Chapter 9: The Betrayal Before the Car
My father slowly lowered the phone.
Nobody moved.
The silence was unbearable.
“What did your lawyer say?”” I asked.
Daniel looked at Claire.
“She filed a legal claim.””
My heart sank.
“Against who?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Against this house.””
I felt dizzy.
Claire immediately started crying.
“Daniel, please.””
He looked at her.
“You filed a claim saying you had ownership rights?””
“I was trying to protect myself.””
“From what?””
She looked away.
That was the answer.
Daniel walked toward the window.
The same window where we had watched Marcus’s new car arrive yesterday.
It felt like years ago.
Not hours.
He turned around.
“How long?””
Claire wiped her face.
“What?””
“How long have you been planning this?””
She stayed quiet.
“Claire.””
Finally, she whispered.
“Almost a year.””
A year.
The word felt impossible.
I remembered all the dinners.
All the family moments.
All the times she smiled at me.
And during all of it, she was preparing to take everything.
Marcus sat down.
“She was planning this for a year?””
Claire looked at him.
“I had no choice.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You always say that.””
He looked at me.
“But Sophie had a choice too.””
Claire’s face changed.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying you hurt the wrong person.””
Nobody spoke.
Daniel’s lawyer arrived later that afternoon.
He reviewed everything.
The bank records.
The forged documents.
The hidden account.
The messages.
Every piece connected.
“This was not a single mistake,” he said.
Claire looked down.
The lawyer continued.
“There appears to be a pattern of unauthorized transfers.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
I could tell he was trying not to break.
Because this wasn’t just about money.
This was about trust.
Years of trust.
The lawyer turned to me.
“Sophie, I know this is difficult, but I need to ask you something.””
I nodded.
“What?””
“Did you ever give Claire permission to access your account?””
“No.””
“Did you ever sign documents allowing her to use your identity?””
“No.””
He nodded.
“Then we have a clear record.””
Claire suddenly stood.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at her.
She looked at me.
“Sophie.””
I didn’t answer.
Her voice softened.
“I really did love you.””
The words hurt.
Because I wanted to believe them.
But love didn’t take someone’s future.
Love didn’t hide bank accounts.
Love didn’t forge signatures.
I looked at her.
“Then why did you do this?””
She started crying.
And for the first time, she gave a real answer.
“Because I was afraid.””
I frowned.
“Afraid of what?””
She looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
“I thought if I didn’t secure something for myself, I would lose everything.””
My father stared.
“You destroyed my daughter’s future because you were afraid?””
Claire had no answer.
The lawyer packed the documents.
“There’s one more thing.””
Daniel looked up.
“What?””
The lawyer held a printed report.
“The seventeen thousand dollars from the box.””
Everyone became silent.
“We traced where it came from.””
My hands tightened.
“Where?””
The lawyer looked at Daniel.
“It wasn’t transferred to Claire’s brother.””
Daniel frowned.
“Then who?””
The lawyer placed the paper down.
“It was transferred to an account created under a different name.””
Claire looked terrified.
“What name?””
The lawyer glanced at the document.
Then he said:
“The account belongs to someone who has been working with Claire.””
My father looked at his wife.
“Who?””
Claire’s face went completely white.
Because she knew the name before anyone else did.
And when the lawyer read it aloud, everyone froze.
“Rebecca Collins.””
Claire’s mother.
But there was one more detail.
One detail that changed the entire story.
The account wasn’t created to hide money.
May you like
It was created to hide something else.
Something Claire never wanted Daniel to discover.
