Chapter 11: The Message For Maisie

The screen flickered.

Then Daniel appeared again.

But this time, he wasn’t sitting in our kitchen.

He was sitting in the workshop.

The same workshop Ray had built from his dream.

The same place filled with drawings from children who needed someone to believe in them.

Daniel looked tired.

But happy.

And behind him was a small purple wheelchair.

Not Maisie’s final chair.

The first version.

The beginning.

I sat down slowly.

Michael stood behind me.

Ray stayed silent.

Daniel smiled at the camera.

“Hey, princess.””

My heart broke.

Because he wasn’t talking to me.

He was talking to her.

“Maisie, if you’re watching this, it means you finally got the chair you designed.””

My daughter’s face appeared in my mind.

Her excitement.

Her smile.

Her little hands touching every detail.

Daniel continued.

“I know you probably asked a thousand questions.””

A small laugh escaped me.

“That’s your mother’s fault.””

Even after everything…

He could still make me smile.

Daniel looked down.

“I need you to remember something.””

His voice softened.

“Your chair doesn’t make you special.””

I frowned.

Then he continued.

“You were special before you ever sat in it.””

My eyes filled.

“People will try to convince you that needing help means you’re weak.””

He shook his head.

“Don’t believe them.””

He touched the wheel beside him.

“Every machine in the world exists because humans needed help doing something.””

A pause.

“Cars help us travel.””

“Phones help us connect.””

“Your chair helps you move.””

His smile returned.

“None of those things are weaknesses.””

Maisie appeared in the doorway.

She had been listening.

I didn’t notice her enter.

She rolled closer.

“Daddy…”

The word came out like a whisper.

Daniel continued.

“I also need you to know something about Ray.””

Ray looked away.

“He is going to pretend he doesn’t care.””

A small smile appeared.

“But he does.””

For the first time, Ray looked emotional.

“More than almost anyone I know.””

Daniel leaned toward the camera.

“Ray promised me something.””

My heart tightened.

“What?””

Daniel answered himself.

“He promised me he would teach you to build.””

Maisie touched the screen.

“I remember.””

Daniel smiled.

“Good.””

Then his expression changed.

The happiness faded.

“Now, the hard part.””

The room became still.

“Maisie, there are people in this world who forget that every number represents a person.””

He looked serious.

“They will tell you that money matters more than people.””

He shook his head.

“They’re wrong.””

The video paused.

Then Daniel said:

“Your mother will probably blame herself.””

I froze.

“What?””

Daniel looked directly at the camera.

“Emma, if you are watching this too…”

My breath caught.

“Listen carefully.””

His voice became softer.

“You did not fail us.””

I covered my mouth.

“You fought every day.””

Tears fell.

“You were there when I couldn’t be.””

Daniel looked back at Maisie.

“That was the greatest gift anyone ever gave me.””

I couldn’t breathe.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

“Now I need you both to do something for me.””

The screen went dark for a second.

Then another file appeared.

A document.

A video.

A list.

Daniel’s final evidence.

Michael stepped closer.

“Is that everything?””

Ray shook his head.

“No.””

We looked at him.

“How do you know?””

“Because Daniel told me.””

“What?””

Ray looked at the screen.

“He said the evidence was never the weapon.””

I frowned.

“Then what was?””

Ray answered quietly:

“The people.””

I didn’t understand.

Then Daniel’s final message continued.

“There is one person who can prove everything.””

The video showed a name.

A name that made Michael’s face change.

Because he knew it.

Ray knew it.

And I had never heard it before.

Daniel said:

“If you find this person, you’ll understand why I couldn’t tell you the truth.””

The name appeared.

*Sarah Whitmore.*

I looked at Michael.

“Who is Sarah?””

Nobody answered.

Then Michael whispered:

“She was Mom’s assistant.””

My stomach tightened.

“And?””

May you like

Michael looked terrified.

“And she disappeared the night Daniel died.””
