Chapter 6: The Name on the Transfer

My father stared at the phone screen for several seconds.

I could see him fighting between anger and disbelief.

“Daniel?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

Claire looked terrified.

“Give me the phone.””

“No.””

His response was immediate.

He turned the screen toward himself.

Then he looked at Marcus.

“Did you know about this?””

Marcus shook his head quickly.

“No.””

Claire stepped forward.

“Daniel, please.””

He looked at her.

“Please what?””

Her voice became softer.

“Let me explain.””

“You’ve had all night to explain.””

The kitchen felt smaller.

The air felt heavier.

I looked at the phone in his hand.

“Who was it?””

My father hesitated.

Then he said the name.

“Marcus.””

My brother’s face changed.

“What?””

Daniel looked down again.

“The ten thousand dollars was transferred to an account under Marcus’s name.””

The room went silent.

Marcus stepped back.

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I didn’t ask for that.””

Claire immediately moved toward him.

“Marcus—”

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“Mom, what did you do?””

I watched his face.

For the first time, I saw him understand.

He wasn’t just standing beside a car anymore.

He was standing in the middle of a disaster.

Daniel looked at Claire.

“You used Sophie’s money and moved some of it into his account?””

Claire started crying.

“I was protecting him.””

Marcus looked horrified.

“Protecting me from what?””

Claire didn’t answer.

Daniel walked closer.

“Answer him.””

She covered her face.

“His business idea.””

Marcus froze.

“My what?””

“You told me you wanted to start something.””

Marcus shook his head.

“I said I wanted to try selling custom sports equipment.””

“You needed money.””

“Not Sophie’s money!””

The words echoed through the room.

Claire looked at him.

“I thought I was helping you.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“You destroyed her future to help me?””

I looked away.

Because hearing him say it hurt.

Not because I blamed him.

But because he was finally seeing what I had seen.

Claire had always created a competition between us.

And somehow, she had convinced everyone that one child had to lose so the other could win.

Daniel grabbed the notebook again.

“Wait.””

He flipped through the pages.

“There’s something else.””

Claire became tense.

“What?””

He pointed to another entry.

A payment labeled:

“Deposit.””

My father looked at her.

“What deposit?””

Claire didn’t answer.

“Sophie.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“There’s money missing that doesn’t match any purchase.””

My chest tightened.

“How much?””

Daniel stared at the numbers.

“Seventeen thousand dollars.””

Marcus looked confused.

“But where did it go?””

Nobody knew.

Then Daniel noticed a note written beside the transaction.

A short sentence.

Three words.

“Safe deposit.””

My father looked up.

“Claire.””

She went completely still.

“Where is the key?””

Her face changed.

“I don’t know what you mean.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You wrote it.””

“I was stressed.””

“You wrote it six months ago.””

Claire backed away.

“No.””

My father’s voice became cold.

“Where is the key?””

I watched her look toward the hallway.

Just for a second.

But it was enough.

Daniel followed her eyes.

The hallway.

The cabinet near the office.

The place where he kept important documents.

He walked toward it.

Claire rushed after him.

“Daniel, don’t!””

He stopped.

That reaction told him everything.

He opened the cabinet.

Inside were folders.

Old paperwork.

Insurance documents.

And a small locked box.

My heart started racing.

Daniel picked it up.

“This?””

Claire said nothing.

Marcus whispered.

“Mom…”

My father tried the lock.

It didn’t open.

He looked at Claire.

“What’s the combination?””

She stared at the box.

Then at me.

And suddenly I understood.

Whatever was inside that box wasn’t just about money.

It was the reason Claire had risked everything.

Daniel reached for his phone.

“I’m calling the bank and a lawyer.””

Claire’s face turned white.

“No.””

He looked at her.

“No what?””

She stepped forward.

“Daniel, if you open that box…”

She stopped herself.

But it was too late.

Because her fear had already revealed the truth.

My father looked at the locked box.

Then at his wife.

May you like

And said the one thing none of us expected.

“Claire… what did you hide from us?””
