Chapter 7: The Secret Daniel Left Me

I replayed the phone call twenty-three times.

Not because I didn’t understand the words.

Because I understood them too well.

“Your husband didn’t die because he discovered my secret.””

That sentence had buried itself inside my mind.

The voice belonged to someone I knew.

Someone who had sat across from me at Daniel’s funeral.

Someone who had held my hand while I cried.

Someone who had told me, “If you ever need anything, I’m here.””

And now that same person was telling me my husband had a secret.

I sat in the workshop long after everyone else had left.

The machines were silent.

The lights above me hummed.

In the corner, Maisie’s new wheelchair reflected the ceiling lights like tiny stars.

A dream built from love.

And secrets.

Ray stood near the doorway.

He hadn’t spoken for almost ten minutes.

He was giving me space.

I appreciated that.

But I also hated it.

Because silence meant my thoughts got louder.

“Who knew?”” I finally asked.

Ray looked at me.

“Knew what?””

“That Daniel was hiding something.””

His expression changed.

“Emma.””

“Don’t protect me.””

“I’m not.””

“You are.””

I stood up.

“You all keep doing that.””

Ray stayed quiet.

“My husband. You. Everyone.””

My voice cracked.

“You decided what I could handle.””

Ray looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology stopped me.

I wasn’t expecting it.

Not from him.

Not from the man I had spent weeks judging.

“Daniel never wanted to hurt you,” Ray said.

“But he did.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

Ray nodded slowly.

“I know.””

That was the first time someone admitted it.

Not explained it.

Not defended it.

Just admitted it.

I walked toward the folder on the table.

The payment record was still there.

The name stared back at me.

I picked it up.

“Who is Linda?””

Ray watched me carefully.

“Your sister-in-law?””

I froze.

“You know?””

“Daniel told me.””

My stomach tightened.

Linda.

My husband’s older sister.

The woman who had helped plan Daniel’s funeral.

The woman who brought meals after his death.

The woman who told me she would always treat Maisie like her own daughter.

“No.””

Ray said nothing.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“She loved Daniel.””

Ray walked closer.

“People can love someone and still betray them.””

I hated that answer.

Because it sounded true.

That afternoon, I went to Linda’s house.

Alone.

I didn’t tell Ray.

I didn’t tell Michael.

I didn’t tell anyone.

Because I needed to know if I was about to destroy a relationship based on fear.

Linda opened the door wearing a warm sweater and a surprised smile.

“Emma?””

She looked past me.

“Is everything okay?””

I forced myself to smile.

“Can I come in?””

Her expression changed.

“Of course.””

The house smelled like cinnamon.

Exactly like it always did.

That almost made it harder.

Because evil people were supposed to look evil.

They weren’t supposed to offer you tea.

They weren’t supposed to ask about your daughter.

They weren’t supposed to hug you after your husband died.

Linda poured two cups.

“You look exhausted.””

I stared at her.

“I found something.””

Her hand stopped.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

A tiny hesitation.

“What did you find?””

I placed the payment record on the table.

Her face changed.

Not shock.

Recognition.

That was enough.

“Where did you get this?””

My heart sank.

“You know what it is.””

She looked away.

“Emma.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“Don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Act like I’m confused.””

Linda closed her eyes.

“Daniel told you.””

“He told Ray.””

The silence was immediate.

Her eyes opened.

“Ray?””

I nodded.

“Your brother-in-law?””

“No.””

“Then who?””

The question sounded genuine.

Too genuine.

“You know exactly who.””

Linda stood up.

“Emma, you need to leave.””

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

“Because you don’t understand what you’re looking at.””

“Then explain it.””

She looked at the document.

Then at me.

“Daniel was sick.””

I went still.

“What?””

“He wasn’t thinking clearly near the end.””

I stared.

“You’re saying my husband was crazy?””

“No.””

“Then what are you saying?””

Linda’s eyes filled.

“I’m saying Daniel became obsessed.””

The anger came fast.

“He wanted to help children.””

“He wanted to destroy people.””

My breath caught.

“What?””

Linda looked toward the window.

“He found something wrong and decided he had to fix everything.””

“That sounds like Daniel.””

“No.””

Her voice sharpened.

“That sounds like a man who didn’t understand the consequences.””

I stepped back.

“Did you know?””

She didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

“You knew.””

Linda whispered:

“I tried to stop him.””

My heart pounded.

“Stop him from what?””

She looked at me.

“From exposing the truth.””

The room went cold.

“Why?””

She didn’t speak.

Then her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face went pale.

She declined the call.

But a second later, her phone buzzed again.

A message.

I saw the preview.

*You failed to keep her away.*

Linda looked terrified.

Not guilty.

Terrified.

I stood there, staring at her.

“Who sent that?””

She didn’t answer.

“Linda.””

Her lips trembled.

“Emma, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

She looked at me.

“Daniel wasn’t investigating the insurance company.””

I felt the floor disappear.

“What?””

“He was investigating the person controlling it.””

My hands went cold.

“Who?””

Linda looked toward the locked drawer beside her desk.

May you like

Then she whispered:

“The person who has been protecting you since the day Daniel died.””
