Chapter 9: The Price of Silence
Preston backed into the table.
A water glass tipped over.
Nobody reached for it.
"No.""
Diane stepped toward him.
"Preston, listen to me.""
"Don't touch me.""
She stopped.
He looked at Charles.
"Dad?""
Charles couldn't speak.
"Dad, say something.""
Charles's face had gone gray.
Finally, he whispered, "I didn't know.""
Preston looked at his mother again.
"You lied to me my entire life?""
"I was trying to protect you.""
"From what?""
"Michael.""
The name came out almost as a whisper.
Preston laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
"You just said he's my father.""
"That doesn't mean he's a good man.""
Charles suddenly found his voice.
"You let me raise his son.""
Diane turned on him.
"You wanted a family.""
"Don't you dare.""
"You couldn't have children.""
Charles flinched.
The cruelty was so precise that even Richard looked shocked.
Preston shouted, "Stop!""
Everyone fell silent.
He was crying now.
Not dramatically.
Tears simply ran down his face while he stood there looking at two people who had just destroyed his understanding of his own life.
"Did Michael know about me?""
Diane hesitated.
That was enough.
"He knew.""
"Did he ever meet me?""
"No.""
"Did he want to?""
Diane's mouth tightened.
"Preston—"
"Did he?""
"Yes.""
Preston turned away.
Charles stared at Diane.
"You told me his letters were threats.""
"They were.""
"He was asking to see his son.""
"He was blackmailing us!""
"Us?""
Charles laughed bitterly.
"There was no us. You were protecting yourself.""
Diane's face hardened.
"I was protecting all of us.""
Richard stepped in.
"By helping Michael sabotage Halston?""
"I didn't help him sabotage anything.""
"Then why were you communicating with him?""
She stopped.
Officer Martinez said, "Mrs. Whitmore, you've asked for counsel. You should probably wait for counsel.""
Diane ignored her.
She looked at Richard.
"Michael contacted me eight months ago.""
Charles frowned.
"Eight months?""
"He said he had proof.""
"Of what?""
"The Mercer transfers.""
Richard's expression changed.
"Our father's involvement?""
"Everything.""
Charles looked sick.
"What did he want?""
"Money at first.""
"How much?""
"Twenty million.""
Richard gave a stunned laugh.
"And you thought you could hide that?""
"I didn't pay him.""
"Then what did you do?""
Diane looked toward the floor.
"I negotiated.""
Richard's eyes narrowed.
"What does that mean?""
"He wanted more than money.""
"What?""
"Halston.""
Laura looked up sharply.
"He has no claim to Halston.""
"He believes he does.""
"Why?""
Diane looked at Charles.
"Because part of the money stolen from the Mercer was used to build the original Halston acquisition fund.""
Richard went still.
Charles whispered, "That's impossible.""
"Your father told me himself.""
Richard's voice dropped.
"Our company was built with stolen money?""
"Not all of it.""
"How much?""
"I don't know.""
"How much, Diane?""
"Enough.""
Richard walked away from her.
For the first time all night, he looked lost.
He placed both hands on the bar and lowered his head.
I didn't know what to say.
A few hours earlier, he'd been a stranger who stood up because he saw someone slap a waitress.
Now his entire family legacy was collapsing around him.
I walked over.
"You okay?""
He gave a quiet laugh.
"No.""
It was the simplest answer he'd given all night.
Then he looked at me.
"My father taught me that reputation was everything.""
I glanced toward Diane.
"Maybe that's the problem.""
Richard frowned.
"What?""
"Everybody here keeps trying to protect reputations.""
I pointed toward Kevin.
"He protected the restaurant.""
Toward Charles.
"He protected his father.""
Toward Diane.
"She says she protected her family.""
Then toward the fake confession on Laura's screen.
"And somebody is trying to destroy yours.""
Richard studied me.
"So?""
"So maybe stop protecting reputations and protect the truth.""
He stared at me for a moment.
Then nodded.
"Laura.""
She looked up.
"Release everything.""
Charles turned sharply.
"What?""
Richard faced him.
"All internal Mercer-related documents Halston legally controls. Preserve every email, financial record, termination file and payment.""
"Richard, think about what that could do.""
"I am.""
"It could destroy the company.""
"Then maybe the company deserves to be rebuilt.""
Charles stepped toward him.
"Thousands of people work for Halston.""
"And that's why we do this correctly.""
Richard's voice hardened.
"No more cover-ups.""
Diane laughed softly.
"You think transparency will save you?""
"No.""
Richard looked at her.
"But secrecy clearly hasn't.""
Laura started typing.
Then her laptop froze.
"What happened?""
She tapped the keyboard.
Nothing.
The screen went black.
A second later, white letters appeared.
REMOTE SESSION ACTIVE.
"Disconnect it," Richard said.
Laura reached for the power button.
Another message appeared.
HELLO, RICHARD.
Everyone stared.
Then:
YOU ALWAYS WERE THE GOOD SON.
Charles whispered, "Michael.""
A third message appeared.
ASK CHARLES WHAT YOUR FATHER DID THE NIGHT OF THE CRASH.
Richard slowly turned toward his brother.
Charles looked terrified.
"What night?"" Richard asked.
Charles didn't answer.
The screen changed again.
A video file appeared.
MERCER_0914.
Laura whispered, "Don't open unknown files.""
Richard's eyes never left Charles.
"Do you know what's in it?""
"No.""
"You're lying.""
Charles backed away.
"Richard.""
"What did Dad do?""
Diane was staring at Charles too.
Even she seemed confused.
"Charles?""
The laptop displayed another message.
HE WON'T TELL YOU.
SO I WILL.
The video opened automatically.
Grainy nighttime footage filled the screen.
A parking garage.
A timestamp from fifteen years earlier.
Michael Grant appeared beside a black sedan.
Then another man entered the frame.
Richard inhaled sharply.
Even I recognized him from old photographs.
Richard and Charles's father.
Arthur Hale.
The video had no sound.
Arthur grabbed Michael by the jacket.
They argued.
Then Charles appeared.
A much younger Charles.
He stepped between them.
For a moment, it looked like he was trying to stop the fight.
Then Arthur handed him something.
Car keys.
Michael walked away.
Charles watched him go.
Arthur said something.
Charles hesitated.
Then walked toward Michael's car.
He crouched beside the front wheel.
The footage ended.
Richard stared at his brother.
"What did you do?""
Charles shook his head.
"It isn't what it looks like.""
Richard's voice rose.
"What did you do to his car?""
"I didn't know Dad was going to—"
He stopped.
Too late.
Richard stepped toward him.
"Going to what?""
Charles's eyes filled with horror.
Before he could answer, Laura's phone rang.
She looked at the number.
"Halston security.""
She answered.
"Hello?""
A man's voice shouted through the speaker.
"Ms. Bennett, we found the intruder.""
Laura stood.
"Michael?""
"No.""
She frowned.
"What do you mean, no?""
The security officer spoke quickly.
"The man in the gray jacket isn't Michael Grant.""
Charles grabbed the phone.
"Then who is he?""
There was a pause.
"We identified him from his driver's license.""
Another pause.
"His name is Daniel Grant.""
Charles's face emptied.
Richard whispered, "Who's Daniel?""
This time, Diane looked genuinely terrified.
Preston stared at his mother.
"Mom?""
May you like
Diane slowly sank into a chair.
Then she whispered, "Michael's other son.""
