Chapter 12: The Vote
"We go to headquarters.""
Richard didn't hesitate.
Officer Martinez immediately said, "You're not confronting anyone.""
"I'm attending my own board meeting.""
"Your building is part of an active investigation.""
"Then come with me.""
Michael laughed softly.
"Martin moved it because he knows the laptop was recovered.""
Laura was already packing her computer.
"He'll push the vote before we can authenticate the files.""
Charles looked at Richard.
"If he suspends your authority, he controls the internal investigation.""
"And the evidence," Richard said.
Michael nodded.
"Exactly.""
Diane stood.
"I'm coming.""
Officer Martinez looked at her.
"No.""
"I am a shareholder.""
Charles laughed.
"Through our marital trust.""
"Which hasn't been dissolved.""
"Yet.""
Diane's eyes flashed.
Preston stepped forward.
"I'm going too.""
Both parents said, "No.""
He stared at them.
"Neither of you gets to tell me what to do tonight.""
Michael almost smiled.
Diane noticed.
"Don't encourage him.""
Michael's face hardened.
"You've had twenty years to raise him. Don't blame me for one sentence.""
The tension between them could have cracked glass.
Officer Martinez spoke with another officer, then turned toward Richard.
"NYPD will coordinate with corporate security. Nobody touches evidence. Nobody leaves without clearance.""
Richard nodded.
Then he looked at me.
"Emily, you should go home.""
I almost laughed.
"Now?""
"You've already been through enough.""
"Someone fabricated a theft accusation against me.""
"I know.""
"Someone approved firing me.""
"I know.""
"And apparently that was connected to whatever is happening at your company.""
Richard hesitated.
"Yes.""
"Then I'm coming.""
Kevin shook his head.
"Emily, don't.""
I looked at him.
"You lost the right to give me advice when you told me to apologize after she slapped me.""
He looked down.
Marcus said, "I'm coming too.""
Laura nodded.
"We may need witnesses who can verify the employee manipulation.""
Forty minutes later, we entered Halston Hospitality's headquarters.
The executive floor looked nothing like the restaurant.
Glass walls.
Marble floors.
City lights spreading beyond enormous windows.
But the atmosphere felt colder.
Seven board members sat around a long table.
At the head sat Martin Cole.
He was in his sixties, silver-haired and perfectly composed.
When Richard entered, Martin didn't look surprised.
"Richard.""
"Martin.""
His eyes moved across the group.
Charles.
Laura.
Michael.
Then his composure cracked.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
So did Richard.
Martin slowly stood.
"Michael Grant.""
Michael smiled.
"Been a while.""
One board member whispered, "He's alive?""
Martin recovered.
"This meeting is restricted.""
Richard walked to the table.
"Then why wasn't I invited?""
Martin folded his hands.
"Because this meeting concerns allegations against you.""
"Allegations you manufactured?""
Murmurs spread around the table.
Martin sighed.
"Richard, emotional accusations won't help you.""
Laura stepped forward.
"We have evidence of unauthorized access to executive accounts.""
Martin looked at her.
"Then IT should investigate.""
"We also have evidence of fabricated personnel records.""
"Again, investigate.""
"And shell-company payments to Silver Crest Consulting.""
That landed.
Martin's eyes changed.
Barely.
But enough.
Richard placed both hands on the table.
"Tell them what Silver Crest is.""
Martin smiled.
"A legitimate advisory company.""
"Owned by whom?""
"I don't memorize every vendor.""
Laura opened her laptop.
"Silver Crest's registered agent connects to a trust administered by your personal attorney.""
The room erupted.
Martin remained calm.
"Indirect associations prove nothing.""
Michael stepped forward.
"The Mercer ledger does.""
Martin looked at him.
"I have no idea what you're talking about.""
"You always were better at lying than Arthur.""
Richard studied Martin's face.
"You knew my father ordered Michael's crash.""
Martin didn't answer.
"You helped him.""
Martin turned toward the board.
"This is exactly why emergency action is necessary. Richard has become emotionally compromised.""
One director frowned.
