Chapter 4: The Hidden Account
The words “second account” stayed in the room like a warning siren.
I looked at my father’s face and knew he had discovered something Claire never wanted us to see.
Daniel slowly turned the phone around.
“There’s another bank account connected to Sophie’s college fund.””
My heart dropped.
“What does that mean?””
My father sat beside me.
“It means someone moved money from your account into another account before spending it.””
Claire immediately shook her head.
“That’s not what happened.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Then explain what happened.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
For the first time since I had known her, Claire had no confident answer.
Marcus looked between his mother and my father.
“Mom?””
Claire ignored him.
“Daniel, you’re acting like I stole something.””
My father’s jaw tightened.
“Did you have permission to move Sophie’s money?””
Silence.
That was the answer.
I felt tears building again.
I had trusted my family.
I had believed my college savings were safe because my father told me they were.
But someone inside my own home had taken control of the one thing I had spent years building.
Daniel opened the bank notification again.
“The second account was created under your name.””
Claire looked away.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“Who owns this account?””
Claire didn’t respond.
My father looked at me.
“Sophie, did you ever sign anything?””
I shook my head.
“Never.””
Daniel stood.
“Then we need to find out exactly what happened.””
Claire suddenly stepped forward.
“You don’t need lawyers.””
My father turned.
“Why?””
“Because this is a family matter.””
I laughed quietly.
“A family matter?””
Everyone looked at me.
“The money for my education disappeared.””
I pointed toward the backyard.
“You bought him a car.””
Then I looked at Claire.
“You paid for other things.””
My voice cracked.
“And now there’s another account you don’t want us to see.””
Claire’s expression hardened.
“You’re being dramatic.””
Daniel immediately responded.
“Don’t call her dramatic.””
The kitchen went silent.
Claire stared at him.
“You’re defending her over me?””
Daniel looked hurt.
“I’m protecting my daughter.””
That sentence made Marcus lower his eyes.
Because even he knew the difference.
A few minutes later, Daniel called the bank.
I sat at the table listening as he answered questions.
“Yes.””
“No, my daughter did not authorize this.””
“Yes, I want every transaction.””
Then he paused.
His face changed.
“What do you mean the account was accessed from another device?””
I looked up.
Claire froze.
Daniel slowly turned toward her.
“Another device?””
Claire looked nervous.
“I don’t know.””
But her voice was different.
Less angry.
More afraid.
The bank representative continued talking.
Daniel listened.
Then he asked one question.
“When was the first transfer made?””
A long pause.
Then he looked at me.
“Six months ago.””
I felt my stomach drop.
Six months.
That was before the car.
Before the balloons.
Before the celebration.
Claire had been taking my money long before tonight.
Daniel ended the call.
“I need your laptop.””
Claire looked confused.
“My laptop?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because the bank said the transfers were approved through an online account.””
She took a step back.
“No.””
That single word changed everything.
Daniel stared at her.
“Why are you saying no?””
Claire swallowed.
“I just…”
She couldn’t finish.
Marcus stood.
“Mom, what’s going on?””
Claire looked at him.
“Go upstairs.””
“No.””
Marcus shook his head.
“I want to know.””
Daniel walked toward the hallway.
“Where is your laptop, Claire?””
She didn’t move.
And then Marcus noticed something sitting beside her purse.
A small black notebook.
He picked it up.
“Mom?””
Claire immediately reached for it.
“Give me that.””
But Marcus opened it first.
His face changed.
“What is this?””
Nobody answered.
He slowly flipped through the pages.
Then he looked at me.
“Sophie…”
I stood up.
“What?””
Marcus looked terrified.
“She wrote down every payment.””
Daniel grabbed the notebook.
And the first page contained a list of amounts.
The car.
The hotel.
The shopping.
The transfers.
Then Daniel reached the final line.
A payment much larger than the others.
His hands began shaking.
May you like
Because underneath the amount was a name.
A name none of us expected.
