Chapter 2: The Missing Fifty Thousand

My father had always been the calmest person I knew.

Even when our family went through difficult times, Daniel never raised his voice.

But that night, I watched something inside him break.

He stood in the backyard holding my phone, staring at the empty college account.

Claire kept walking in circles.

“Daniel, you’re misunderstanding everything.””

He looked at her.

“No. I’m asking a simple question.””

His voice was quiet.

“Where is my daughter’s money?””

Claire shook her head.

“You’re making me look like a villain.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You spent my future on a car.””

She immediately pointed at me.

“Watch your attitude.””

Daniel stepped between us.

“Don’t talk to her like that.””

Claire froze.

I had never seen him defend me against her before.

Marcus stood near the car, looking uncomfortable.

“Mom, I didn’t know.””

Claire looked at him.

“Marcus, stay out of this.””

But Daniel heard him.

“You didn’t know?””

Marcus looked down.

“I thought Dad bought it.””

My father turned back to Claire.

“You told him that?””

Claire didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.

Daniel walked toward the house.

“Get me your phone.””

Claire followed.

“Daniel, please. Let me explain.””

“No.””

He kept walking.

“No more explanations. No more excuses.””

Inside the kitchen, he held out his hand.

“Your phone.””

Claire hesitated.

“Why?””

“Because I want to see the transactions.””

Her face changed.

Just for a second.

But my father noticed.

“Claire.””

She slowly handed it over.

Daniel opened the banking app.

Then the messages.

Then the purchase history.

The room became silent.

I stood behind him, afraid of what we would find.

Suddenly, Daniel stopped scrolling.

“What is this?””

Claire looked nervous.

“What?””

He turned the phone around.

“A $12,000 hotel payment?””

Claire’s lips parted.

“That was personal.””

“Personal?””

Daniel continued scrolling.

“A $7,500 designer purchase.””

“Daniel—”

“A $5,000 transfer.””

He looked at her.

“Who did you send this to?””

Claire grabbed for the phone.

My father moved it away.

“No.””

His voice was sharp.

“You don’t get to hide my daughter’s money.””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was going to put it back.””

I stared at her.

“When?””

She didn’t answer.

Daniel looked through more records.

Then he stopped.

His face changed again.

This time, it wasn’t anger.

It was disbelief.

“Sophie.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He slowly turned the screen toward me.

There was a transfer I didn’t recognize.

$25,000.

Sent three weeks earlier.

I felt numb.

“That wasn’t for the car.””

Daniel looked at Claire.

“No.””

Claire started crying.

“Daniel, listen—”

“No.””

He placed the phone on the counter.

“You spent $35,000 on the car.””

He pointed at the screen.

“And another $50,000 on other things.””

Claire wiped her face.

“My mother needed help.””

Daniel stared.

“Your mother?””

“Yes.””

“For what?””

Claire looked away.

“She wanted to travel.””

The room went completely silent.

I couldn’t believe it.

“My college money paid for your mother’s vacation?””

Claire’s voice became defensive.

“She’s family.””

I shook my head.

“So am I.””

Those words made my father look down.

Because he knew.

He knew I had spent years saving.

He knew I had skipped things other teenagers enjoyed.

And while I was working weekends, Claire was spending my future.

Marcus slowly walked away from the car.

“Mom…”

Claire snapped.

“Don’t start.””

But Marcus looked at me.

“Sophie, I’m sorry.””

I wanted to believe him.

But before I could answer, Daniel’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face immediately changed.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t respond.

He just answered.

“Hello?””

A few seconds passed.

Then my father looked directly at Claire.

“Say that again.””

His grip tightened around the phone.

“What do you mean there was another withdrawal?””

Claire stopped crying.

Daniel listened silently.

May you like

Then he whispered one sentence that made my blood run cold.

“The account wasn’t emptied because of the car.””
