Chapter 12: The Room Behind the Painting

Laura Bannon’s old studio had been abandoned for years.

That was what everyone believed.

But when Jillian entered the building, she immediately knew someone had been there recently.

The dust on the floor was disturbed.

The locks were new.

Someone had searched the place.

Shawn stood beside her.

He looked around like he was seeing a grave.

“She loved this room.””

Jillian glanced at him.

“You knew her well?””

“Yes.””

That surprised her.

“Why?””

Shawn looked at the old paintings covering the walls.

“Because Laura was the smartest person in the room.””

Cody walked slowly behind them.

He looked uncomfortable.

“This is strange.””

Jillian turned.

“What?””

“I feel like I’ve been here before.””

Shawn looked at him.

“You have.””

Cody frowned.

“I was little.””

“Yes.””

A memory appeared on his face.

“The blue door.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What blue door?””

Cody pointed toward the back wall.

“There was a blue door behind the shelves.””

Shawn immediately moved.

They pushed aside old boxes.

Behind them was a painted wooden door.

Blue.

Exactly as Cody remembered.

Jillian stared.

“You remembered this?””

Cody nodded.

“I thought it was a dream.””

Shawn opened it.

Inside was a small hidden room.

No furniture.

No decorations.

Only one table.

And a locked metal box.

Shawn approached it slowly.

“My father.””

Patrick looked at him.

“What?””

“Malcolm never knew about this.””

Emmett stepped closer.

“Then what is inside?””

Shawn looked at Cody.

“Your mother’s truth.””

Cody touched the box.

There was a small symbol engraved on the top.

The same symbol from his drawings.

Jillian watched as he traced it.

Then the lock clicked.

Everyone froze.

“You opened it?””

Cody looked confused.

“I didn’t.””

But inside the box was a stack of letters.

Photographs.

And one final envelope.

With Jillian’s name.

Her hands shook.

“Mine?””

Shawn looked surprised.

“I don’t know.””

She opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Written by Laura.

If Jillian is reading this, then Cody chose the right person.

Jillian covered her mouth.

The letter continued.

I never met you, but I know the kind of person you are.

Tears filled her eyes.

“How?””

Shawn whispered:

“Laura watched people carefully.””

Jillian kept reading.

Malcolm believes blood creates loyalty.

He is wrong.

Love does.

She looked at Cody.

The letter continued.

Protect my son. Not because he carries the Bannon name.

Protect him because he carries the truth.

Then one final sentence.

The sentence that changed everything.

The man who killed Shawn Bannon is not Malcolm.

Everyone froze.

Patrick looked up.

“What?””

Jillian slowly turned the page.

The next words were written beneath.

Malcolm ordered it.

But someone else carried it out.

A sound came from outside.

A car door slammed.

Then another.

Emmett moved toward the window.

His face changed.

“We’re not alone.””

Shawn grabbed the letters.

“How many?””

Emmett looked outside.

“Too many.””

Jillian held Cody’s hand.

“Who is here?””

Emmett turned back.

And said the name nobody expected.

“Patrick’s mother.””

Patrick went pale.

“My mother died five years ago.””

Shawn looked toward the door.

“No.””

A woman’s voice echoed through the studio.

“Hello, Shawn.””

Everyone turned.

An older woman stepped inside.

Elegant.

Calm.

Familiar.

Patrick whispered:

“No…”

The woman smiled.

“Did you really think Malcolm was the only monster in this family?””

Jillian stared.

Because she understood.

The Bannon secret was not buried with Shawn.

May you like

It was buried deeper.

With the woman who had raised them all.
