Chapter 8: The Debt She Hid

The room went silent after my father’s words.

“The debt wasn’t hers.””

I looked at Claire.

“What does that mean?””

She didn’t answer.

Daniel held the documents in his hand.

“Claire.””

His voice was low.

“Whose debt was it?””

She sat down.

For the first time, she looked defeated.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Just caught.

“It was my brother’s.””

I blinked.

“Your brother?””

Claire nodded.

“He had problems.””

Daniel stared at her.

“So you used Sophie’s money to pay your brother’s debt?””

“I was trying to protect my family.””

My father laughed quietly.

“You mean the family you chose.””

Claire looked hurt.

“That’s not fair.””

I couldn’t believe her.

“Fair?””

She looked at me.

“Yes.””

I stepped closer.

“You used money I earned for college.””

My voice shook.

“You signed my name on documents.””

She looked away.

“And you’re talking about fair?””

Marcus stood near the window.

He had been silent for a long time.

Then he finally spoke.

“Mom, why didn’t you tell me?””

Claire looked at him.

“Because I didn’t want you involved.””

“But you involved Sophie.””

That sentence hit hard.

Claire looked at him.

“You don’t understand.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No, I understand now.””

He looked at me.

“I thought I was getting a gift.””

His voice cracked.

“But I was getting something stolen from someone else.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because for the first time, Marcus wasn’t the person I blamed.

He was another person Claire had manipulated.

Daniel picked up the flash drive.

“What’s this?””

Claire’s expression changed.

“Nothing.””

My father looked at her.

“You don’t get to say that anymore.””

He plugged it into his laptop.

A folder appeared.

Inside were files.

Bank statements.

Messages.

Photos.

Daniel opened the first file.

Then his expression became unreadable.

“What?””

I moved closer.

He turned the screen.

It was a conversation between Claire and someone named Rebecca.

Her mother.

The messages were about money.

But then I saw something else.

A sentence that made my heart stop.

“Once Daniel signs the new paperwork, we can move the rest.””

The room became silent.

My father looked at Claire.

“New paperwork?””

She immediately stood.

“Daniel, listen—”

“No.””

He looked at the screen.

“What paperwork?””

Claire’s eyes filled with fear.

“I can explain.””

“You keep saying that.””

He pointed at the message.

“You planned something else.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Mom, what does that mean?””

Claire didn’t answer.

My father kept reading.

Then he opened another file.

A scanned document.

A legal document.

His face changed.

I knew something was wrong.

“What is it?””

Daniel didn’t speak.

He just handed it to me.

At the top were the words:

“Property Transfer Agreement.””

I looked down.

Then my hands started shaking.

The document listed our house.

My father’s house.

The house I grew up in.

And beside it was a signature.

Daniel’s signature.

But he hadn’t signed it.

He stared at the paper.

“I never signed this.””

Claire whispered.

“Daniel…”

He looked at her.

“You forged my signature?””

She began crying.

“I was desperate.””

“For what?””

She didn’t answer.

My father stood.

“You weren’t just taking Sophie’s money.””

The realization hit him.

“You were trying to take everything.””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

But her voice was weak.

Because we all knew.

The college money was only the beginning.

Daniel called his lawyer immediately.

While he waited, I looked through more files.

Then I found one folder with my name on it.

“Sophie.””

Inside were copies of my school records.

My college applications.

My financial documents.

Things Claire should never have had access to.

Then I saw the date on one file.

It was created before I even knew my college acceptance letter had arrived.

My stomach dropped.

She had been planning this for months.

Before the car.

Before the money disappeared.

Before anyone suspected.

I looked at my father.

“Dad.””

He turned.

“She didn’t suddenly do this.””

My voice trembled.

“She planned it.””

Daniel looked at the files.

And then his phone rang.

His lawyer.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A few seconds passed.

Then his face changed.

“What do you mean someone already filed the paperwork?””

I looked at Claire.

May you like

She went completely pale.

Because whatever she had done next was already in motion.
