Chapter 1: The Man at Table Twelve

Mrs. Whitmore stared at the man holding the phone as if she had just seen a ghost.

The entire dining room had gone silent.

A second earlier, she had been threatening to have me fired. Now her fingers were frozen around the strap of her designer purse.

The stranger stepped away from Table Twelve.

He was probably in his late fifties, tall, silver-haired, dressed in a charcoal suit that looked expensive without trying to look expensive. He didn't raise his voice.

He didn't need to.

"I recorded the whole thing," he said.

Mrs. Whitmore swallowed.

"Richard.""

Kevin's head snapped toward her.

The man lowered his phone slightly.

"Hello, Diane.""

Something about the way he said her name made my stomach tighten.

They knew each other.

Diane Whitmore glanced around the restaurant. People were staring. One woman had her own phone pointed toward us now.

"This is a misunderstanding," Diane said.

Richard looked at the red handprint forming across my cheek.

"Which part?""

Diane's face hardened.

"The waitress spilled wine all over me.""

"And then apologized immediately.""

"She ruined a four-thousand-dollar dress!""

Richard's expression didn't change.

"So you hit her?""

Diane stepped closer to him.

"Delete the video.""

"No.""

"Richard.""

"No.""

Kevin finally found his voice.

"Sir, perhaps we can handle this privately.""

Richard turned toward him.

"You mean the way you handled it when your employee told you she'd been assaulted?""

Kevin went pale again.

"I was trying to de-escalate the situation.""

"You told her to apologize to the woman who slapped her.""

Kevin looked at me.

I had never seen my manager afraid before.

Not even when a food critic threatened to destroy us in a review.

"Emily," Kevin said quietly, "why don't you go into the kitchen?""

I stared at him.

"No.""

His eyes widened.

That one word felt different this time.

My hands were still trembling. My cheek still burned. Broken glass glittered beside my shoes.

But I wasn't bending down again.

Diane laughed sharply.

"Look at this. Now you've encouraged her.""

Richard ignored her and looked at me.

"Are you hurt?""

"My face hurts.""

"Do you want the police called?""

Kevin immediately said, "I don't think that's necessary.""

Richard didn't even look at him.

"I asked Emily.""

Hearing someone use my name instead of calling me "the waitress" nearly broke something inside me.

I nodded.

"Yes.""

Diane's confidence cracked.

"Emily, think very carefully.""

I turned toward her.

She lowered her voice.

"You don't want to turn an accident into something that follows you for the rest of your career.""

There it was.

Not an apology.

A threat.

Richard raised his phone again.

"That was recorded too.""

Diane's eyes flashed.

"You have no idea what you're interfering with.""

Richard almost smiled.

"I think I do.""

Kevin suddenly stepped between them.

"Everyone, please. Our guests are watching.""

A man from another table called out, "We saw what happened.""

Then a woman near the bar said, "So did I.""

Another voice followed.

"She slapped that girl.""

Diane spun around.

"Mind your own business!""

That only made more phones appear.

My humiliation was becoming public, but strangely, I no longer wanted to disappear.

For the first time since the slap, Diane looked smaller.

Then Richard did something unexpected.

He walked to my fallen tray, crouched down, and began picking up the unbroken silverware.

"Sir, don't," I said.

He looked up.

"Why?""

"You'll cut yourself.""

He nodded toward my hand.

"So might you.""

He placed the silverware on a nearby table and stood.

That tiny act nearly made me cry.

Kevin had watched me kneel beside broken glass after being slapped.

This stranger had been the one to stop me.

Sirens sounded faintly outside.

Diane heard them too.

Her jaw tightened.

"You called them?""

Richard held up his phone.

"The gentleman behind me did.""

Kevin whispered something under his breath.

Diane grabbed her coat.

"I'm leaving.""

Richard moved just enough to block the aisle without touching her.

"I wouldn't.""

"Get out of my way.""

"The police will want your statement.""

She laughed.

"You think I'm afraid of a misdemeanor?""

Richard studied her.

"No. I think you're afraid of the video.""

For the first time, Diane had no answer.

Two officers entered moments later.

One spoke to Richard. The other approached me.

"My name is Officer Martinez. Are you Emily?""

"Yes.""

"Can you tell me what happened?""

I opened my mouth.

Kevin touched my elbow.

"Emily, perhaps I should explain—"

I pulled away.

"No.""

Officer Martinez looked between us.

"Sir, please let her speak.""

So I did.

I told him about the chair.

The spilled wine.

My apology.

The slap.

The threat.

Everything.

Diane interrupted twice.

Both times Richard quietly raised his phone.

Both times she stopped.

Then Officer Martinez asked Richard to show him the recording.

Richard unlocked the screen.

Diane's voice suddenly changed.

"Richard, please.""

He looked at her.

That was when I noticed something I hadn't before.

Diane wasn't merely embarrassed.

She was terrified.

Richard handed the phone to the officer.

"Watch from the beginning.""

Officer Martinez pressed play.

Kevin stood beside me, sweating.

Thirty seconds later, the officer's expression changed.

But not at the slap.

He rewound the video.

Then he zoomed in on something behind Diane's table.

"What is that?"" he asked.

Richard leaned closer.

Kevin did too.

And suddenly Kevin whispered, "Oh, God.""

I stared at the screen.

The video hadn't only captured Diane hitting me.

May you like

It had captured what happened seconds before I spilled the wine.

Someone had pushed that chair backward deliberately.
