Chapter 9: The Night Everything Changed
The drive to Thomas’s private home was silent.
Emily sat in the passenger seat, staring out the window.
The message remained on her phone.
*Your father didn’t die naturally.*
Every time she read it, her chest tightened.
Her father had died when she was sixteen.
A heart attack.
That was what everyone told her.
That was what she believed.
But Thomas’s reaction told her something was missing.
Something enormous.
When they arrived, Thomas didn’t immediately enter the house.
He stood outside beneath the porch light.
The same old man who had calmly faced humiliation in a jewelry store now looked like someone carrying a heavy secret.
“Tell me,” Emily said.
Thomas closed his eyes.
“I was hoping you would never have to know.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He nodded.
“You’re right.””
They entered the house.
Thomas walked to an old wooden cabinet and removed a small box.
Inside were documents.
Photographs.
Letters.
Memories from another life.
He handed Emily an old newspaper clipping.
She read the headline.
*Local Jewelry Founder Dies Suddenly at 48.*
Her hands shook.
“That’s my father.””
Thomas nodded.
“Look at the date.””
She did.
Then she noticed.
The day after the company’s biggest financial crisis.
“What happened?””
Thomas sat down.
“Your father discovered something.””
“What?””
“Your father found proof that Robert Hale had been stealing company funds.””
Emily looked up.
“Richard’s father.””
“Yes.””
Thomas continued.
“Michael wanted to report him.””
“Then why didn’t he?””
Thomas looked away.
“Because Robert threatened him.””
Emily felt cold.
“Threatened him with what?””
Thomas was silent.
Then he said:
“You.””
The room became still.
Emily covered her mouth.
“My father was protecting me?””
“Yes.””
Thomas’s voice broke slightly.
“Your father loved you more than anything.””
Emily looked at the documents.
“So Robert killed him?””
Thomas didn’t answer.
That silence was painful.
Finally, he spoke.
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
Thomas looked at her.
“I know your father was afraid.””
Emily stared.
“What does that mean?””
“The night before he died, he came to my house.””
Thomas looked at the floor.
“He told me something was wrong.””
“What did he say?””
Thomas’s voice became quiet.
“He said, ‘If anything happens to me, don’t let them turn my daughter into a weapon.’”
Emily felt tears fall.
Her father’s final thoughts weren’t about money.
Not about the company.
About her.
“What happened after that?””
Thomas looked at the box.
“The next morning, he was gone.””
“Gone?””
“I found out later he had driven home alone.””
Emily waited.
“And then?””
“He had the heart attack.””
She looked confused.
“But you said you didn’t know if it was natural.””
Thomas nodded.
“Because there were signs.””
“What signs?””
“The police report showed something strange.””
“What?””
Thomas handed her another document.
Emily read it.
Her eyes widened.
“Someone was in the car?””
Thomas nodded.
“An unknown fingerprint.””
The room felt colder.
“Why didn’t anyone investigate?””
Thomas looked ashamed.
“Because powerful people can make uncomfortable questions disappear.””
Emily stood.
“Who knew?””
Thomas looked at her.
“Three people.””
“Who?””
“Me.””
He paused.
“Robert Hale.””
Another pause.
“And Richard.””
Emily felt anger rising.
“Richard knew?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did he say my father was a failure?””
Thomas’s expression hardened.
“Because hatred is easier than guilt.””
Emily looked at the box.
Inside was another envelope.
Her name was written on it.
Again.
She picked it up.
“Is this from my father?””
Thomas nodded.
“He gave it to me the night before he died.””
Emily looked at him.
“Why didn’t you give it to me?””
Thomas looked away.
“Because he asked me not to.””
She froze.
“What?””
“He told me to keep it until the day you were ready.””
Emily opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Her father’s.
The first line made her stop breathing.
*My dear Emily, if you are reading this, then I am no longer able to protect you myself.*
She continued reading.
Then she reached the final paragraph.
Her father had written a warning.
A warning about Richard Hale.
May you like
And one final secret.
A secret that revealed Richard was not the only person responsible for what happened twenty-five years ago.
