Chapter 8: The Dead Man

Nobody spoke.

Richard took Laura's phone from Charles.

"Who is he?""

Charles stared at the security photograph.

"Michael Grant.""

Diane closed her eyes.

There it was.

M.

Richard looked from the photograph to his brother.

"Who is Michael Grant?""

Charles seemed unable to answer.

Diane did it for him.

"Ask your brother what happened at the Mercer.""

Charles spun toward her.

"Don't.""

Richard's face tightened.

"The Mercer?""

I knew the name.

Everyone in hospitality did.

The Mercer Crown had been one of Manhattan's most famous luxury hotels before a financial scandal destroyed it almost fifteen years earlier.

Richard looked at Charles.

"You told me the Mercer failed because of debt.""

"It did.""

"Then why is she talking about it?""

Charles rubbed his face.

"Because Michael worked there.""

"As what?""

"Chief financial officer.""

Richard stared at him.

"And he's supposed to be dead?""

"Yes.""

"How?""

"Car accident.""

Diane laughed bitterly.

"That's what everyone was told.""

Officer Martinez stepped closer.

"Mrs. Whitmore, if you have information about someone falsely reported dead, now would be an excellent time to share it.""

Diane looked at her.

"I've requested an attorney.""

"Then stop volunteering cryptic statements.""

Diane smiled.

"Fair enough.""

Richard turned back to Charles.

"What happened?""

Charles glanced around the restaurant.

Employees.

Police.

Customers still watching from a distance.

"Not here.""

Richard stepped closer.

"People have lost their jobs because of whatever started back then. Emily was assaulted tonight. Someone is inside our headquarters using my identity.""

His voice hardened.

"You're going to tell me now.""

Charles looked defeated.

"Michael discovered money was disappearing from the Mercer.""

"Stolen?""

"Moved.""

"By whom?""

"Several executives.""

"Names.""

Charles hesitated.

Diane whispered, "Careful.""

Richard ignored her.

"Names.""

"My father was one.""

Richard stopped breathing for a second.

Their father.

I knew enough about Richard Hale from business magazines to know his father had built a hospitality empire before dying eight years ago.

Richard shook his head.

"No.""

"I found out later.""

"How much?""

"Almost thirty million dollars.""

Richard stared at him.

"And Michael discovered it?""

"Yes.""

"What happened?""

"He threatened to expose everyone.""

Charles looked at the floor.

"Then he disappeared.""

"You said he died.""

"There was a crash. His car went through a barrier in Pennsylvania. They found burned wreckage.""

"But no body?"" Officer Martinez asked.

Charles shook his head.

"Not enough to identify conclusively.""

Richard's face twisted.

"And nobody told me?""

"Our father made sure the story ended.""

Diane suddenly said, "That's what Charles does best.""

Charles turned toward her.

"You knew too.""

"I learned after we married.""

"And you've been using it ever since.""

Preston looked sick.

"Using what?""

Nobody answered.

He shouted.

"Would someone tell me what is happening?""

Charles looked at his son.

"I made mistakes.""

"What mistakes?""

"I helped Dad bury the Mercer investigation.""

Richard stared at him.

"You helped?""

"I was twenty-nine.""

"You were old enough to know better.""

"I know.""

"You let an innocent man take the blame?""

"No. Michael wasn't innocent.""

"That isn't what I asked.""

Charles fell silent.

Richard's voice cracked for the first time.

"Did you help Dad steal the money?""

"No.""

"Did you know?""

"Not until afterward.""

"Did you cover it up?""

Charles couldn't look at him.

"Yes.""

Richard stepped backward.

The answer seemed to hurt him physically.

I understood something then.

This wasn't just a corporate conspiracy anymore.

It was a family secret that had been rotting for fifteen years.

And someone had finally opened the door.

Laura's phone rang again.

She answered.

"Security.""

She listened.

"What room?""

Her eyes widened.

"Don't enter. Call the police.""

She hung up.

"The man went into Richard's office.""

Richard immediately headed for the door.

Charles grabbed him.

"You're not going there.""

"It's my company.""

"He's dangerous.""

Richard looked at him.

"You know that?""

Charles hesitated.

That hesitation answered the question.

Officer Martinez spoke firmly.

"Nobody leaves until we've finished here. NYPD can respond to headquarters.""

Richard looked furious but stopped.

Laura's laptop chimed.

A new email.

Sent from Richard's account.

To the entire Halston board.

She opened it.

The subject line read:

CONFESSION.

"Oh, no," Laura whispered.

"What?"" Richard asked.

She read aloud.

"'I accept full responsibility for unauthorized transfers totaling $12.4 million and acknowledge that I concealed these transactions from the board.''"

Richard's face went white.

"It has my digital signature.""

Laura nodded.

Charles leaned closer.

"Can they prove it's fake?""

"Eventually.""

"Tomorrow morning isn't eventually.""

That was the point.

The nine o'clock meeting didn't need to prove Richard guilty.

It only needed enough confusion to remove his authority before he could fight back.

Kevin sat heavily in a chair.

"This is how it works.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

"Create the accusation first. Make the paperwork match. Then remove the person before anyone asks questions.""

I felt cold.

The same method.

Again.

Richard looked toward me.

"You were right.""

Diane stared at both of us.

"You two really are enjoying playing detectives.""

I turned toward her.

"Why aren't you scared?""

She smiled.

"Who says I'm not?""

"You knew Michael was alive.""

Her smile disappeared.

Charles looked at her.

"Diane?""

I kept going.

"You weren't surprised by that photograph.""

Richard turned toward her too.

"Emily's right.""

Diane said nothing.

"You knew," Charles whispered.

Preston stood slowly.

"Mom?""

Diane looked at her son.

Something passed across her face.

Regret, maybe.

Then it vanished.

Preston's voice broke.

"Who is Michael to you?""

She looked away.

Charles suddenly seemed to understand.

"No.""

Richard frowned.

"What?""

Charles stared at Diane.

"No.""

She closed her eyes.

"Charles.""

"Tell me I'm wrong.""

Preston looked between them.

"Dad?""

Charles took one slow step backward.

"How long?""

Diane whispered, "This isn't the place.""

"How long?""

"Charles—"

"HOW LONG?""

The shout shook the room.

Officer Martinez moved toward him.

Diane finally opened her eyes.

"Sixteen years.""

Charles looked like he'd been punched.

Preston went completely still.

He was maybe twenty.

Twenty-one.

I did the math.

So did everyone else.

Preston looked at his mother.

"No.""

Diane's eyes filled with tears for the first time all night.

"Preston.""

"No.""

Charles stared at the son he'd apparently raised his entire life.

May you like

Then Diane said the words that destroyed whatever remained of the Whitmore family.

"Michael Grant is Preston's biological father.""
