Chapter 12: The File She Tried to Destroy

My father watched the security footage again.

Claire walking into his office.

Opening the cabinet.

Taking the folder.

Leaving.

Every movement looked planned.

Not desperate.

Not accidental.

Planned.

“What was inside?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

The lawyer looked at Daniel.

“The label says Sophie.””

My stomach dropped.

“Why would she take my file?””

Daniel looked furious.

“I don’t know.””

But I could tell he was afraid.

The lawyer immediately called the bank and requested a security review.

Meanwhile, Marcus tried calling his mother.

She didn’t answer.

Again.

And again.

Finally, he threw the phone onto the table.

“She’s ignoring me.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Did she ever tell you about these documents?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

He looked ashamed.

“I thought she just wanted me to have a better car.””

Nobody blamed him.

Because he was also realizing how far this had gone.

A few hours later, the lawyer received an update.

“We found where she went.””

Everyone looked up.

“Where?””

He hesitated.

“Her mother’s house.””

Rebecca Collins.

The person connected to the hidden account.

Daniel stood immediately.

“We’re going there.””

The lawyer shook his head.

“Don’t confront her alone.””

Daniel looked at him.

“She took my daughter’s documents.””

“I understand.””

“But we need to handle this carefully.””

I watched my father take a breath.

For years, he had been the person who solved every problem.

But this time, the problem was someone he loved.

When we arrived at Rebecca’s house, Claire’s car was parked outside.

My hands tightened.

The woman who had taken my future was inside.

The lawyer knocked.

Nobody answered.

Daniel knocked again.

“Claire.””

Silence.

Then we heard movement.

A few seconds later, the door opened.

Rebecca stood there.

She looked surprised.

“Daniel?””

He stared at her.

“Where is Claire?””

Rebecca hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

“Inside.””

We walked in.

Claire was standing near a table.

The folder was open in front of her.

My folder.

I felt anger rush through me.

“What are you doing?””

Claire looked at me.

“Sophie…”

“No.””

I stepped forward.

“You don’t get to say my name like you care.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I looked at the papers.

“By destroying my life?””

She shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

Daniel moved closer.

“Then explain.””

Claire looked at the folder.

Then at the documents.

Finally, she whispered:

“I found out something about Sophie.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

She looked at me.

Something about her expression scared me.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“There’s something in those records.””

Daniel frowned.

“What records?””

Claire touched the folder.

“The ones I took.””

The lawyer stepped forward.

“You stole those documents. Give them back.””

But Claire didn’t move.

Because she knew something.

Something she believed could change everything.

Daniel’s voice became firm.

“Claire.””

She looked at him.

“If you open this folder…”

She stopped.

Everyone waited.

Then she whispered:

“You’ll find out Sophie’s entire college fund was never supposed to be handled the way you thought.””

I felt confused.

“What does that mean?””

Claire looked at me.

And for the first time, she looked afraid for a reason that wasn’t herself.

She slowly opened the folder.

And pulled out a document I had never seen before.

A document with my name.

And a signature.

Not mine.

Not Claire’s.

My father’s face changed when he saw it.

May you like

Because he recognized the signature immediately.

And he knew exactly what it meant.
