Chapter 13: The Man Behind the Secret
Emily did not sleep that night.
The photograph sat on Thomas’s desk between them.
A single image.
A single moment.
A moment that had the power to destroy everything they believed.
Daniel stood in the background of the photograph.
Near her father’s car.
On the night he died.
Emily stared at it again.
“Maybe there’s an explanation.””
Thomas looked at her.
“You still believe that?””
She swallowed.
“I don’t know what I believe anymore.””
For the first time in days, Thomas looked old.
Not weak.
Just tired.
Twenty-five years of secrets had finally caught up with him.
“I trusted Daniel,” he said quietly.
Emily looked at him.
“So did my father.””
That sentence hurt them both.
The next morning, they found Daniel before he could leave the building.
He was standing in the parking garage, holding a suitcase.
Emily stopped when she saw him.
“Leaving?””
Daniel froze.
His face changed.
Not surprise.
Guilt.
Thomas walked forward.
“Explain.””
Daniel looked at the two people in front of him.
The people who had trusted him.
The people he had failed.
“I knew this day would come.””
Emily felt anger rising.
“Then why didn’t you tell us?””
Daniel looked down.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
He looked at Thomas.
“Losing everything.””
Emily shook her head.
“You already lost it.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I know.””
Thomas’s voice was quiet.
“Were you there that night?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Emily felt her chest tighten.
“My father trusted you.””
Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
Her voice broke.
“You don’t know what it’s like to lose someone and spend your whole life believing it was just bad luck.””
Daniel looked away.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Daniel finally looked at her.
“Because the person who caused your father’s death was still powerful.””
Emily froze.
“What?””
Thomas stepped forward.
“Who?””
Daniel looked around.
Then lowered his voice.
“Not here.””
They moved to a private conference room.
Daniel placed the suitcase on the table.
Inside were files.
Photographs.
Old records.
“I kept copies.””
Thomas stared.
“Of everything?””
Daniel nodded.
“The night Michael died, I realized the company was in danger.””
Emily looked at the files.
“Why?””
Daniel opened one.
Inside were transactions connecting Robert Hale to another person.
But the name was covered.
“Because Robert wasn’t the mastermind.””
Thomas looked shocked.
“Then who was?””
Daniel hesitated.
“I never knew the full name.””
Emily frowned.
“What?””
Daniel pointed to the documents.
“Robert called this person ‘the architect.’”
The room went silent.
“The architect?””
Daniel nodded.
“He was the one planning everything.””
Emily looked at the covered name.
“Can we uncover it?””
Daniel slowly removed the paper covering the signature.
Thomas’s face changed.
“No.””
Emily looked at him.
“You know this person?””
Thomas stared at the signature.
His voice barely came out.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Thomas looked at Emily.
And the answer destroyed the last piece of certainty she had.
“It was my own brother.””
Emily froze.
“Your brother?””
Thomas nodded.
“Jonathan Whitmore.””
Daniel continued.
“He believed Sterling & Crown should have belonged to him.””
Emily stepped back.
“So Robert was just a partner.””
“Yes.””
“And Richard spent his entire life blaming the wrong people.””
Daniel nodded.
Thomas sat down.
“My brother betrayed me.””
The pain in his voice was impossible to ignore.
Emily finally understood.
The enemy was never outside the company.
The enemy had been family.
Then Daniel pulled out one final document.
“This is the reason I stayed silent.””
Emily looked at it.
A legal agreement.
Signed by Jonathan.
“What is this?””
Daniel answered:
“A confession.””
Thomas grabbed the paper.
His hands shook.
At the bottom was a signature.
And beneath it was a date.
The day before Michael Carter died.
Emily looked at Thomas.
“What does it say?””
Thomas read the first line.
Then his face went pale.
Because the confession revealed something impossible.
Jonathan Whitmore had not acted alone.
Someone had helped him.
Someone still alive.
May you like
Someone inside the company.
And that person was closer than anyone realized.
