Chapter 10: The Letter My Father Hid
Emily read the letter three times before she believed the words.
The paper trembled between her fingers.
Her father’s handwriting was familiar.
The same handwriting that had signed birthday cards, school notes, and the recipe book he left behind.
But the message was nothing like the memories she carried.
It was a warning.
A final attempt from a father who knew he might not have another chance.
She whispered the words aloud.
“‘Emily, never trust someone only because they stand beside you.’”
Thomas sat across from her.
He didn’t interrupt.
He knew this moment belonged to her.
She continued reading.
“‘There are people who smile while holding a knife behind their back. The most dangerous ones are not strangers. They are the ones who know your dreams.’”
Emily stopped.
Her eyes moved toward Thomas.
“Who was he talking about?””
Thomas looked at the letter.
“You already know.””
“Richard.””
Thomas nodded slowly.
Emily continued.
“‘If Thomas gives you this letter one day, it means he believes you are strong enough to know the truth. Do not seek revenge. Seek justice. Revenge destroys the person holding it.’”
Her father’s words felt like a hand reaching through time.
A reminder.
A lesson.
A goodbye.
But then she reached the final paragraph.
And everything changed.
“‘There is one more person you must be careful with. Someone who helped Robert hide the truth.’”
Emily froze.
Someone else?
She read the sentence again.
Her heart began racing.
“‘I never believed this person was evil. That was my mistake.’”
She looked up.
“Who?””
Thomas’s face became serious.
“I don’t know.””
Emily stared at him.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
“But my father knew.””
Thomas nodded.
“He never wrote the name.””
“Why?””
“Because he was afraid the letter could be found.””
Emily looked down.
The mystery had become bigger.
For twenty-five years, everyone had believed the story was simple.
Robert Hale was the enemy.
Richard wanted revenge.
But now there was another person.
Someone hidden.
Someone trusted.
Someone close enough to betray them.
The next morning, Thomas called an emergency meeting with the board.
The atmosphere was different.
Before, Emily had walked into that room feeling like an outsider.
Now, she walked in carrying her father’s truth.
Richard was already there.
He looked calm.
Almost too calm.
When he saw Emily, he smiled.
“I suppose you learned some interesting family stories.””
Emily ignored the comment.
Thomas placed a folder on the table.
“We need to discuss historical records involving the company’s founding.””
Richard leaned back.
“Are we really reopening old wounds?””
Emily looked at him.
“Some wounds never closed.””
Richard’s smile faded.
The board members watched carefully.
Daniel presented the evidence.
Old financial records.
Missing transactions.
Hidden accounts.
Connections between Robert Hale and several secret transfers.
For the first time, Richard looked uncomfortable.
“This proves nothing,” he said.
Daniel replied calmly.
“It proves your father stole from the company.””
Richard slammed his hand on the table.
“My father was framed.””
Thomas looked at him.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“But you were taught to believe that.””
Richard stood.
“You expect me to believe you after all these years?””
Thomas stared back.
“I expect you to face the truth.””
Richard laughed bitterly.
“You destroyed my family.””
Emily watched him carefully.
There was anger in his voice.
But beneath it was something else.
Pain.
A pain that had been passed from father to son.
Richard continued.
“My father lost everything.””
Thomas shook his head.
“Your father made choices.””
Richard pointed at Emily.
“And now you’re doing the same thing.””
Emily frowned.
“What?””
“Using a dead man’s daughter to control the company.””
The accusation shocked everyone.
But Emily didn’t react.
Instead, she asked:
“Richard, if you truly believe my father was guilty, why are you afraid of this letter?””
His expression changed.
Only for a second.
But it was enough.
Emily noticed.
“You know about it.””
Richard said nothing.
“You knew my father left something behind.””
Silence.
Thomas looked at him.
“How?””
Richard looked away.
That was his answer.
Before anyone could continue, the boardroom doors opened.
A woman entered.
Everyone turned.
She was older, dressed professionally, and carried a thick file.
Thomas immediately stood.
“Margaret?””
The woman looked at him sadly.
“I’m sorry, Thomas.””
Emily noticed the fear in his eyes.
“What’s happening?””
Margaret placed the file on the table.
“I kept this hidden for twenty-five years.””
Everyone froze.
Thomas whispered:
“Why?””
Margaret looked at Emily.
“Because your father asked me to.””
Emily stepped forward.
“My father?””
Margaret nodded.
“He gave me copies of documents the night before he died.””
Richard’s face changed.
“What documents?””
Margaret looked directly at him.
“The ones proving Robert Hale was not acting alone.””
The room went silent.
Emily’s heart pounded.
The hidden person.
The unknown partner.
The truth her father died protecting.
Margaret opened the file.
Then she revealed a name.
May you like
A name nobody expected.
And the entire room went quiet.
