Chapter 11: The Man Across the Street
Richard moved toward the window.
Officer Martinez caught his arm.
"Don't.""
"He's right there.""
"Which is exactly why you don't go outside.""
She radioed officers stationed near the entrance.
Charles stood frozen beside the table.
Another message arrived.
COME ALONE.
Richard read it over his shoulder.
"You're not going anywhere.""
Charles looked at him.
"This started with me.""
"No. It started with Dad.""
"And I helped bury it.""
"That doesn't mean you walk into the street.""
Charles stared through the glass.
Traffic moved along the wet Manhattan pavement. Headlights flashed across the windows.
People passed under umbrellas.
No obvious watcher.
Then a man stepped out from beneath an awning across the street.
Gray hair.
Dark coat.
He didn't hide.
Charles whispered, "Michael.""
Preston rushed toward the window.
Diane grabbed his arm.
"No.""
He ripped free.
"That's him?""
She didn't answer.
"That's my father?""
Her face twisted.
"Biologically.""
Preston looked at her with disgust.
"Stop saying it like that.""
Outside, two officers approached Michael.
He raised both hands.
No resistance.
They searched him.
Then Officer Martinez received a radio call.
"He's asking to come inside voluntarily.""
Richard laughed without humor.
"Of course he is.""
Minutes later, the doors opened.
Michael Grant entered between two officers.
He was thinner than I expected.
Older than the photograph on Laura's phone.
A pale scar ran from his jaw toward his ear.
His left leg dragged slightly when he walked.
But his eyes were sharp.
They went first to Charles.
Then Diane.
Then Preston.
Everything in his face changed.
Preston stopped breathing.
Michael whispered, "You look like my father.""
Diane stepped between them.
"Don't.""
Michael's eyes moved to her.
"Hello, Diane.""
She looked almost physically ill.
Officer Martinez said, "Mr. Grant came voluntarily. He's not under arrest at this time.""
Richard approached.
"Michael Grant.""
Michael studied him.
"Richard Hale.""
"You've been using my credentials.""
"No.""
"Your son has.""
"Daniel did what he thought was necessary.""
"He fabricated a confession.""
Michael's eyes narrowed.
"No.""
Laura stepped forward.
"A confession was sent from Richard's account.""
Michael looked genuinely surprised.
"Daniel didn't send that.""
"How do you know?""
"Because that wasn't our plan.""
Richard's expression hardened.
"Our?""
Michael glanced toward Diane.
"There's another player.""
Nobody spoke.
Kevin whispered, "M.""
Michael looked at him.
"Excuse me?""
"The messages. Someone called M was giving instructions.""
Michael shook his head.
"That wasn't me.""
Diane suddenly laughed.
Too loudly.
Everyone looked at her.
"This is absurd.""
Michael stared.
Then smiled sadly.
"You still laugh when you're cornered.""
"Go to hell.""
"I've already been there.""
Preston stepped forward.
"Did you know about me?""
Michael's face softened.
"Yes.""
"Did you want me?""
Diane whispered, "Preston.""
He ignored her.
Michael answered immediately.
"Every day.""
Preston's face crumpled.
Michael took one step forward.
Diane blocked him.
"Don't touch him.""
Michael stopped.
"You haven't changed.""
"I protected him from you.""
"You protected yourself.""
"You were dangerous.""
"I was injured, hunted, and furious. That's different.""
Charles interrupted.
"Michael, tell Richard about the crash.""
Michael looked at him.
"You finally told him?""
"Part.""
Richard stepped closer.
"I want all of it.""
Michael nodded.
"Arthur Hale ordered someone to sabotage my car.""
Richard's jaw tightened.
"Proof?""
"The ledger.""
"That's financial evidence.""
"There's more.""
"What?""
"A recording.""
Charles stared.
"You recorded Dad?""
"Not intentionally.""
Michael reached slowly into his coat.
The officers tensed.
He stopped.
"Phone.""
Officer Martinez retrieved it herself.
Michael gave her the passcode.
She opened an audio file.
A man's voice filled the restaurant.
Arthur Hale.
Even through the poor recording, Richard recognized him instantly.
"If Grant reaches the attorney, we're finished.""
Another man answered.
"What do you want me to do?""
Arthur's reply was cold.
"Make sure the car doesn't.""
Richard closed his eyes.
Charles turned away.
Michael said, "I survived because the car hit trees before the ravine. Daniel's mother found me.""
Preston frowned.
"Daniel's mother?""
Michael looked at him.
"Her name was Rebecca.""
Diane's face tightened.
"Was?""
Michael looked toward her.
"She died four years ago.""
For a moment, genuine pain crossed his face.
Preston asked, "Did she know about me?""
"Yes.""
"Did everybody know about me except me?""
Nobody could answer that.
Michael continued.
"Rebecca helped me disappear. We gathered evidence. I wanted Arthur prosecuted.""
"Why didn't you come forward?"" Richard asked.
"Because Arthur found Daniel.""
Richard's expression changed.
"He threatened your son.""
Michael nodded.
"I disappeared to keep him alive.""
Charles looked shattered.
"Arthur told me you were blackmailing him.""
"He told everyone whatever kept them obedient.""
Richard stared toward the floor.
The mythology of his father was collapsing piece by piece.
Then Michael looked at me.
"Emily.""
Hearing my name from him sent a chill through me.
"Why do you know who I am?""
"Because your termination order triggered the system Daniel and I were monitoring.""
"What system?""
"We've been tracking falsified employee records for months.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"You knew employees were being targeted?""
"We knew records were being altered. We didn't know who was choosing the employees.""
I looked at Diane.
Michael followed my eyes.
"No.""
He shook his head.
"Diane was involved, but she wasn't choosing them.""
Kevin frowned.
"Then who was?""
Michael looked toward him.
"The same person who created Richard's confession.""
Richard's voice sharpened.
"Who?""
Michael walked toward Laura's laptop.
"Open the payment records Kevin kept.""
Marcus handed Kevin's cracked phone to Laura.
She connected it.
Files appeared.
Payments.
Messages.
Instructions.
Michael pointed toward one routing number.
"Trace that.""
Laura entered it into the corporate banking system.
A company name appeared.
SILVER CREST CONSULTING LLC.
Richard frowned.
"Never heard of it.""
Laura clicked through.
Then froze.
"Oh, my God.""
"What?""
"This company receives a monthly consulting fee from Halston.""
"Authorized by whom?""
Laura opened the contract.
The signature at the bottom wasn't Charles's.
It wasn't Richard's.
It belonged to Halston's chief operating officer.
Richard stared at the name.
"Martin Cole?""
Laura nodded.
Michael looked at him.
"There's your M.""
Richard stepped back.
Martin Cole had been his father's closest business partner for thirty years.
Charles whispered, "Martin knew about the Mercer.""
Michael nodded.
"He didn't just know.""
Diane finally spoke.
"He helped Arthur steal the money.""
Michael turned toward her.
"And tomorrow morning, he's going to remove Richard, blame Charles, destroy the Mercer evidence, and take Halston for himself.""
Richard's phone buzzed.
A calendar notification appeared.
EMERGENCY GOVERNANCE REVIEW UPDATED.
New time:
8:00 A.M.
Laura stared at it.
"He moved the meeting.""
Richard checked the clock.
Then another notification appeared.
The meeting wasn't tomorrow anymore.
It had been moved to tonight.
