Chapter 7: The Video Shawn Left Behind
The warehouse was silent except for the sound of the projector.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Jillian stared at the screen as Shawn Bannon’s face appeared in the darkness.
Her mind rejected what her eyes were seeing.
Shawn had been dead for twelve days.
She had attended his funeral.
She had watched Patrick stand beside a grave.
She had watched Malcolm accept condolences from people who whispered about legacy and loss.
But there he was.
Alive.
Afraid.
Looking directly at them.
“If you’re watching this,” Shawn said on the recording, “then Malcolm knows about Cody.””
Jillian grabbed Cody’s hand.
The boy stared at the screen, frozen.
“Is that my dad?””
Patrick looked away.
That hurt more than anything.
Cody noticed.
“Patrick?””
His voice was quiet.
Patrick closed his eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
The video continued.
Shawn sat at a desk Jillian recognized from old family photos. Behind him was his home office.
But something was different.
He looked older.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like someone who had been carrying a weight too heavy for too long.
“Cody,” Shawn said, “if you are watching this, I need you to understand something.””
Cody stepped closer.
“You were never the problem.””
Jillian felt tears forming.
Shawn continued.
“You were the reason I had to find the truth.””
The screen flickered.
Then another document appeared.
A financial record.
Names.
Companies.
Transfers.
Jillian did not understand everything.
But she understood one thing.
Millions of dollars.
Moved secretly.
“Malcolm created a system,” Shawn said.
“A system built on fear. Everyone inside this family benefited from staying quiet.””
Patrick looked sick.
Emmett watched him carefully.
“Your father knew,” Emmett said.
Patrick did not answer.
The video continued.
“Malcolm will tell you that family protects family.””
Shawn laughed sadly.
“But he means something different.””
The screen showed another image.
A younger Malcolm Bannon.
Standing beside a much younger Patrick.
“Family is not protection when fear is the only thing holding it together.””
The video paused.
Then Shawn looked directly into the camera.
“Jillian.””
Her heart stopped.
Everyone looked at her.
“If you are there, it means you did what I hoped you would do.””
She whispered:
“What?””
Shawn continued.
“You protected Cody.””
Jillian covered her mouth.
“He knew.””
Emmett nodded slowly.
“Shawn trusted you.””
“But why?””
The video answered.
“Because you were the only person in this family who never asked Cody what he could do for the Bannons.””
Jillian felt a tear fall.
She remembered all the small moments.
Homework.
Hospital visits.
Late-night conversations.
The times Cody needed someone.
Not a Bannon.
Not an heir.
Just someone.
Shawn looked back at the camera.
“There is one thing you need to know.””
The room became still.
“Cody is not valuable because of what he inherited.””
A pause.
“He is valuable because of what he knows.””
Jillian turned toward Cody.
“What do you know?””
Cody looked confused.
“Nothing.””
But then his face changed.
A memory.
A small moment.
“I…”
Everyone waited.
Cody slowly reached into his backpack.
“I thought it was just a drawing.””
He pulled out an index card.
A sketch of a building.
Emmett stepped closer.
“Where did you get that?””
“From Dad’s old office.””
Patrick looked at him.
“You had that?””
Cody nodded.
“I found a box after the funeral.””
Jillian looked at the card.
“What is it?””
Cody turned it over.
“I don’t know.””
Emmett took the card.
His expression changed instantly.
“This isn’t a drawing.””
“What is it?””
“A map.””
The warehouse suddenly felt smaller.
Patrick looked terrified.
“Cody, where exactly did you find this?””
“Behind a painting.””
Nobody spoke.
Then the warehouse doors slammed open.
Men entered.
Armed.
Jillian pulled Cody behind her.
Emmett stepped forward.
But the person walking behind the men made everyone stop.
Malcolm Bannon.
He looked calm.
Almost disappointed.
“Patrick.””
His voice carried through the warehouse.
“You always were the weak one.””
Patrick stepped forward.
“Let them go.””
Malcolm smiled.
“Still pretending you have choices?””
Jillian stared at him.
“You threatened your own grandson.””
Malcolm looked at Cody.
“No.””
He corrected her.
“I protected the family.””
Cody’s face hardened.
“I’m not part of your family.””
The words surprised everyone.
Even Malcolm.
Then Malcolm smiled.
Because he knew something they didn’t.
“You will be.””
He looked at the map in Emmett’s hand.
“Because your father hid something that belongs to me.””
Emmett folded the card.
“No.””
Malcolm’s eyes narrowed.
“You don’t understand.””
He stepped closer.
“That boy is carrying the only thing that can destroy everything I built.””
And then he said the words that made Jillian’s blood turn cold.
“Cody doesn’t know what he found.””
May you like
A pause.
“But he knows where it is.””
