Chapter 6: The Name Behind Diane
"Who is he?""
Richard's question cut through the room.
Kevin stared at his cracked phone in Marcus's hand.
Diane stopped struggling against Officer Martinez.
"Kevin," she said quietly.
It wasn't a warning anymore.
It sounded like fear.
Kevin heard it too.
And something changed in him.
For the first time all night, he looked at Diane without shrinking.
"You told me you'd protect me.""
Diane's voice sharpened.
"Don't be stupid.""
"You said Charles knew everything.""
"He does.""
Charles stepped forward.
"No. I don't.""
Kevin looked between them.
"She told me every payment was authorized.""
"By me?""
"Yes.""
Charles shook his head.
"I've never paid you outside payroll.""
Diane laughed bitterly.
"Of course you're going to deny it now.""
Kevin pointed toward her.
"You gave me access codes.""
Richard's eyes narrowed.
"To what?""
"The executive account.""
Laura inhaled sharply.
Kevin continued.
"Not directly. Temporary login codes. Whenever Mrs. Whitmore wanted a personnel record changed, she'd send me instructions.""
"You falsified HR records?"" Laura asked.
"Not at first.""
"What does that mean?""
Kevin looked sick.
"At first, it was schedules. Bad sections. Fewer shifts. Things that wouldn't trigger corporate review.""
Marcus clenched his jaw.
"You cut Jasmine to eight hours a week.""
Kevin looked down.
"Yes.""
"You knew she had a kid.""
"I know.""
"You knew she needed that job.""
"I know!""
His shout echoed through the restaurant.
Then his voice broke.
"I know.""
For one brief second, nobody spoke.
I didn't feel sorry for him.
But I believed the shame on his face.
Richard pointed toward the phone.
"Who sent that message?""
Marcus picked it up.
The notification preview read:
DELETE EVERYTHING. NOW.
No name.
Just a number.
Kevin swallowed.
"I don't know his real name.""
Diane closed her eyes.
Charles stared at her.
"His?""
She didn't answer.
Richard said, "Kevin.""
"He called himself M.""
"That's it?""
"I never met him.""
"How did he contact you?""
"Encrypted messages. Sometimes regular texts from burner numbers.""
"And you followed instructions from someone you'd never met?""
Kevin looked at Diane.
"Because she told me to.""
Diane scoffed.
"This is pathetic.""
Officer Martinez said, "Mrs. Whitmore, I'd advise you to stop speaking.""
Diane smiled coldly.
"I'm surrounded by people accusing me of crimes. I'm allowed to defend myself.""
"Then get an attorney.""
"I have several.""
Richard turned toward Charles.
"Does M mean anything to you?""
Charles shook his head.
Then Preston spoke.
"Maybe.""
Everyone turned.
He had been sitting silently near the table.
Now he looked terrified.
Diane's reaction was immediate.
"Preston, no.""
Charles stepped toward his son.
"What do you know?""
"Nothing.""
"You just said maybe.""
Preston rubbed his cheek.
"I've seen Mom texting somebody saved as M.""
Diane snapped, "Enough.""
Preston flinched.
Then something hardened in his face.
Maybe it was the slap.
Maybe it was hearing his parents were divorcing.
Maybe he was finally realizing his mother couldn't protect him from every consequence.
"She talks to him late at night.""
Charles went still.
"How late?""
"I don't know. Two. Three in the morning.""
Diane shook her head.
"He's confused.""
"I'm not confused!""
Preston stood.
"I heard you arguing with him last week.""
"What did she say?"" Richard asked.
Preston looked at his mother.
Her stare was vicious.
He hesitated.
Then answered.
"She said, 'Once Charles is out, Richard is next.''"
Silence.
Richard didn't move.
Charles slowly turned toward Diane.
"What does that mean?""
"Nothing.""
"What does it mean?""
"I was talking about the company.""
Richard's voice became dangerously calm.
"Out of what?""
Diane looked toward the police officers.
"I want my lawyer.""
Officer Martinez nodded.
"That's probably wise.""
But Charles wasn't finished.
"Out of what, Diane?""
She refused to answer.
Laura's laptop chimed.
Everyone turned.
"I have the access location," she said.
Richard walked over.
"Where?""
