Chapter 6: The Forgotten Promise

Emily didn’t sleep.

The photograph sat on her kitchen table all night.

She stared at it until the morning sunlight entered through the window.

Her father.

Thomas Whitmore.

And a stranger standing between them.

A stranger who looked angry.

A stranger who looked familiar.

By 7 a.m., Emily was back at Sterling & Crown.

She found Thomas in his private office.

He was reading documents beside a window overlooking the city.

When he saw her face, he immediately knew something was wrong.

“What happened?””

Emily placed the photograph on his desk.

Thomas stopped breathing for a moment.

His fingers touched the old image.

“Where did you get this?””

“It was left outside my apartment.””

Thomas looked at the stranger.

His expression changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“Who is he?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

Emily stepped closer.

“Mr. Whitmore.””

He slowly sat down.

“That is Robert Hale.””

Emily felt a chill.

“Richard’s father?””

Thomas nodded.

“But he disappeared years ago.””

“Disappeared?””

Thomas looked at the photograph.

“After a betrayal.””

Emily waited.

She knew there was more.

Thomas sighed.

“Robert was my business partner.””

The room became quiet.

“Before Sterling & Crown became what it is today, there were three of us.””

“Three?””

“Yes.””

“Who were the others?””

Thomas looked at the photograph.

“Me. Your father. And Robert Hale.””

Emily stared.

“My father was a partner?””

Thomas nodded.

“Not just an employee.””

She sat down.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

“Because your father wanted to protect you.””

“From what?””

Thomas’s eyes became darker.

“From the truth about what happened.””

Emily felt her heart race.

“What happened?””

Thomas leaned back.

“Robert believed the company belonged to him.””

“But it didn’t?””

“No.””

Thomas looked at her.

“Your father and I built it together.””

Emily looked at the photograph again.

“So Richard knew?””

Thomas nodded.

“He grew up hearing a different version of the story.””

The pieces began connecting.

The changed records.

The hidden files.

The resentment.

“He’s trying to take revenge.””

Thomas didn’t respond.

And his silence was an answer.

Emily stood.

“What did my father do to Robert?””

Thomas looked hurt.

“Nothing.””

“Then why would Robert hate him?””

Thomas looked out the window.

“Because sometimes people hate those who remind them of what they failed to become.””

Emily was quiet.

Then she asked:

“Why didn’t you tell me all of this before?””

Thomas smiled sadly.

“Because I wanted to know if you were loyal to the company because of your father.””

Emily looked confused.

“What do you mean?””

“I needed to know if you would choose the right thing even when nobody knew your name.””

She understood.

The watch.

The store.

The test.

Everything had a reason.

But then Thomas opened another folder.

“This is why you need to see this.””

Inside was a legal document.

Emily read the title.

Her eyes widened.

“This is a succession agreement.””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

Her hands trembled.

“Why am I seeing this?””

Thomas looked directly at her.

“Because your father left something behind.””

“What?””

Thomas pointed to the signature at the bottom.

Michael Carter.

Emily’s breath stopped.

“My father signed this?””

“Yes.””

“What does it say?””

Thomas was silent for a moment.

Then he said:

“Your father named the person he believed should protect Sterling & Crown after me.””

Emily looked at him.

“And who was it?””

Thomas pushed the document toward her.

Emily read the final line.

Her entire world shifted.

Because the person her father chose was not Thomas.

It wasn’t Daniel.

It wasn’t any executive.

It was someone she never expected.

May you like

Someone who had been standing in front of her the entire time.

And suddenly, Emily understood why Richard Hale was so afraid of her. :::