"You sent us documents showing Richard diverted company funds.""
"Correct.""
Laura interrupted.
"They're fraudulent.""
"Your opinion.""
"My professional finding as head of HR compliance.""
Martin's smile disappeared.
Richard pulled out a chair.
"Then let's vote.""
Charles grabbed his arm.
"What?""
Richard looked at the board.
"You want a governance vote? Let's have one.""
Martin studied him suspiciously.
Richard continued.
"But first, every director sees everything.""
Michael placed a small drive on the table.
"The Mercer records.""
Laura connected it to an isolated laptop.
Files filled the screen.
Bank transfers.
Shell corporations.
Old emails.
Scanned contracts.
One by one, the board members leaned closer.
Martin's confidence began to crack.
Then Laura opened the employee records.
Lena.
Anthony.
Jasmine.
Roberto.
Me.
Beside each was evidence of manipulated schedules, fabricated complaints or altered termination codes.
One board member stared at Martin.
"How long has this been happening?""
Martin said nothing.
Richard looked at me.
"Emily.""
I froze.
"What?""
"Tell them what happened tonight.""
I looked around the table.
Powerful strangers in expensive suits.
Three hours earlier, I would have been terrified to speak.
Then I remembered the slap.
The broken glass.
Kevin telling me to apologize.
So I told them.
Everything.
When I finished, nobody spoke.
Martin finally said, "A restaurant incident has no relevance to corporate governance.""
I looked directly at him.
"It has everything to do with it.""
His eyebrows lifted.
"You built a system where people with less power were supposed to stay quiet.""
I felt my voice strengthen.
"Tonight, I didn't.""
Richard looked toward the board.
"Neither will I.""
Martin reached for his phone.
Michael suddenly said, "Don't.""
Martin stopped.
"Excuse me?""
"You always reach for your phone when you're afraid.""
Martin laughed.
"I'm not afraid of you.""
Michael stepped closer.
"You should be afraid of Daniel.""
For the first time, Martin went pale.
Richard noticed.
"What does Daniel have?""
Michael looked at the clock.
11:24.
"Something I didn't trust myself to carry.""
Martin stood abruptly.
"This meeting is over.""
"No," Richard said.
Martin headed toward the door.
Two security officers stepped into his path.
He stopped.
His phone rang.
Everyone heard it.
He looked at the screen.
UNKNOWN CALLER.
Michael smiled.
"Answer it.""
Martin didn't move.
The phone kept ringing.
"Answer it," Richard repeated.
Martin slowly pressed the button.
"Hello?""
Daniel's voice came through.
"Hi, Martin.""
Martin closed his eyes.
Daniel continued.
"You've spent fifteen years looking for the original Mercer ledger.""
Martin said nothing.
"You've spent eight months trying to frame Richard before Michael could expose you.""
Still nothing.
"And tonight you made one mistake.""
Martin's voice was barely audible.
"What mistake?""
"You thought the ledger was the evidence.""
Michael looked toward Richard.
Daniel laughed softly through the phone.
"It isn't.""
Martin gripped the table.
"Then what is?""
A file notification appeared simultaneously on every board member's phone.
Laura's laptop chimed.
Richard's phone buzzed.
So did Charles's.
Michael looked at Martin.
"Open it.""
Laura clicked first.
A video began.
Arthur Hale sat in an office fifteen years earlier.
Across from him sat a younger Martin Cole.
Arthur pushed financial documents across the desk.
Then Martin spoke.
The audio was perfectly clear.
"We move the Mercer money through six companies. Grant takes the fall. If he talks, we make sure he never reaches court.""
Martin stumbled backward.
"No.""
On the video, Arthur asked one final question.
"And Charles?""
Young Martin smiled.
"If necessary, we frame him too.""
Charles went white.
But the recording continued.
Arthur leaned forward.
"What about Richard?""
Martin's younger face turned toward the hidden camera.
"If Richard ever finds out, he's the first one we remove.""
The video stopped.
Silence filled the boardroom.
May you like
Then Daniel's voice came through Martin's phone.
"Now take the vote.""
