Chapter 8: The Lie Hidden in the Records
Richard’s words hung in the air.
“Michael Carter made a mistake.””
Emily felt every person at the table turn toward her.
She looked at Thomas.
He remained silent.
That scared her.
“Explain,” one board member said.
Richard opened the folder.
“Twenty-five years ago, before Sterling & Crown became the company you know today, Michael Carter made a financial decision that nearly destroyed the business.””
Whispers moved around the room.
Emily shook her head.
“That’s not true.””
Richard looked at her.
“You weren’t there.””
“No,” she said.
“But my father would never do that.””
Richard smiled.
“That’s exactly why this works.””
Emily frowned.
“What?””
“You remember him as a good man.””
He lifted the papers.
“But good men can still make bad choices.””
Thomas finally spoke.
“Enough.””
Richard turned.
“Why? Because the truth is uncomfortable?””
Thomas’s voice became colder.
“The truth is not what you’re showing them.””
Richard laughed.
“Then prove it.””
The room went silent.
Emily looked between them.
She could feel decades of history sitting in that room.
History nobody had told her.
Richard continued.
“My father, Robert Hale, was forced out because Michael Carter and Thomas Whitmore blamed him for financial problems.””
Thomas’s expression changed.
“Your father was removed because he stole from the company.””
The room exploded with whispers.
Richard’s face hardened.
“That is a lie.””
Thomas looked at him.
“No.””
He pointed at the folder.
“The original records are in there.””
Richard’s confidence disappeared for a moment.
Only for a moment.
Then he smiled.
“Interesting.””
Emily noticed.
He wasn’t surprised.
He knew what was inside.
Richard turned back to the board.
“This is why emotions cannot lead this company.””
He looked at Emily.
“She inherited a name. Nothing more.””
The words hurt.
Not because they were cruel.
Because a small part of Emily feared they were true.
She had spent years believing she wasn’t special.
That she was just an ordinary employee.
Now everyone expected her to carry a legacy.
What if she wasn’t enough?
Thomas noticed her expression.
He leaned closer.
“Look at me.””
She did.
“Do you know why Richard wants you to doubt yourself?””
Emily shook her head.
“Because people who know their worth are difficult to control.””
The words gave her strength.
She stood.
The entire room became quiet.
“Richard.””
He looked at her.
“Yes?””
“I have a question.””
“Go ahead.””
“If my father was such a failure, why did you spend years trying to erase his name?””
Richard’s expression changed.
“What?””
“You changed my records.””
She looked around the room.
“You manipulated employee reviews. You hid information. You tried to make me look unqualified.””
Richard laughed.
“You have no proof.””
Emily smiled slightly.
“Actually, I do.””
She turned toward Daniel.
He placed a small device on the table.
Richard’s face changed.
“What is that?””
Daniel answered.
“An audio recording.””
The room became silent.
Emily looked at Richard.
“Your conversation yesterday.””
Richard’s jaw tightened.
The recording played.
His own voice filled the room.
“I told you she was perfect for the role. She’s emotional. Easy to manipulate.””
Board members stared.
Richard looked furious.
“You recorded me?””
“No,” Emily said.
“You forgot the security system records audio in executive offices during legal investigations.””
A few board members exchanged looks.
Richard’s confidence began cracking.
Thomas leaned back.
“You made one mistake.””
Richard glared.
“What?””
“You underestimated her.””
The words were simple.
But they carried weight.
Richard looked at Emily.
“You think winning one meeting changes everything?””
Emily didn’t answer.
Because she knew he was right.
This wasn’t over.
Richard had spent years building his plan.
A single recording wouldn’t erase everything.
The board members continued reviewing documents.
After two hours, the decision was postponed.
Richard left the room without saying another word.
Emily thought it was over.
Until she received a message on her phone.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
*Your father didn’t die naturally.*
Her heart stopped.
Another message appeared.
*Ask Thomas what really happened that night.*
Emily looked up.
Thomas was speaking quietly with Daniel.
But when he saw her face, he immediately knew something had happened.
“What is it?””
Emily slowly showed him the phone.
Thomas read the message.
And all the color disappeared from his face.
May you like
Because he knew exactly who sent it.
And he knew the secret he had spent twenty-five years protecting was finally coming back.
