma—”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I would remember.””
Linda’s eyes filled with tears.
“You were in the hospital for three days.””
My breathing became shallow.
“Daniel never told me?””
“He wanted to.””
“Then why didn’t he?””
Linda looked at me.
“Because he was afraid you would blame yourself.””
The memory came back.
Not clearly.
Pieces.
A hospital room.
Daniel crying.
A doctor’s voice.
A decision.
And then...
Nothing.
My hand covered my mouth.
I had buried that pain so deeply that I forgot it existed.
Linda continued.
“Daniel discovered the insurance fraud shortly after.””
I looked at her.
“What does that have to do with the baby?””
She hesitated.
Then said:
“Everything.””
When I returned home, Ray was waiting.
One look at my face told him something had happened.
“What did Linda tell you?””
I looked at him.
“You knew about the baby.””
His expression changed.
Slowly.
Painfully.
“Yes.””
The answer broke something in me.
“How many people knew?””
“Not many.””
“But you did.””
“Yes.””
I laughed once.
It wasn’t happiness.
“You knew my husband lost a child with me.””
Ray looked down.
“Daniel told me.””
“And you said nothing?””
“He made me promise.””
I turned away.
“I hate that promise.””
Ray nodded.
“I know.””
For once, he didn’t defend himself.
I sat down.
“Tell me everything.””
Ray was silent.
Then he opened the folder.
“After the miscarriage, Daniel started looking into your insurance claims.””
“Why?””
“Because the denial didn’t make sense.””
He showed me a file.
“Your policy should have covered specialized equipment.””
I stared.
“So why didn’t it?””
“Because someone altered the records.””
I looked up.
“Who?””
Ray placed another document down.
A signature.
Victor Hale.
“He approved the denial.””
My hands shook.
“But Linda said someone was controlling him.””
Ray nodded.
“Victor wasn’t the top.””
“Then who was?””
Ray hesitated.
That scared me more than anything.
“You know the name.””
I waited.
Then he said:
“Michael.””
My brother’s name.
The world stopped.
“No.””
Ray didn’t look away.
“Daniel found financial transfers.””
“No.””
“Emma.””
“My brother raised Maisie.””
“I know.””
“He was there for me.””
“I know.””
“He loved Daniel.””
Ray’s voice softened.
“Maybe he did.””
I stood up.
“You think Michael killed my husband?””
“No.””
The answer came instantly.
I looked at him.
“Then what are you saying?””
Ray looked toward the door.
“He might have helped hide the truth.””
My phone rang.
I looked down.
Michael.
My brother.
The man who had stood between Ray and Maisie.
The man who had protected us.
I answered.
“Hello?””
No response.
“Michael?””
Then I heard breathing.
Heavy.
Afraid.
“Emma.””
My heart tightened.
“What happened?””
His voice shook.
“I need you to listen carefully.””
I stood still.
“Where are you?””
“Don’t come here.””
“Michael—”
“Do not trust Ray.””
I froze.
“What?””
A pause.
Then my brother whispered:
“He knows what Daniel really asked him to do.””
The call ended.
May you like
And seconds later…
The lights in my house went out.
