Chapter 5: The Room Behind the Wall
The old house looked smaller.
That was the first thing I noticed.
Maybe because I was different.
Maybe because grief makes everything look larger when you’re trapped inside it.
The front porch where Daniel used to drink coffee.
The driveway where Maisie learned to ride her first little bicycle.
The window where I stood the night the ambulance took him away.
Everything looked exactly the same.
And somehow completely wrong.
The new owners weren’t home.
Ray had arranged for us to enter through a contact who managed the property.
I hated that.
I hated walking through a house that no longer belonged to me.
But Daniel had left something here.
Something important.
Something worth breaking every rule for.
“Are you sure about this?”” I asked.
Ray stood behind me.
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Because I knew Daniel.””
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because I was tired of hearing that.
Everyone seemed to know my husband better than I did.
Ray noticed my expression.
“Emma.””
I looked at him.
“He loved you.””
The simple sentence silenced me.
Ray continued.
“But he also knew you avoided places that hurt.””
My eyes moved through the hallway.
The photos were gone.
The furniture was different.
The walls had been painted.
But I still saw us.
Daniel carrying Maisie down the stairs.
Daniel cooking breakfast on Sundays.
Daniel dancing badly in the kitchen just to make our daughter laugh.
I swallowed.
“Where would he hide something?””
Ray looked around.
“Somewhere nobody would search.””
“That doesn’t help.””
“Yes, it does.””
He walked toward the hallway.
“Daniel wasn’t sentimental about objects.””
I followed.
“He cared about meaning.””
We stopped outside Maisie’s old bedroom.
My chest tightened.
The room had been painted blue by the new owners.
But I remembered the old color.
Pink.
Princess pink.
The color Maisie chose when she was three.
I touched the doorframe.
“This was her room.””
Ray nodded.
“And Daniel spent three weeks fixing this wall.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Before he died.””
I looked at him.
“He never told me that.””
“Exactly.””
Ray stepped inside.
He ran his hand along the wall.
Then stopped.
“Here.””
I stared.
“At what?””
“This.””
He pressed against a section of the wall.
Nothing happened.
Then he pushed harder.
A small panel moved.
I stopped breathing.
Behind the wall was a narrow compartment.
Inside was a box.
Not a wooden box.
A metal one.
My hands shook as I pulled it out.
On top was a note.
My name.
Emma.
I opened it.
If you found this, Ray kept his promise.
I looked at him.
“He knew.””
Ray nodded.
“He knew I would come.””
Inside the box were files.
A small camera.
And a letter.
I picked up the letter first.
Emma,
I’m sorry.
The words blurred instantly.
I sat down.
I wanted to tell you everything.
I wanted to sit with you and explain why I was scared.
But fear wasn’t for me.
It was for you and Maisie.
I pressed the letter against my chest.
The person responsible knows I found out.
My breathing stopped.
If something happens to me, don’t believe the first story you hear.
I closed my eyes.
Because I had believed the first story.
The accident.
The rain.
The road.
Everything.
Trust Ray.
I looked at him.
He may look like someone who breaks things.
But he is the kind of man who spends his life fixing what others destroy.
A tear slipped down my face.
Daniel knew.
He knew exactly who Ray was.
Then I reached the final line.
And my blood turned cold.
But there is one person I never told you about.
I turned the page.
Nothing.
The rest was blank.
“Why would he stop there?””
Ray looked at the letter.
“I don’t know.””
Then the camera beside me suddenly caught my attention.
“Is that the video?””
Ray picked it up.
“No.””
“Then what is it?””
He turned it over.
A small red light blinked.
My stomach dropped.
“It’s not a camera.””
“What is it?””
Ray looked toward the window.
His face changed.
“It’s a tracker.””
The realization hit me.
Someone had been watching.
Someone knew we were here.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
*You should have left Daniel’s secrets buried.*
I looked at Ray.
He was already reaching for the door.
But before he opened it, another message arrived.
This time, it included a photo.
A photo taken moments ago.
Of us standing inside the room.
My hands went cold.
Because the person watching us wasn’t outside.
They were close.
Very close.
And then Ray whispered:
“Emma…”
May you like
I looked at him.
“Your daughter is not the only thing Daniel was trying to protect.””
