Chapter 11: The Betrayal Nobody Saw

Nobody spoke.

Not even Richard.

Margaret slowly removed the first document from the file.

Her hands shook.

“I have carried this for twenty-five years,” she said.

Thomas looked devastated.

“Margaret, why didn’t you tell me?””

She looked at him.

“Because Michael asked me not to.””

Emily stepped closer.

“Why would he trust you?””

Margaret looked at the young woman.

“Because I was the only person he believed had nothing to gain.””

She placed the document on the table.

Emily looked down.

A list of transactions.

Names.

Dates.

Signatures.

Then she saw it.

A signature she recognized.

Not Richard.

Not Robert.

Someone else.

Someone from inside Sterling & Crown.

Someone who had spent years pretending to protect the company.

Daniel.

Her eyes widened.

“No.””

Daniel immediately stood.

“Emily, wait.””

Everyone turned toward him.

Thomas looked shocked.

“Daniel?””

Margaret closed her eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

Emily stared.

“You?””

Daniel looked defeated.

“Let me explain.””

Richard suddenly laughed.

A cold, bitter laugh.

“So that’s the truth.””

Everyone looked at him.

Richard smiled.

“All this time, everyone blamed my father.””

Daniel’s face became pale.

“Richard, stop.””

“No.””

Richard stepped forward.

“I want everyone to hear this.””

Emily felt sick.

“Daniel, what did you do?””

Daniel looked at Thomas.

“I never wanted this.””

Thomas’s voice was quiet.

“Then why?””

Daniel looked down.

“My father was dying.””

Silence.

“He owed money to Robert Hale.””

Emily frowned.

“What?””

Daniel nodded.

“Robert threatened my family.””

Richard looked confused.

“My father threatened you?””

“Yes.””

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“He forced me to help hide certain records.””

Thomas stared.

“But you stayed.””

Daniel nodded.

“I was young. I was scared.””

Emily looked at him.

“You let my father’s name be destroyed.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I know.””

The answer hurt more than an excuse.

Because it was true.

He knew.

For twenty-five years, he knew.

Thomas slowly sat down.

“I trusted you.””

Daniel looked broken.

“I know.””

Richard looked at Daniel with disgust.

“You’re the reason my father was exposed.””

Daniel looked at him.

“No.””

He shook his head.

“Your father was exposed because he did what he did.””

Richard’s expression darkened.

“You don’t get to say that.””

The room became filled with years of anger.

Emily looked between them.

Everyone had been carrying secrets.

Everyone had been hurt.

But the truth was finally coming out.

Thomas turned toward Daniel.

“Did Michael know?””

Daniel froze.

A painful silence followed.

Emily noticed.

“Did my father know you were involved?””

Daniel whispered:

“Yes.””

Her heart sank.

“How?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Because I confessed.””

Emily stared.

“When?””

“The night before he died.””

The room went completely silent.

“What did he say?””

Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.

“He forgave me.””

Emily couldn’t move.

Her father knew.

He knew someone had betrayed him.

And he still chose forgiveness.

Daniel continued.

“He told me I had one chance.””

“To do what?””

“To protect his daughter.””

Emily covered her mouth.

The anger inside her became complicated.

Because the man she wanted to hate had also been trying to help her.

Thomas looked at Daniel.

“Then why hide the truth?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Because I failed.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Margaret opened another document.

“There is still more.””

Everyone looked at her.

She pulled out an old recording device.

Emily frowned.

“What is that?””

“Your father’s final recording.””

Thomas stood.

“Michael recorded something?””

Margaret nodded.

“He knew he might not survive.””

She pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice appeared.

A voice Emily hadn’t heard in twenty-five years.

Her father.

“If you are hearing this, something has happened to me.””

Emily immediately started crying.

The room disappeared.

It was just his voice.

Her father.

“First, I want Emily to know one thing.””

She held her breath.

“You were always my greatest achievement.””

The recording continued.

“I don’t know who will betray me. I don’t know who will survive this.””

A pause.

“But I know this.””

His voice became serious.

“The person who destroyed my family is not the person everyone suspects.””

Emily looked at Thomas.

Then Richard.

Then Daniel.

Her father continued.

“The person responsible is someone who has spent years pretending to protect Sterling & Crown.””

The recording stopped.

Everyone froze.

Because the next part was missing.

The final piece.

The identity.

The truth.

Margaret looked at the device.

“The rest of the recording was stolen.””

Emily felt a chill.

“By who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Thomas’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed instantly.

“What is it?”” Emily asked.

Thomas slowly lowered the phone.

“The missing recording.””

Everyone stared.

“Someone just sent it to me.””

Emily stepped forward.

“Who?””

Thomas looked at the unknown number.

May you like

And whispered:

“The person who sent it says they are the only one who knows who killed your father.””