Laura frowned at the screen.
"That's strange.""
"What?""
"The login that created Emily's fake theft report didn't come from Kevin.""
Kevin looked relieved for half a second.
"It came from an executive device registered to Charles.""
Charles shook his head.
"Impossible.""
Laura turned the laptop.
"Device ID CWH-03.""
Charles stared.
"I haven't used that laptop in months.""
"Where is it?""
He looked at Diane.
Their eyes met.
Then his face changed.
"Diane has it.""
She laughed.
"You're unbelievable.""
"You took it from the apartment.""
"It was in my office.""
"My company laptop was in your office?""
"You left it there.""
Laura typed again.
"The device is still online.""
Richard leaned closer.
"Can you locate it?""
"Approximately.""
She waited.
A map appeared.
Then she looked up.
"It's in this building.""
I felt a chill run through me.
Richard glanced toward the restaurant office.
Kevin immediately shook his head.
"It's not mine.""
Laura refreshed the location.
"The signal is close. Very close.""
Officer Martinez spoke to her partner.
"Check the office.""
Kevin gave them the key.
One officer disappeared through the staff corridor.
Diane suddenly looked toward the exit.
Richard noticed.
"So the laptop is here.""
"I don't know what you're talking about.""
Charles stepped toward her.
"You brought it?""
"No.""
"Then who did?""
She didn't answer.
A crash sounded from the kitchen.
Someone screamed.
Marcus turned.
"What the hell?""
Then came the sound of the rear service door slamming.
Officer Martinez ran toward the kitchen.
Her partner shouted from the hallway.
"Someone's running!""
Richard moved instinctively, but Charles grabbed his arm.
"Let the police handle it.""
We heard footsteps pounding through the service corridor.
Then silence.
Thirty seconds later, Officer Martinez returned carrying a silver laptop inside a clear plastic evidence bag.
"The person got away through the alley.""
Laura stared at the device.
"That's CWH-03.""
Charles looked at Diane.
She said nothing.
Officer Martinez placed the laptop carefully on an empty table.
"It was found in the manager's office.""
Kevin stared at it.
"I swear I've never seen that.""
"Someone was using it minutes ago," Laura said.
Richard looked toward the kitchen.
"Who was back there?""
Kevin shook his head.
"Staff. Cooks. Dishwashers.""
"Anyone who shouldn't be?""
"I don't know.""
Marcus suddenly snapped his fingers.
"The man at the bar.""
"What man?"" I asked.
"There was a guy sitting alone before everything happened. Gray jacket. Baseball cap.""
Kevin frowned.
"I thought he left.""
"He did," Marcus said.
"Then I saw him near the kitchen after the police arrived.""
Officer Martinez immediately asked, "Can you describe him?""
Marcus did.
Laura carefully examined the laptop through the bag.
Then she frowned.
"There's something attached.""
A small black USB drive protruded from the side.
Charles leaned closer.
"Can we see what's on it?""
Officer Martinez shook her head.
"Not until it's processed.""
Richard stared at the drive.
Diane suddenly laughed.
Everyone looked at her.
It wasn't her earlier arrogant laugh.
This one sounded almost desperate.
"You people still don't understand.""
Charles's voice was low.
"Understand what?""
She looked at Richard.
Then at Charles.
Finally, she looked at me.
"Emily was never supposed to be the target.""
My stomach tightened.
"What?""
Diane's expression changed into something almost like pity.
"That chair. That video. Preston's stupid little game.""
She shook her head.
"All of that was just bad luck.""
Preston whispered, "Mom, what are you saying?""
Diane ignored him.
Richard stepped closer.
"Then who was the target?""
Before she could answer, Laura's laptop chimed again.
She looked down.
Her face drained of color.
"Mr. Hale.""
"What?""
"The system just sent an automated security alert.""
Richard walked to her side.
I followed.
A file had been opened remotely from Charles's stolen laptop seconds before the police recovered it.
Laura clicked the alert.
A document title appeared.
HALSTON ACQUISITION — PHASE TWO.
Below it was a list of names.
Richard Hale.
Charles Whitmore.
Three board members.
And at the bottom, in bold red letters:
REMOVAL SEQUENCE.
Richard stared at the screen.

Then another line appeared.
